New Year's traditions vary from culture to culture and even family to family.

Some families in America do no ironing, straightening their hair or cleaning on New Year's Day. People get all that done before midnight (on New Year's Eve). Some people ring in the new year at parties. Others go to church though they usually return home in time for a champagne toast.

Other popular American New Year's traditions are the dropping of the New Year ball at Times Square in New York and the Rose Bowl and Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, Calif. But different countries have other traditions, and other traditional foods.

In Scotland, they have "first-footing" just after midnight of New Year's Eve. Neighbors visit each other bringing gifts of coal for fire or shortbread, and it's considered very good luck for a tall, dark, handsome man to be the first visitor of the year.

In Japan, New Year, or "oshogatsu," is the biggest celebration of the year. Japanese people "forget the year" at "bonenkai" parties and children receive cash presents called "otoshidama." Buddhist monks ring the temple bell 108 times to expel 108 human weaknesses and everybody cleans and scrubs their house. As for food, many people eat noodles at their local Buddhist temple at midnight and "omochi," a sticky rice cake, during New Year's Day.

In Spain the tradition is to eat twelve grapes at the stroke of midnight to signify the last 12 months of the year.

New Year's Day is also the Festival of St. Basil in Greece, and they eat "vassilopitta," a cake with a silver or gold coin baked into it for luck.

The Dutch burn bonfires of Christmas trees and shoot fireworks, the latter being a common tradition in America as well. That tradition is believed to come from ancient times when the noise of the fireworks was believed to chase away evil spirits.

    *Questions*

    Where is Times Square?

    What city has a parade?

In what country is it considered good luck for a tall, dark, handsome man to be the first visitor of the year?

    What does otoshidama mean?

Why do buddhist monks ring the temple bell 108 times?

Why do people in Spain eat twelve grapes at the stroke of midnight?

In what country do people eat "vassilopitta," a cake with a silver or gold coin baked into it for luck?

Why do the Dutch shoot fireworks?

White Christmas Irving Berlin 1942 I'm dreaming of a white Christmas Just like the ones I used to know Where the treetops glisten and children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow. I'm dreaming of a white Christmas With every Christmas card I write May your days be merry and bright And may all your Christmases be white. Jingle Bell Rock Bobby Helms Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring Snowing and blowing up bushels of fun Now the jingle hop has begun Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time Dancing and prancing in Jingle Bell Square In the frosty air. What a bright time, it's the right time To rock the night away Jingle bell time is a swell time To go gliding in a one-horse sleigh Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet Jingle around the clock Mix and a-mingle in the jingling feet That's the jingle bell, That's the jingle bell, That's the jingle bell rock.

    New Year!

In China people eat eight, ten or twelve dishes of food at New Year. This is because an even number means double the luck. A lot of the food at New Year has a special meaning. Seaweed means good luck and long noodles mean long life. They eat whole vegetables and don?t use knives to cut things, because this means the end of your good luck. In Russia there is lots of food on the table so the next year will be happy and plentiful. At 11.59 people open champagne and wait for the clock to strike twelve. Then they make a toast for the New Year. They wish everybody good luck and happiness. In Spain people eat twelve grapes ?Eone with each chime of the clock at midnight. This brings good luck for the next twelve months. But it is difficult to eat twelve grapes in twelve seconds, so people usually have a mouth full of grapes at the end!

    Weddings

Italians eat doughnuts in the shape of bowties for good luck. They also eat sugared almonds when they hope for a baby. Many years ago in Britain the father of the bride gave the groom ?honey mead?E(a honey drink) for a whole month. In this way the couple had a month of sweetness and happiness. We have now changed the word to ?honeymoon?E?Ethe holiday a couple goes on after their wedding.

    Birthdays

When a child is born in China, the father gives red eggs to his friends and family ?Ean even number for a girl and an odd number for a boy. The birthday party started in Europe in the Middle Ages. People were afraid of ghosts and bad spirits on their birthdays. Friends and family came to visit you with presents to stop them.
