Today, I met a young professor
who is just back from Paris. He studied economics for seven
years there. His name is Tetsu gTerryh Inokashira. He
grew up in Kichijo-ji, Tokyo. He came to Sapporo three years
ago and got married recently. Now, he is living with his
wife. He has taught economics at Hokudai for three years but
this year is the first time he will teach non-professional
students, such as in a Freshman Seminar. I hope his lecture
will go well in the general education class.
He is not only an academic but
also an active person. Usually, he rides his bicycle from
home to the office. But he doesnft take a long trip such
as Otaru bound, as some Hokudai students say. I sincerely
hope he wonft do such a stupid action.

Miwa
Takeuchi

|
There
is a nice young lady in this class called Miwa Takeuchi. She
has lived in Sapporo for three years but originally comes
from, Yokkaichi in Mie. Before she came to Hokkaido, she
thought that Hokkaido was very big and green, but now her
impression of Hokkaido has changed on seeing Sapporo. It was
a bigger city than she had expected. However, there was much
nature in the Hokkaido University campus, so she often
enjoys walking around there. Also, she loves music.
She was in a music band and practiced the horn for
six years. In the future she hopes to work for an
international company. Now she is active, being engaged in
some international problems with friends. Maybe she will
realize her dream. Miwa seems an attractive and honest
person. If you talk with her, you will feel happy!!

Mirian
Hiraiwa

|
This
is a nice girl called Mirian Hiraiwa. Although her name is
like a Japanese name, her parents emigrated to Paraguay many
years ago. She was born and grew up there, a country in
South America. She can speak four languages-English,
Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese- and she is also interested
in language. She came to Sapporo two years ago and studies
Environment Engineering in the 2nd grade now. It seems so
hard to study. Now, she has come to Sapporo alone, and lives
in the international Dormitory in Toyohira Area with people
who come from different countries. Mirian has one older
brother and one younger sister, and she is the middle one.
How does she spend her free time? She goes jogging and does
some exercise in the gym near the Sapporo Station. It sounds
very nice.

Yoshihiro
Hosono

|
I met a brilliant guy
whose name is Yoshihiro Hosono in Hokkaido University. He is
a sophomore in the faculty of agriculture. He is studying
agricultural economics. His hometown is in Shiga Prefecture,
which is next to Kyoto Prefecture. There is a famous lake
called gLake Biwah there.
The main reason why he came to Hokkaido is that he
likes Hokkaido especially. He went skiing Hokkaido this
winter. Moreover he likes running, reading, and traveling.
He has run 21 kilometers twice in Shiga Prefecture. Now he
is looking for a person who can run with him. If you like
jogging, please contact him. Yoshihiro seems like an
ambitious guy. Needless to say, he will be able to get a
successful life!!

| Yuki Miura

He
is Yuki Miura. He said he is from Hiroshima, but he wasnft
born there. He was born in Fukuoka, and moved to Hiroshima
when he was 3 years-old, so I guess it is better to say it
is his hometown. His mother and young sister live in
Hiroshima with pets, but his father lives in Yamaguchi by
himself, because he has a job there. Yuki lives near
our university, and enjoys his life. In his free time he
likes reading books, going to movies, and playing sports.
Actually, his major is the same as mine, and he is my
juniorfs friend!!

Motoshi
Tomita

|
Motoshi Tomita is a
brilliant young forestry student. gMoto-shih means a
gfundamental manh. His father loves the Chinese
character, gshih (man), and gave this character to both
of his two sonsf names.
Motoshi came from Niigata last year to study agricultural
science. He is now a sophomore at the Department of Forestry
in the Faculty of Agriculture. He is living in a flat next
to the campus and enjoys the freedom of being single except
for the cooking and cleaning.
At home, he has an old white dog and two cats. One cat is
brown and white and the other is gray. Picking them up in
the street, he loves these dogs and cats though he doesnft
know what kind of mixture they are.
(Perhaps because he has just entered the Department of
Forestry), he is passionate enough to read books on ecology
and forestry even in his free time. Thanks to some
linguistic training in the States, he is exceptionally good
at oral English. I am quite sure that he will start to read
specialized books in
English as a hobby!

near future! Good luck Pei Ju!

NAGAMINE
Mayuko

|
My
partner is Mrs. NAGAMINE Mayuko. Her name was given to her
by her father, but she doesnft know what it means.
She was born in Shizuoka prefecture, and when she was ten
years old, she and her family moved to Suzuka city, in Mie
prefecture. Suzuka is famous for the gSuzuka Circuith.
On the last weekend in July every year, there is a famous
motorcycle race held there, known as the gSuzuka 24 hour
raceh
She is now studying law in the 4th grade
at this university, mainly focusing on civil law. She is now
thinking about her job. She wants to find a job at a law
firm. Is she trying to pass the bar exam? She says she
doesnft know yet. I hope she can find a good job.
Mayuko is not so interested in any
sports, but her hobby is playing and listening to music. She
plays the flute in the Hokudai orchestra. What a nice hobby
it is! Naturally, her favorite music is classic music.

Chizuko
Kushima

|
I
would like to introduce an active woman whose name is
Chizuko Kushima. Now, she belongs to the school of
International Media and Communication. But until last year,
she had been working in Tokyo. She lived there for more than
ten years. Her job in Tokyo was the editor of English
textbooks. So you can ask about anything about textbooks.
Her hometown is Sapporo. As for living in Tokyo, she said it
was exciting since she could get lots of chances to access
interesting information. Itfs amazing, but shefs still
working!! So shefs very busy now studying in the graduate
school and working at her job. When she has free time, she
reads various genres of books and listens to music. In
addition to her activeness, I was impressed by her positive
thinking.

Oroszlany
Balazs Ferenc

|
Hunky Oroszlany Balazs
Ferenc hails from the beautiful city of Budapest and grew up
listening to Bartok`s elegant works. Stunningly good-
looking, he is completing his studies in vet science, but
could easily be mistaken as a movie- star doing a shoot at
Hokkaido University. He practices Naginata, an ancient
Japanese martial arts twice a week. After three years in
Japan, he has become an expert user of the Ofuro (Japanese
Bathtub), but still shuns the idea of getting bare-footed,
especially in winter. Conversing fluently in Hungarian,
English and Japanese, Balazs, an avid animal- lover, aspires
to work for a Japanese company when he returns to Europe. |

22 in May) and he has been living in Sapporo from his birth.
He is learning InfoTech in the Faculty of Engineering. Now
he is too busy at programming (like C, JAVA, etc.) and
studying mathematics related to computing. In his junior
high school days, he was a member of the basketball club and
he was the capitain. Hefll go to Wisconsin from this
August and study one year there as an exchange student.
Ifm surprised to find out about his eagerness for studying
English. He took the TOEFL test seven times!

| Wen Chi-yuan |
This smart girl is
Wen Chi-yuan. She is from Taipei, Taiwan. She has been
living in Sapporo from this April. I hope she will not be
surprised at the heavy snow and coldness winter here (It is
very different from Taipei!). She is a research student in
the Graduate School of Media and Communication studying
Public Relations (P.R.). Why is her major P.R.? That's
because, she said, Japan is one of the leading countries in
I.T., which has a lot of risks. She thinks IT changes our
lives for the better, but on the other hand makes them
dangerous to sustain if we donft know how to use IT. She
is interested in how to manage these risks, which made her
think about public society. That motivated her to study P.R.
at Hokudai. Certainly, It is a big problem in the system
integration (for example, the integration of banking
systems). I hope she will become a masters student to solve
such complicated, but important issues.
