Thoth was the god of wisdom and the scribal profession, he was the scribe to the gods and also their messenger. He was frequently represented recording important proceedings, such as at the "Weighing of the Heart" ceremony which was believed to take place after death. During this trial the heart was weighed against the principle of truth and justice. Often during burial a large "heart scarab" would be wrapped up in the bandaging. This was a form of protection, the scarab was inscribed on the underside with a chapter from the Book of the Dead. It was a spell thought to prevent the heart from owning up to any crimes the person had committed in life. "O my heart which I had upon earth...do not speak against me concerning what I have done..."
