The original titles for E.T. were Growing Up, A Boy's Life, and E.T. and Me.
Pay close attention to Elliot's teacher. You can never see his face, but you might recognize his voice. It is the husband of screenwriter Melissa Mathison, Harrison Ford.
The script originally had Elliot placing a trail of M&M's to get E.T.'s attention, but the Mars company didn't want to have anything to do with the movie. Hershey gave the rights, however, to allow the film to use Reese's Pieces. Sales of Reese's Pieces tripled in the two weeks after E.T.'s release.
E.T.'s voice was done by actress Debra Winger and housewife Marin County. Marin County was in her 60s. The producers made County do E.T.'s voice without her dentures.
