Canadian National ChampionshipsThe
next race was the first of the Formula SST qualifiers. A total of 11 boats
were on hand for this class, with 8 OMC and 3 Mercury powered boats. From
the start of the first heat, it was obvious that the boats to beat were
the #83 of Blair Kants and the #60 of Greg Mistelbacher. Alain LaRose was
also very fast in his #12 Mercury powered boat. The qualifying heats on
Saturday ran well, without incident. Sunday was a different story. In the
final qualifying heat on Sunday, Alain LaRose was running fast, near the
front. He was coming down the straight when the wind caught under his
boat, making him get too high. He almost got it under control, several
times, while doing a wild dance down the straight. Unfortunately, his
right picklefork caught the water, causing the boat to roll and land
upside down. Alain was wet, but otherwise he was fine. His boat, on the
other hand, is going to need a new right picklefork before he races again.
The SST final began with Greg Mistelbacher on the pole, Blair Kants in second, and Blake Roque in third off of the starting dock. When the flag dropped, Blair Kants moved into the lead, with Mistelbacher in close pursuit. As soon as the race started, it had to be stopped, due to a barrel roll by Cameron Morley as he was exiting a turn. He landed right side up, and once his boat was towed off of the course, the race was restarted. The rest of the final ran without event, but with some great racing throughout the field. At the end, Blair Kants crossed the line first, with Greg Mistelbacher in second. Dean Bowes finished third, especially rewarding considering his disastrous results here a year ago! The
North Shore Ramp area of the park was the jumping off point for a record
turn out of contenders – eighteen S2 teams and twenty S1 boats.
Qualifying on Saturday came with surprises for the S2 class. Sam LaBanco with the best time was ninth on the dock after penalties were accessed. Canadians, Blair Kants, Paul Hickey, Blake Roque and Dean Bowes had made the cut for the first flag of the split-field final, along with Scott Landgraf, Mark Proffitt, and Carole Reno; Neal Haraway held the pole. When Ruben Deihl and George Galloway scratched from the final, LaBanco got his first big break -- the split would now allow him to run under the first flight. It was only after the boats came through the third and fourth turns that the announcer could call the leader, LaBanco with Haraway, Landgraf, Reno and Proffitt on his heels. For the remaining nineteen laps, LaBanco would tour the racecourse in first. “I can’t believe it (the engine) started. During qualifying, the motor would not come off the dock. I was more than a little worried.” Commented LaBanco. “Haraway is fast and consistent. Any little blip on my part and he would be here in first place, not me.” In the end, only five boats of the original sixteen starters would be on the lead lap; Haraway nailing down second, Proffitt in third, Kants fourth and Landgraf fifth. However, it was the smile that could burn out the sun on Proffitt’s face as he accepted the third place trophy that measured the success of the race. Story By APR Superleague www.aprsuperleague.com |
Marietta, OHThe SST 60 final began with 15 boats lined up at the dock. Unfortunately, both Sam LeBanco and Mark Proffitt were both absent due to damage from incidents that occurred in qualifying. As the flag dropped, polesitter Neal Haraway jumped into the lead, with Brian Rogerson (#236) (photo above) and Blair Kants (#83) in close pursuit. After a few laps, Brian Rogerson finally found a way around Neal Haraway, and sprinted into the lead. Blair Kants was in close pursuit of the two leaders and looked like he would get a top 3 finish until an unfortunate incident causing him to run over a corner marker put him out of the race. Brian Rogerson maintained his lead to grab the victory, with Neal haraway in second and Carole Reno (#165) following in third. (Coverage from: www.powerboat.about.com ) Peoria,

Qualifying
rounds were delayed for the S2 class until Sunday due to the capricious
nature of the wind. However,
by show time, the grid had been set, with Canadian Champion, Blair Kants
(#83, Bridal Suite Bermuda) on the pole, followed by Sam LaBanco (#440,
Airmarine), Carole Reno (#165, Everglades Seasonings) and Mark Proffitt
(#22, Hustler Trailers). At
the start, LaBanco with a blistering drive to the turn grabbed the lead
while the remainder of the field followed in his wake.
Flawless racing kept everyone at bay and after 20 laps; LaBanco
took the checkered and earned his first victory lap of the season.
Joining him for the celebration were Neal Haraway (#5 Hooter’s)
moving from a ninth place on the start to finish second and Reno in third. Story By APR Superleague Coming Soon: Race Reports Kankakee, IL US Nationals |
