| To tell the truth, I was a bit surprised
to learn of the existence of
the society
for barefoot living because I
have never
even thought of whether barefoot
living is
good or not in my life. In this
civilized
society, I would rather support
life with
shoes for several reasons. At
first, it is
dangerous to go outside barefoot.
There are
a lot of harmful things on the
road whether
it is easy to find or not, and
barefoot living
means to plunge into such a dangerous
situation
by oneself. This is obviously
bad for the
health.
Moreover, if everyone walked barefoot around
cities, in spite of the great
amount of harmful
trash on the street, it would
become necessary
to clean up all the streets in
cities and
that would take a lot of money.
This may
supply a lot of work and improve
the recent
bad labor situation, but shoes
industry will
suffer serious damage. It doesn’t
seem to
be a very good idea to consider
the economic
aspects.
Finally, it is unnatural to force people
to live barefoot. Today, most
people all
over the world are accustomed
to life with
shoes irrespective of their own
culture,
and this fact implies that almost
everyone
feels more comfortable to life
with shoes
rather than barefoot.
As I noted here, I took a position against
barefoot living, but I was very
interested
in its idea. I was stimulated
very much by
the particular point of view
and many-sided
justification in the homepage
of the Society
for Barefoot Living.
