English Only Update

The proponents of State Question 689 have asked the Supreme Court to let them withdraw their petition. They note that they may introduce it later, but for now all is well!

State Question 689

An English Only measure is on its way to the Oklahoma ballot. Supporters have submitted over 100,000 signatures to the Secretary of State in support of State Question 689, which makes English the Offcial language of Oklahoma, and outlaws the spending of state money on documents, transactions, proceedings, meetings, or publications in any language other than English, by the state or any of its political subdivisions. An exception is made for the teaching of "foreign" languages in publicly funded schools and universities. All moneys previously budgeted for the proscribed non-English languages activities (how could that be?) are allowed (but not required) to be diverted to English as a Second Language classes.
