The street names and their sources

This list was written by Black Cat and Gunsmith. Visit their homepage for a good discussion board. I hope they don't get mad for me reprinting this list!

Most of the street names in Silent Hill are names of famous authors.

The Authors

Finney - Jack Finney, author of "Time and Again"
Bachman - Richard Bachman, Stephen King's pseudonym, who wrote "The Regulators"
Bloch - Robert Bloch, author of "Psycho"
Matheson - Richard Matheson, author of "I am Legend"
Ellroy - Jack Ellroy, author of the "Black Dahlia"
Bradbury - Ray Bradbury, author of "Something Wicked This Way Comes"
Levin - Ira Levin, author of "Rosemary's Baby"
Sanford - John Sanford, author of the "Prey' books
Simmons - Dan Simmons, author of "Song of Kali"
Sagan - Carl Sagan, author of "Contact"
Crichton - Michael Crichton, author of "Sphere"
Koontz - Dean Koontz, author of "Phantoms"
Midwich - name of the town in "The Midwich Cuckoos" by John Wyndham (basis for film "Village of the Damned")
Wilson - F. Paul Wilson, author of "Nightworld"

Also, someone on that discussion board (I couldn't find the message again, so I can't credit it) pointed out that the books by many of these authors have similar plot elements to the game, like:

1. In "Sphere" by Crichton, the characters in the story "manifest" their thoughts into physical forms much like Alessa.
2. In "The Regulators" by Richard Bachman, the little boy in the story creates deadly creatures with the power of his mind - again like Alessa.
3. (These next three I discovered myself) In "Phantoms" by Dean Koontz, the characters find themselves alone in a suddenly empty town. In a hotel they discover the words "Timothy Flyte - The Ancient Enemy" written on a mirror in a bathroom, which later turns out to the name of a book and it's author. Similarly, in Silent Hill, Harry discovers the words "Leonard Rhimes - The Monster Lurks" in the nightmare school (also in a bathroom) which turns out to be the name of a book and author.
4. On Bloch Street, somewhere across from the Church, the word "Redrum" is written on the wall in blood. The Shining, anyone?
5. In Rosemary's Baby, a group of people dabble in the occult and bring about the birth of a demonic child.
6. In the amusement park, the imagery of the carousels is very much like Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes."
7. Plus all the fog and mist, etc., is very similar to Stephen King's novella "The Mist"

Another thing someone pointed out in the guide by Black Cat and Gunsmith is that the teachers on the list in the school are names of members in the band "Sonic Youth" - Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, and Leonard Renaldo.

Anyone who's seen the Evil Dead trilogy will instantly recognize Harry's chainsaw and shotgun (ol' double barrel). In fact there's a resemblance between Harry and Bruce Campbell (Ash). I'm surprised Harry never utters a "Groovy!" or "Come get some!" heh, heh.

Another movie that might give you Silent Hill flashbacks is "Jacob's Ladder". Skinless monsters, shifting realities, and one scene in particular: a wheelchair ride through a hellish hospital mental ward, all lead one to conclude that this movie acted a s yet another influence for those wacky creators of Silent Hill. Without giving too much away, the ending follows one of Silent Hill's endings to the very letter. Check it out and see for youreself.

I stumbled across this on an occult site:

Samael - (Unk) it is thought this angel of death was the demon who tempted Eve. Also the prince of air. This is merely another name for satan.
Here's the site I found it at: The Demon Dictionary

Rumors

The rumors concerning things hidden in Silent Hill are numerous if nothing else, some sound plausible; others are ridiculous. Remember that in all probability, none of these are true, but they make a fun read. I'll go in order from Possible to Ludicrous. ( Also, I can't really credit these to anyone - it's anyone's guess where they started.) So, without further ado:

SAVING LISA

Some have claimed that it is indeed possible to save Lisa from her agonizing fate, but no proven method exists. The most likely possibility is to find a way to enter the hospital parking lot - it's blocked by a barrier - and supposedly the FMV sequence you see in the game's opening sequence (where Lisa and Kaufmann argue) is revealed.

SIXTH ENDING

This one remains rather shrouded. I've heard that if you meet these certain criteria you will receive a different secret ending other than the UFO.
1. Use only handweapons and no guns through the entire game.
2. Have under 13 or so saves, and probably no continues.
3. Beat it under a certain time, 2:30 I think.
4. Use only health drinks and no first-aid kits.

THE AMBULANCE AND THE BOAT

This is a truly far-fetched rumor, it's hardly even worth posting. Some nutcase has said that he got the glucose and distilled water from the school Chemistry storeroom. These are among the ingredients needed to make a bomb. He claims he blew open the barrier to the hospital and found oil, which he used in the engine in the car garage where the gasoline is. He took the engine (Harry must be stronger thank he lets on) and put it in an ambulance, and took the ambulance around the town. If nothing else this person is imaginative. But don't believe it; I know enough about 3-d game engines to know that that just wouldn't work. Also, some people got suspicious at the boat, because if you check the steering wheel Harry says something like "No need to worry about this now," but worry about it later, some thought? Again, the 3d engine thing - it's a 3rd person game where you move a person around, not a car or a boat racing game. Well, it's funny in its absurdity at least.

My comments are in bold.

This was sent in by Chris Wilson.
If you get the GOOD+ ending, and use the same memory card, the FMV intro will change. Instead of Harry's wife holding Cheryl, it will now be Cybil.

This you may not have noticed: Cheryl's sketchbook says "Drawing Block." However, with the changed FMV it says something different. After recording it, pausing the tape, and clearing the image he got this. . . "Codwigr Diner."

Is this a joke? Or is it urging you to go to this place?

Thanks, Chris for that interesting piece of info.

Amanda writes in:
If you stand next to a newspaper vending machine, you can see that the headline on the paper reads: "Bill skins a fifth"

A "Silence of the Lambs" reference?

A message from DarkMage states that on the wall of the theatre (?) across from the antique shop is a poster for the movie "Carrie".

Yet another mention of a Stephen King work, it seems...

Darkmage generously contributes more:
Alessa was creating all the monsters 'n stuff around town. If you look closely at the things in her room in nowhere and other places you can see things from the nightmare worlds. Like these-
1. The dolls in her room resemble the child demons with the knives.
2.The drawings on the ground, one one of them is of a winged demon (samael).
3.The cards on the floor are like the ones that were scattered around the room in the school.
4. The sign for the antique shop had a green lion on it, which looked a lot like those green things in the sewers.
5. The grafitti room in nowhere has some words you can read like these "kill", "mom kill" (could be about what Dahlia did to Alessa), "die", and on the door as you leave "help me" is printed on it. And the drawing on the far wall is in the shape of the final boss, Samael.
6.In the mall, before you fight the grub, the TV screen shows the fmv of Cheryl. After the fmv is over pictures appear on the screen that look like tunnels. Those are the same symbols that appear above the doors in the beginning of the nowhere level.

To add further to that last one, according to Ctalk, the symbols are siguls of different angels. Their names are on the doors of nowhere. Och, Phaleg, Bethor, Aratron, Ophiel, I would say see dark illumination for more info. I'll get more on that.

Tres bien, merci Darkmage.

More from Darkmage!
1. In the nightmare worlds the streets were turned into metal grating. Like in the basement where Alessa was kept.
2. In the grafitti room in nowhere there are several spots that have 3 upside-down 9's, turn them over and what do you have? 666, the sign of the devil.
3.All the people in Silent Hill disappeared for some reason. A similar case has really happened before in American history. In the early 1500's an island called Roanoke was colonized by a few hundred people. They lived there until one winter when everyone disappeared. To this day no one knows what happened to them. One possible clue was found, a word carved on the side of a tree, "Croatoan". This is mentioned in Stephen King's "Storm of the Century". (Note: This also mentioned in Dean Koontz's novel "Phantoms").
5. Across from the hospital there are two small buildings(check the map) one is a restaurant. It is easy to find because it has many chairs and tables outside. Its name is Konami Burger, and the name of the group that made the game is KONAMI!

XD notices:
While running around the school and using Self View, if you look at the notices on the walls, I think it says "Notice: Hell is Coming". This is just a guess on my part, you can easily make out Hell on them, but the "is coming" part is kinda faded and hard to see.

Pretty creepy, eh?

More from XD:
Right across the street from the alley where Cheryl disappears at the beginning of the game, if you look at the wall (the building to the west of the huge "Crabs" sign) you can see a poster for Stephen King's "Pet Sematery". Now all that needs to be found is The Shining and The Stand. ;) Ya think King knows about all these refrences?
Also, in the cafe I noticed a poster that's kinda different... On both sides of the pinball machine, there are posters that show some bearded guy with the words, "Study Dammit!" on it. What's up w/ Konami? Is it just me or does Silent Hill seem like an experiment about a bunch of game producers on crack?

Heh, heh...could be.

XD with more stuff:
Normal School:
There are a lot of posters everywhere here, and a lot of them have weird and somewhat disturbing things on them. The four rooms (on both floors) on the east side of the building are exactly the same, so the following applies to them. On the lockers there are a bunch of small little posters with the words "Who are you?", "You?", and "who". On three lockers there are the letters C U T, each on a different Locker. Also, above some lockers there is a crucifix, which seems kinda odd for a school...another poster has a picture with a demon on it (looks like a little kid drawing), and some weird letters around the side of it like:
M
E
r
Y
O
U
u
Next to this poster is another poster with a couple of hippies. Not to mention there are a few posters spread around the school rooms that look like some naked people holding each other kissing...and we're not done w/ the school yet...in the lab equipment room, next to the door there looks like a side-view of an alien, plus there are a few dismembered people (more like mutilated) on posters. One last thing for the school. In the Library Reserve there is a poster for the movie "A _____ Came Down From Planet Vulcan" (can't make the 2nd word out).

Aound town:
On and around the Gas Station (east of the church) is a poster that reads:
"Super Tuesday 6 Cans of Formula Hell" Also there are some Portishead posters. My friends told me that Portishead is a rockband. 'Spose ya don't know anything about them, do ya? Also there are some posters that say "Hype" with a face that looks constipated... any ideas on this one? Kinda starting to think that everything in this game has some kind of vague refrence to something else...

For those who don't like the hospital, now it won't be so bad... Now you can see some nudity!!! =D There are some posters up around the normal hospital w/ itsy-bitsy pixelated posters w/ a women on them prolly giving herself a mamogram. ;)

As for the Green Lion Antique Shop, in the "Other Church" in the back, "No God" is written on the wall. Don't know if this has any value or not, but what the hey! ;)

And finally, this is one of the more clever (and probably one of the most missed) little refrence in this game would be the Florist in "hell" outside the antique shop. Not just any florist, but Mushnick's Florist to be exact! Sporting a sign that reads "Look for the fantastic new plant Audrey Junior". And if ya don't know what that is, watch "The Little Shop of Horrors" (thanx goes to my friend for pointing that out to me as well. ;)

Oh yeah, you ever notice how many damn book stores there are in this town?? There's at least 2 in every section it seems like... (kinda interesting seeing as that there are so many references to famous books and authors, and a lot of bookstores everywhere...)

I guess the designers smoked crack and read horror books one night, then came up with SH :)

Darkmage keeps crankin' 'em out:
These are things that are in places in Silent Hill:
1. In the "other church" behind the antique shop the words "No God" ar are written on a wall. (That's two that's noticed that :)
2. I came across an occult site that had pictures of mythical demons and their descriptions. The pyramid thing Harry got in the game was called "flauros", flauros was the name of a demon who had the body of a man, but the head of a cat.
3.The cult members in Silent Hill were using the drug white claudia in their ceremonies. In the other church, at the altar there is a gold cup. Make Harry go up to it and press the X button and he will say " some kind of white powder is in the cup", thus Dahlia was using the drug too.
4. The visions Harry had of things that happened to Alessa in the past is like Stephen King's "The Langoliers", where a group of people are transported into the past.
5.In the final fmv, before you fight the final boss, Dahlia says, "I was shocked to learn that the talisman of Metraton was being used". In hebrew folklore Metraton was an avenging angel that protected innocent people form evil. This could this be what freed Alessa from the evil spell that kept her alive after the fire. Why else would Dalhia be talking about it?
6. In the game Cheryl was taken away from Harry by an evil force. This is strangely alike to the story in Stephen King's "Storm of the Century" where a ancient being with supernatural powers comes to an island off the coast of Maine to take a child to raise as his own. Not to give too much away, the evil being is a man called Linoge, which is just another spelling for the word Legion from the story in the bible about a demon named legion.
7. Finally the zombie nurses and doctors in the hospital, Night of the Living Dead, anyone?

Darkmage sez:
1. In the upper floor of the school there are drawings on the walls. Some are of little creatures that look like those little bear monsters that have the huge claws. If you look at them with the self view you can make out words that say "kill it".
2. In the waiting room at the hospital(where we first met Lisa) there is a desk, on it are several things. One is a photo of a young girl that looks surprisingly like Alessa or Cheryl.
New revelations - Lisa might have been used by Dahlia and Alessa. When Dahlia used Harry to capture Alessa, Lisa might have been employed by Alessa to stop him. Remember when Harry would go out to search for Cheryl (who was really Alessa), Lisa was so determined to keep him at the hospital with her. She even said that she wasn't supposed to leave the hospital, if she did there would be nothing stopping Harry from recapturing Alessa with the flauros. And every time Harry might have stayed with Lisa, Harry would always be torn back through realities. So Dahlia might have been trying to keep Harry after Alessa by keeping Lisa from convincing him to stay with her. Alessa might have been the only thing keeping Lisa from turning undead, remember it was only after Dahlia recaptured Alessa that Lisa started to change. So when Alessa was no longer able to use or protect Lisa she started to change like the others in the hospital. This is just a theory that I have pieced together from playing Silent Hill, and from other Silent Hill sites I have been to. I really like Lisa so I have devoted a lot of my time figuring out stuff about her.

Also I discovered a site some time ago for the S.T.A.R.S. voice talent agency, the same agency that the voice actors from Silent Hill work for ( if you check the credits you can see this) in it I found pictures of the people who did the voices for Cybil and Lisa !

Darkmage:
Here's some stuff I found while playing Silent Hill:
1.On a building across from the antique shop, and down a little there is a small poster that says, "Tourists remember to try wonderful new plant". This could be about the White Claudia.
2. In the hospital there is a photo of a man standing next to a building, this looks just like the one that showed the "Grand Opening of Norman's Motel".
3. The nurses and doctors, and Cybil all had something that controlled them (the leech in Cybil), or caused them to walk around when dead (the humps on the nurses). In the B-horror movie "Night of the Creeps" these weird leech things enter people's bodies and control them and cause dead people to come back.
4.These aren't about anything involved with the story or things in Silent Hill, they're just things you can find that are weird. Like on a building by the antique shop there is a picture of an oriental guy smiling and saying, "HYPE!". Another thing is in a room at Norman's Motel (the one where you find the magnet, I think) there is a poster of what seems to be a naked woman! There's not very much detail but you can clearly see the shape of a nude, or partially nude woman.

This is from Brian McKay who has written a SecretsFAQ that details some of the things found here.

1)Just north and west of the gas station, across the street from it, is a business called "JIM BEAM". The logo for the business is the label from the Jim Beam bottle. Too bad Harry can't go inside for a quick snort. (The garage door with REDRUM on it is just a few feet east of this business).

2)There are green and red posters throughout the school with faint writing that looks like "THE MARTIANS HAVE ARRIVED". Possibly a tribute to HG Wells' "War of the Worlds".

3)In the Library reserve, there is a poster that says "A WOMAN CAME DOWN FROM THE PLANET VULCAN". Some people have thought it said "Klingons" instead of "A Woman". It is badly pixelized and hard to read. It looks like it says "Woman" to me, though, since there is also a woman's face below the text.

4)There is a theater marquee in Central Silent Hill that is hard to read because it's high up and there are trees in the way, but it seems to say "SHOOT" on the east side of the marquee (appropriate for this game). In the center panel of the marquee it seems to say "EZEKIEL", possibly the theater's name?. On the west panel, there is a man's face staring down at you. Who he is, I don't know. Possibly the star of the action blockbuster film "SHOOT"?

5)In the police station, there is a poster that says "DRUGS" and shows a man's face that is half normal and half-skull. Kind of creepy looking, and reminiscent of the final scene in "Psycho" when a skull is superimposed over Norman Bate's face.

6)The poster of the nurse in the hospital has text that is very hard to read. I can't make out the middle word at all, but the first and third words seems to say "Last," and then "Life" or "Live" or maybe "Alive". This may be a cryptic message referring to Lisa, who is a nurse and the last one left alive in the hospital. Or maybe I'm just reading waaaay to much into these things :)

7)There is a calendar on some of the hospital walls, with a picture of what looks like a little girl with short dark hair. Possibly a reference to Cheryl/young Alessa.

8)There is a place called SOUTH PARK on the resort area map - the one town in America that is possibly more bizarre than Silent Hill.

9)This one sent in by a reader. His comments are the ones in Quotes.

"Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact location (but I'm reasonably sure it's near the church, or at least in the section of Silent Hill after the first boss),"

>>Actually, it's on the Southeast corner of Finney and Bachman in the beginning of the game.

"but there's a business labeled "Metropol". The sign is the exact same sign (font and all) as the Metropol theatre sign from the film "Demons". (a famous Italian cult-classic about a theatre that becomes possessed with demons and traps all the audience within) Just another little tidbit of info in this elaborately detailed game"

Also, one thing I noticed when I went to take a closer look, there are posters all over the walls outside Metropol with a really demonic-looking woman's face on them. I assume that it's relevant to the movie "Demons", but it had a very Linda Blair/Exorcist look to it.

Josh sends in this:

1. In the normal school there are alot of posters. But one seems to be everywhere on every wall its, greenish-blue and pink. It clearly states "A Friend In Need" and has a picture of a mans face. He has black hair and the facial features look a bit familiar... it almost looks like Harry, a true friend in need...

2.On the way to the lighthouse try and shoot one of those moth creatures into the water, its very easy and really cool when you hear that awesome "splash!". It's not as easy to shoot one into a chasm, but its possible too. I've also shot a winged beast onto a car, there was a cool thump there.

3.If you go into the bus(located outside the school a ways, just follow the side walk) at night it looks like the windows were shot out...nothing really to cool there, just another one of those things Konami took a little extra time on.

4.In the normal school if you go into the second floor bathroom and walk in all the way you hear a childs sobs. Its useless to check the stalls, there is no response to it. But the stranger thing is that the bathroom in the alternate school does have a response when you try the stall....could this be that same sobbing kid?

5.More about the body in the stall, i did first person view mode when walking into the stall, and not only was i scared the hell out of but i noticed that there were hospital IVs sticking out of the dead guy's waist, since the whole game in a way revolves around the events at the hospital and the hospital itself i found the IVs a little strange.

And more:

1. I have heard from several friends of mine that there is a new trippy scene in the amusement park. if you want it you have to use the bottle of epiglotis (the red stuff found in the hospital) on the little black ghost baby standing next to you at the ice cream stand with the memo pad. If you succeceed theres a cool weird scene that follows, don't ask me to explain it, its too hard, but see it for yourself!

I can definitely confirm this as I've done it myself. Apparently this is a glitch that allows you to save Cybil without ever having to confront her. However, the scene that follows is very glitchy - characters are distorted and zip across the screen. After that though, the game returns to normal.

2.The sixth ending that has been rumored is impossible if you think about it, how are you supposed to kill that lizard in the school with a hand held weapon and actually move into his mouth to do it? It's impossible.

3.At the end of the game, the bright light that is revealed that Harry runs to with baby Cheryl, is a lot like something in the Medieval times. They used to think that instead of going to heaven to be judged you instead went to hell where you'd be judged, and if judged worthy of heaven a light would appear.

4.I think I've found a way to get into that hospital parking lot. I've kinda been searching a LOT to find that special way there and I've noticed something strange... First of all there are apartment buildings next to the hospital, the apartments have an alleyway jutting into them, I noticed that there was a fire escape ladder up above me in the alleyway. So I ran over to the parking lot and looked through the fence, there I saw an ambulance...and next to it a fire escape.

5.Next to where the land falls into the river on Bachman Road there's a fence, if you look at it through first person you see that there is a "No Trespassing" sign there. But exactly what is there to trespass on? The river? I don't think so. It's just a kind of funny thing I've noticed there.

SailerJupe notices:

After you've beaten the hell school and everything returns to normal, when you try to leave it says: "It's unlocked" meaning it was locked from the outside, how in the world did Harry get in?

And also, when you get the video tape from the basement [were Alessa was kept] It took me awhile but I realised it was Lisa! (and in the video she must be promising NOT to tell anyone about Alessa) She worked on Alessa's wounds [the burns] and no matter what happened to Alessa, Alessa didn't die [Which scared Lisa] . I think theres some weird connection between who has been with Alessa, I think because Lisa worked on Alessa she didn't turn into one of those other nurses, because Alessa was thanking Lisa for helping her, but after Alessa was cought, she couldn't help her anymore. And when you read Lisa's diary, she must be talking about Alessa, and the effects that were being caused [throwing up bile, the blood and puss, that nice stuff].

When you're at the store that has the Norman picture, there's a diary, and it talks about a lady and a man, and when you go into a house (apartment) there's another diary, he's talking about packages between this man and a woman, Dahlia and Kaufmann? Perhaps? It makes sense, Kaufmann says Dahlia betrayed him, maybe he was supplying her with something... maybe the drugs! There are drugs in the store, in the safe. It's just a hunch, but if you think about it, it makes perfect sense! >:P

Brett writes:

The Croatoan, or Croatan, was an indian tribe off the coast of North Carolina, when the colonists disappeared they found CRO in a tree and the word Croatoan in a sign post. This led them to believe the colonists were absorbed into the tribe and later reinforced by a group of half-indians half-english people who claimed to be descendants of the croatoan, I personally believe it was more of a bloody mess and the english settlers were slaughtered, why else would they hurriedly carve CRO and Croatoan into a tree and sign post and then abandon all other ties to there english country? Or maybe its just me wanting it to be more of a bloody horror end.

Pyronx59 sends in this:

After beating the game I got some weird ideas:
I only got one ending but after I defeated the winged demon (samael i think) the angel looking Alessa handed me a baby then Cybil Harry and Kaufmann were about to escape then Lisa pops up through a hole in the ground and she takes Kaufmann.

Heres the question:
Why did she take Kaufmann? Why not Harry? Harry was quite rude to her when she started changing. She asked for help and he runs and blocks the door.

(The theory) At the beginning movie when Harry's driving, Lisa and Kaufmann were fighting. Why is that? After thinking about it I came to a conclusion. I think Kaufmann tricked her into joining the devil's plan to make samael be born and after she found out she probably found that she was a zombie also. So after that Dahlia makes Lisa forget everything and then knocks Lisa out so she doesn't remember.

Remember the scene where Dahlia, Kaufmann, the doctor, and Lisa I think it was? Well if the doctors were under strict orders to stay out of the basement storeroom how come it was those people only? How did those people only find out? I think it was in a past life they may have been devil messengers or something and maybe the devil or something said if they helped samael be born he would grant them power from Alessa.

Recently playing the game I went for the gas can and before I entered I noticed an odd sign it says Super Tuesday or Tuesdays. The rest I think says 6 cars from formula hell.

Everyone loves Darkmage :)

1. When Harry first meets Dahlia at the church, she says something like "your coming was foretold by Gyromancy". Gyromancy is a very old divination ritual where a person walks in a circle marked with letters until they become dizzy and stumble at different points, thus spelling out a prophecy.

2.In the game's story, when Alessa awoke from her "sleep", the nightmares she had been having for the seven years manifested into physical form. From things I have seen in the game, things from memories in her life may also have been manifested- like in the house, right before you fight the final boss, there is a framed picture of a corpse hanging from a wall, the inspiration for the ones we found in the nightmare school, boat, and in the begining demo level. In the schools infirmary there is a thing that looks just like the stone of time. And also the burning corpse in the level where you fight the lizard, Alessa was the one who was terribly burned in a fire.

3.In the school there was a sign that was like the one "notice hell is coming", but it said "notice your in hell", was all I could make out.

More:

In the game you have the NEXT FEAR option. If you get this option you start the same thing all over again. In essence Harry is repeating the same nightmare, and is doomed to repeat it over and over again. In the movie "Lost Highway", a man is in hell and has to repeat the same horrifying experience of his life forever. (I have to thank my brother, and fellow horror fan Jay for telling me about Lost Highway).
And in the movie Storm of the Century, the little phrase Andre Linoge had: "Hell is Repetition".

S.I. says:

John Wyndham's book "The Midwich Cuckoos" has children who are evil. The book is referred to in SH by Midwich St which has Midwich school which contains the demon children.

Someone mentioned a 'Norman's Motel'. This reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho', where Norman Bates owns the motel. 'Psycho' is also a book by Robert Bloch, who is referred to in SH with Bloch St.

Brian McKay:

Here's another one someone who read my FAQ sent in: "Hi Brian,
Thanks for maintaining your Silent Hill FAQ. I always love reading these things when I finish a game and want to see all the little things that I might have missed. I laughed when I read the bit about the posters next the the cafe pinball machine; I can't believe I missed them while I was playing! I can tell you exactly what they are, if you haven't already learned: while Stephen King was a student at the University of Maine, he had a local reputation for being a particularly oddball columnist for the school paper, the Maine Campus (of which I was an editor for a while, albeit over 20 years after the fact). During one semester's finals week, the paper published a two-page, pull-out poster of a psycotically grinning King leveling a double-barrelled shotgun at the viewer, with the bold caption, "STUDY, DAMMIT!" I learned of this some years ago when King was speaking at some public function (he lives in Bangor, Maine, wher I used to live, where he performs random philanthropic acts while the local press swarms around him) and at one point held up a copy of this poster and told its story.

Hilarious :)

Josh has more:

1.The shops in the first part of the game are strangly named. The Cafe is called Cafe 5 to 2 and the convience store is either an S or an 8 i cant figure it out. Theres a small bar that has a neon sign promoting Milliers "High Life" and a store with the simple name of +. (Theres a picture of a shocked woman on the windows of +) There is also a coffee shop called "Fresh Roasted Coffee" and wo could live without the wonder dining of "Poston Market"? "Horned Moon Dance" seems to be a...well... dance place?? And a place called "Ghoul", thats probably a local tavern because next to it theres a poster with a red can of beer on it. On Bachman St. theres a bus bench that says "Gangusta Paradise" and has four men in the picture. The other bus stop bench had words crossed out on it and i cant quite make it out. Theres a Silver Goods store on the same street and Mark Twain Books and Gifts, and Top Sales. (you see Top Sales again near the hospital) Theres a backwards poster with the "Bic Beat" posted on it too, its all pretty cool. And theres much more on just about every street.
2. In the alternate school if you go into the girls bathroom before going into the boys bathroom (the one with the shotgun) the world outside will change completetly. Walk back into the girls bathroom and come back out it will return to normal.

Darkmage sees all, knows all:

here's a fresh new list of theories and stuff I have seen in Silent Hill.
1.Right across from the cut-rite chainsaw store,on a brick wall, there are posters that say "Welcome to Ltra"(what significance this has I am still looking for)
2.In a room in the nightmare school, the one with the large fans, there are signs that say "what are you doing here?" its pretty hard to make out though.
3. A theory of mine- Besides Dahlia and Kaufmann there were several others in the cult. I believe the corpse we found in the nightmare school bathroom was one of them. He could have found himself in the nightmare world(like Lisa). With all the monsters around he took a shotgun to protect himself. He might have found a chapter in "the monster lurks" book that explained just what was happening, that a girls nightmares(Alessa) were being manifested into physical form. But Alessa found him and killed him for all the pain he helped inflict on her. But not before he wrote on the wall what he had found in the book, as a dying act to explain to anyone who found him what was going on.
4.In the classroom in the normal school there is the phrase "who are you" on the wall. This might signify Alessa/Cheryl. Sense Alessa was Cheryl the "who are you might mean she didn't know who she was until she got back to Silent hill. Also theres the term "me are you" turn it around- you are me, again saying that Cheryl was Alessa.
5.The movie phantoms is really similar to Silent Hill too, it had a deserted town, strange noises over phones, a moth creature, monster dogs, ect.

Kennedy says:

Upon watching the movie "The Lost Highway" by David Lynch, you will see that many of the names used are very similar....
I'll have to check this movie out...

Darkmage makes a correction:

In the list where i mentioned how Harry was seeing visions of the past, about what happened to Alessa. My list said that it was like the movie Langoliers, I got mixed up in Stephen King movies. What I ment to type was that Harrys visions were like The Shining, where a boy can see visions of past events.

Ital says:

I think that the reason Lisa took Kaufmann in the end instead of Harry was b/c of this: first, mysteriously everyone in Silent Hill disappeared. Kauffman, Lisa , and Dahlia were the only members still around. Cybil was an officer in an area NEAR Silent Hill, and Harry was a tourist. In the end, Lisa dies. If you get a good or good plus ending Kauffman will kill Dahlia (which makes him the only person from Silent Hill originally still alive). Then, as everyone is escapin and after Samael is defeated, Lisa takes Kauffman down w/ her. That makes it so no one who from Silent Hill survived.

Darkmage has more:

1. In the library in the nightmare school, where we find the book "the monster lurks", there are many other books stacked on the shelves. The title on these books seem to say "holy bible"
2 And also in the nightmare school, in the bathrooms, the sinks are splattered with blood. This mimics a scene in Stephen Kings "It" where a blood splatteres all over a girls bathroom sink.

John Grigaitis observes:

Doesn't Dr. Michael Kauffman look like Robert De Niro?

LOL! Hey! You talkin' to me? Are you talkin to me?

Gothic points out:

In the normal school you go into the locker room and there is the cat in one of the lockers...while walking around the school there are a few posters with a white dogs face...i inspected it and found that the words on the poster looked to say "DOG KILL CAT"...

Darkling has this to say:

Some of the stores in Silent Hill are interestingly familiar: Poston Market, Queen Burger... (~_*)
I think that there maybe some credibility to the house boat story. Play through the game and ignore the Police Station. The result is when you try to look at the "white claudia" book it will say something along the lines of "I don't need to look at this right now". This similarity has got me sending Harry door-to-door looking for answers. Maybe its just KONAMI's idea of a joke.
Also there is the alley way where one of the "Keys of the Eclipse" is found. Is it just me or did someone do a layup with the dog head?

Swoosh!

Darkmage is da man!

Well most or all of us know that the horrible pain Alessa was put in by the fire cause her soul or part of her soul to leave her body. I believe that it was her whole soul, and the soul that remained in her burnt body was that of Samiel. So Alessa's soul manifested itself into a new form, the baby that Harry and his wife found. But in many superstitions around the world it was beileved that if the body was put into enough pain it would cause the soul to leave the body, to get away from the pain.

Dark Justice Six:

1.Story...why Lisa took Michael at the end...if you notice all through out the game they talk about and there are books and pictures of this drug, the police are looking for it.in the police station it says that they found out it is coming from the hospital.and in the convenient store there are drugs in the safe.in the notebook near the safe we find out "he" is dealing drugs.that "he" is micheal. He is the town drug dealer.(now here is where lisa comes in...) In her diary that you find after her death, she is hallucinating badly and says she needs the drug.In an office in the hospital,a book is turned to the page with the drug on it,it says the drug causes holoucination. So,lisa had to be on the drug!!! there for, hating Michael for giving her the drug in the first place!!! I hope this cleared that up.
2.Game Play...GameShark...if you use gameshark and do the "walk through walls code" you see the coolest stuff EVER! you can visit rooms that were never put in the game! also, you can go to anyroom in the game just by walking in its direction, even the rooms never accessable in the game! the development team must have decided to eliminate these rooms by blocking them off! another cool thing is,the places where you can see bodys off in the distance(nightmare School) you can walk right up to them and check them out.You can even walk on air(across the places of no road) This is very cool stuff, you should check it out.
3.Resemblence...Nightmare World...the nightmare world is kinda like the "Nightmare on Elmstreet" movies, how everything is burned and rusted.and how the world shifts when harry "goes to sleep" and wakes up with lisa,is like when they teens fall asleep and go to freddy's house.

Christi:

I thought you might want to add this reference to your list. In the storeroom in the hospital (where Harry opens the bag of jellybeans), there are several boxes on a shelf labeled Psychic TV. That's the name of a really strange British band. I haven't heard too much of their music, but some of it is very similar to the music in the game. Psychic TV is led by frontman Genesis P-Orridge, who fled to the US after British authorities mistook a Psychic TV performance art tape as evidence of satanic child abuse. If he ever returns to England, he will be sent to prison and his children will be taken away from him.

Applez theorizes:

You know when you're in he hallway after the Child's Room when Dahlia says, "Here in lies the mothers womb, containing the power to create life", "I COULD HAVE DONE IT ALL MYSELF"? Well I think she meant was that she could have had the baby Samael and Kaufman could've found out about it some how. It makes perfect sence if you think about it like how Dahlia says "Alessa will be the mother of god" and why she needed Cheryl....
Just wonderin something very weird: could Dr Kaufman be Alessa's biological dad? same hair and looks kind of the same and if you get a good ending you hear Dahlia go, "Your part in this be over."

Sean thinks:

I think Cheryl is gonna get kidnapped once again and Lisa and Kaufmann are gonna come back from hell.{remember when Lisa died and the at the end pulled Kaufmann down with her through the ground basically pulling him down to hell with her}.

Wes postulates:

If you've seen or read The Langoliers by Stephen King, everybody on the plane disappears except for those that are asleep. The same is true in Silent Hill. The only people who don't disappear are: Harry-unconcious from the crash,
Lisa-said she fell unconcious and when she woke up it was like "this",
and Kauffman-was asleep and woke up to find everybody had disappeared.

Joe Diamond notes:

Did you ever realize that there are guns and ammo in places that they usually shouldn't be? In Midwich Elementary (it's an ELEMENTARY SCHOOL , right?) what are handgun bullets, shotgun shells, and a sawed off double-barrelled Remington shotgun doing in an elementary schoool?! And in Alchemilla Hospital, what are bullets doing there? And if it's illegal to carry a concealed weapon in the United States, what is Kaufmann doing with a .38 Special? All the cars won't run! So he can't go home and get it!!!! It is, however, alright to find a Remington 700 Rifle in that mall, since you can buy guns and ammo at the sporting shops in there.

More from Joe Diamond

Ever get a good look at Cybil's buns, hot ain't she, but she's a cop, why did she give you a gun when there COULD be some people left in town, and you could probably turn around and go on a shooting rampage, for all we know she probably didn't search that good, ya know?

Hectorial:

Take a little note at the library in the school. Most of the shelves say "useless books here" or something. But some of the shelves say, "No special book here". Note that one is referring to all the books and the other to one. I would say it is just dribble if it said no special book"s" here but it just says book. Maybe there is one on the shelves. There may be a monster you missed in your enemies section. The winged beasts it the shopping district are different creatures than the other ones. I only say cause it takes more shots to take them down and when stomping on them they make a different noise than the normal swark the others make. Maybe they're armored. Remember that rumor about getting a different ending if you don't use hand guns and only use blunt objects. Then remember the guy that said that was impossible cause you couldn't kill the lizard without shooting it. Well, I haven't tried it but maybe the Alessa trick would work. Can't kill her without bullets so when you run out maybe she dies. Maybe if you cap off all your ammo the lizard would die cause you would be stuck otherwise. Technically you would be killing it without a handgun.

from radic19 also points out:

I laughed when i first saw the "Study Damnit!" poster. Because it's something somebody would get only if they read the biography of Stephen King aka Richard Bachman, "Study Damnit!" refers to a poster he made in College for his English Class.

At this point it wouldn't surprise me if King makes a cameo in SH2 :)

Feist has this to say:

There were a few things I noticed when I was locating the three keys to to the backdoor of the house on Levin st. There was the Lion key, the Scarecrow key, and the Woodsman key. Lion, Scarecrow, and Woodsman... sounds like a reference to The Wizard of OZ. In the original story the Tinman was also refered to a woodsman, for his job was to chop down wood. I also found it funny that the key to the front door of the house was found in the dog house. Toto anyone:) This reference somewhat supports the theory that Harry's Silent Hill experience was meerly a bad dream, just like when Dorothy went to OZ and later awoke to find that it was all just a dream. It is like Cheryl is Dorothy, stuck in OZ with everyone she knows from her real life. Weird huh?

Mike Morgan:

Have you ever noticed in silent hill when your in the back room of the Motel, there is a Porno magazine behined the newspaper on the desk? I sure did....

Oh, that Kaufmann!

TG "The Masters":

SailerJupe states in his first line that the school door is locked from the outside, which is true, but it gets locked immediatly after you enter the school, as I remember.

The Masters have a very interesting theory:

Does it seem to anyone else like there was another survivor running around in the town that Harry never met? My theory is that the crucified corpse in the Evil School bathroom stall (where you get the shotgun) was that other survivor. Think about it.. all around both schools, you find quick clues scribbled in blood, as if someone were leaving a trail for any who might follow (similar to Harry's scribblings on the notepads). Also, you can find a whole crapload of empty ammo boxes and health drinks (especially in the hallway between schools and the huge fan room on the Evil Side), as if someone were hacking their way through the nightmare before you even get there. Could it be that the health drinks and ammo you find in the schools were dropped by someone running for his life? Finally, the corpse you find in the stall has a gun with him and one last hasty clue scrawled on the wall (reference to the book you find elsewhere in the school), and the trail of clues and used items abruptly ends. Perhaps another lone gunslinger wondering what the hell was going on, whose luck was worse than Harry's?

Darkmage adds:

I forgot to put in this occult reference - In many ancient cultures, it was believed that if a person's body experienced enough pain, the soul would leave the body in order to protect itself. Some people like shamans and others would even perform many gruesome rituals on themselves to reach this.

Keep 'em comin' everyone.
