The most frequent question from tourists is, "Where is avenue of poplars?" It is not too much to say that the avenue of poplars is the most famous and beloved sightseeing spot in Hokkaido University. In spite of the popularity, it is hard to find the avenue, and moreover until last year there used to be a similar avenue, called the fake avenue of poplars. But this issue has not been resolved yet because there are also two avenues of poplars in Hokkaido University, one was planted in 1903 which is the original, the other was planted in 2000 and is called the Heisei avenue of poplars. That said, the latter is far from the main area of the university and still very young. So, it seems likely that no one would mistake it for the original.
