MEL C AND GERI HAD FRIENDLY CHAT

It happened on Friday night at the Music For Life Charity. Mel C approached Geri a little bit before the show began and the girls chatted for 20 minutes. Melanie C told reporters afterward:

"Everyone thought there was going to be a cat fight, but there never was because there was never any animosity between us. We have spoken and we are still friends. We were very close before and there is no change. We didn't talk about work at all, we talked about boys and things."

SPICE GIRLS WILL RECEIVE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

THE Spice Girls are to receive the special Outstanding Contribution To The British Music Industry Award at the 2000 BRIT Awards ceremony due to be held in London on Friday, March 3.

The girls will also be performing a medley of their greatest hits live onstage when they close the show at the west London venue Earls Court Arena.

The Brit Awards 2000! Yes, it's that time of year again, well not quite, they have moved back the Brit awards this year to March 3rd, but preperations are under way. The great news is that the Spice Girls will be given the lifetime achievement award this year! The girls were honored and thrilled when they learned the news this afternoon. British Phonographic Industry Chairman Rob Dickins said: "The Spice Girls have smashed most world-wide record books in their own way much as the Beatles did in the 60s."

Spice Girls have released a statement:

"We are overjoyed to have been asked to accept this award. We are still young and have, we hope, many more years to enjoy being part of the great British music scene. Spice Girls started out as five and we feel this award is in recognition of the great achievements of all five."

Both the Spice Girls and former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell will be performing at the award show. But the girls were unable to say whether former singer Geri Halliwell would join them to receive the honour. A spokeswoman for the group was asked if Geri would accept the award with them. She said:

"Nobody knows yet, nobody has had that discussion yet. The Girls only found out this afternoon."

MEL C FEELS CRITICISM

In an interview with Melanie C this morning on BBC Radio 1, Melanie was asked about how she takes all the criticism critics have given her on her solo work. She admitted that she did get a bit depressed about it, but says she got over it. Melanie said:

I was very naive when I realised the album. The thing is the Spice Girls is half of me, whereas my solo material is the whole of me. I wasn't prepared for all the criticism I got and I took it very badly. But people can think what they want. The thing is, other people's opinions have got nothing to do with you, because you are the only one that really knows yourself."

VICTORIA'S PARKINSON INTERVIEW

Posh Spice decided to go to doctors after being afraid that she was losing too much weight, she has disclosed. Victoria made the admission in an interview with Michael Parkinson, due to be broadcast on BBC1.

The wife of England soccer star David Beckham said: "It did worry me. I did go to the doctors, it worried me because I started to get paranoid so I went to the doctors and said 'look, is there anything wrong with me?'."

"I wanted to be totally checked out because I was eating perfectly fine, exactly as I always have done, and I was losing weight.

"They just said it's just something that happens when you have children. My mum lost three stone after she had my brother, so it's hereditary.

"I think that I could probably do with putting on weight, but I just eat what I eat and this is the way I am.

She went on: "We were out at dinner the other day and I was absolutely bursting for the toilet and it's quite sad to think you can't even go to the toilet because if you do, people are going to think you're throwing up.

"What really freaked me out about the whole weight issue wasn't actually the weight issue in the end, it was the fact that in the past if I'd been in the press I'd been with the Spice Girls or with David and for the first time it was just me.

"I was completely singled out and I think it was the whole attention, just the fact that people were that interested in me, that kind of freaked me out more than anything really."

Victoria also said that the couple had hired a bodyguard for son Brooklyn following kidnap threats.

POSH Spice Victoria Beckham last night said she has been given the all-clear by doctors despite her dramatic weight loss. The star told chat show host Michael Parkinson in an interview to be aired tonight on BBC1 that she has consulted specialists since giving birth to baby Brooklyn - and been assured she is perfectly healthy.

And far from feeling weak or ill she is fighting fit and about to write and record a solo album.

The 25-year-old superstar wife of footballer David Beckham said: "I did go to the doctors because I started to get paranoid. I wanted to be checked out because I was eating perfectly well and losing weight.

"They said it's just something that happens when you have children. I think that I could probably do with putting on weight but I just eat what I eat and this is the way I am."

The glamorous singer revealed that her next career project would be a solo album. At the moment the Spice Girls' third album is half finished.

Parky - interviewed himself by Posh for her Channel 4 programme Victoria's Secrets earlier this month - was dying to know whether her husband really does wear her knickers.

But the star who has said that David prefers her G-strings, admitted it was just a bit of fun. She said: "It was a joke. I mean, as if he'd wear my knickers!"

MEL C HELPS THE HOMELESS

Melanie C has decided to become a sort of ambassador to the homeless. She will donate all proceeds from her upcoming single "Never Be The Same Again/If That Were Me" will be donated to the homeless.

Melanie said:
"Because of the success I have had with The Spice Girls, I now have a lot of money, more than I ever thought I'd have in my life. I've got a really beautiful flat. Sometimes I just sit there and think, 'God, I live in the most beautiful place and some people don't even have a roof over their head'. That's what the song If That Were Me is about. My first contribution is in writing this song and I will give the proceeds to charity. That's just the beginning. I want to take an active role in helping homeless people. It's something I feel very strongly about. The great thing about being a celebrity is that you can draw people's attention to issues like this. You could say I'm on my soapbox about homelessness."

SPICE GIRLS CONCERTS ONLINE: CYBERCONCERTS

The Spice Girls have signed an exclusive three-year deal to perform a series of shows online for subscribers at Cyberconcerts. One London newspaper worked out that if 10 million people paid £10 each to watch Sporty, Scary, Baby and Posh strut their stuff, £100 million would be made from one concert. Even if the Spices took just half that cash they'd end up with £12.5 million each, not bad for one night's work. Cyberconcerts is run by ex-Pink Floyd manger Mark Morrison and TV producer Mike Mansfield. Mike Mansfield said:

"We have to sit down with the Spice Girls and work out where we will do our first show with them, but it won't be until 2001."

Melanie G

Ay up, ahhhhh great to have a break. But it's back to BUSY BUSY BUSY. I'll have my solo album out early this summer but we haven't decided on a title yet. We will also be putting out a single but I can't even tell you what that will be at the moment (I know- sorry!). What I can tell ya though is I that I have been in the studio with the likes of JAM & LEWIS who has worked with: Janet Jackson, Boyz II Men AND Mary J. Blige), TEDDY RILEY (from Blackstreet) , and SISQO (from Dru Hill). Yep you can probably guess from that little lot that the album is going to have a RnB flava to it. It will have and sounds absolutely wicked. Not to mention the new Spice single...

Victoria

I hoped you enjoy watching the "Secrets Show" . I am really pleased with how it went down. I don't mind admitting I was really nervous before hand! Over 5 million people tuned in which should make Channel 4 happy! I have been since flooded with offers for TV and film which is really flattering but I really want to take my time before committing myself. That's all from me right now. Em?

Emma

I am really enjoying the VH1 shows and have been getting loads of offers too but I'm incredibly excited about the new Spice album that we are working on! It is already sounding fantastic! Also "What I Am" has only just come out in the rest of Europe so I will be smooching around playing a few TV shows. We have been talking about the album but I can't really say anything at the moment. The Show from before Christmas will be out later this year but only be out on DVD (that's a posh video between you and me!).

Melanie C

It's all go again with the new single coming out. It's called "Never Be the Same Again" and will be out at the start of March. TLCs Lisa Lopes does a sound rap on it. What's more there's a new track on there also called "I Wonder What It Would Be Like". I will be touring again later as the first one went down so well. Byeeeeeeeeeeee. Then of course there is the next Spice album which we have nearly finished. We may well tour later in the year when we release it. Phew!

GERI AND MEL C WILL PERFORM AT SAME CONCERT

SPICE GIRLS' Melanie C and former bandmate Geri Halliwell are to share the same bill for the first time since 1998. The two, who are both pursuing solo careers, will appear at a sold-out charity concert at the Manchester Evening News Arena in Manchester on Friday January 28. It is unlikely however, that Sporty and the artist formerly known as Ginger, who left the group in May 1998, will share the same stage. According to BBC Online a spokesman for Halliwell said: "It's not as if they will be on stage together. Geri is headlining the show and Mel C is opening it." The Music For Life concert has been organised by local radio station Key 103 to raise funds for the city's specialist cancer unit at the Christie Hospital.

MEL G: BACK IN BRITIAN

Melanie G arrived back in London yesterday after vacationing at the Thai island of Phucket. So Mel could slip out with Phoenix without being hounded by photographers, her sister, Danielle Brown, who had been on holiday with the Mel and has a similar hairstyle, pushed the baby's stroller through the airport. Danielle, 18, an actress whose most high profile role has been in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale, looked just like the 24-year-old singer - except for one crucial difference. The buggy did not contain a child, but a large doll. Just behind her, the real Mel G clutched her 10-month-old daughter close to her chest and covered their faces with a jacket.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan police later admitted that police at the airport had over-reacted by having so many officers to take care of the pop star. "In this particular case the police expected that more fans and members of the media would turn up than actually did," said the spokesman, adding that whenever high profile figures arrived at the airport, it was part of the role of officers stationed there to attend to control crowds.

Mel, returning from two weeks in Thailand following a recent split from her husband Jimmy Gulzar, needn't have worried. At 7am there were no fans around. Mel, who is reported to have negotiated at £1.25 million divorce with her husband, has been married for 16 months. Reports last week said that her lawyers had made a deal with Mr Gulzar to give him £750,000 cash and a £500,000 property in London. He had apparently rejected an earlier deal worth £1 million.

However this morning as she was bundled into the back of a chauffeur-driven V-reg silver Mercedes it looked like just another day of trying to stay one step ahead of the public.

THE SPICE GIRLS ARE ROCKIN' WITH RODNEY JERKINS

The Spice Girls are pressing onward with plans to release an album before the end of this year, despite a tumultuous start of the New Year for two of the girls. The bad news began immediately with the official news that "Scary Spice" Mel G and husband Jimmy Gulzar separated on New Year’s Day. Just days later, it was revealed to the media that late last year Scotland Yard foiled a kidnap plot against Victoria "Posh Spice" Adams and her young son, Brooklyn.

Meanwhile, work on the Spice Girls’ third set continues as the album’s executive producer Rodney Jerkins tells LAUNCH. "I’m doing nine songs on the album -- executive producing the album. I’m due to work back with them at the end of this month, so hopefully, it will come out and we’ll win Grammy’s next year for that one."

Jerkins added that he’d like to do something a little bit different for the follow-up to 1997’s Spiceworld. The superstar producer tells LAUNCH that he’d like to include at least one rock song on the set. "I want to do a rock song with them," he says. "You know, when I think of the Spice Girls, I think of them as entertainers and performers, so I’m going to try to make songs that I know they can perform to and do live and see people go crazy to, and all that kind of stuff."

Jerkins explains to LAUNCH that, aside from the rock track, he’s just looking to blend his ideas and his sound with theirs. "I’m trying to mix it up. Basically, I’m giving them a new sound, but at the same time I’m attempting to do something different myself, which is: do what they do but add my flavor to it. It’s like a mixture of what I do and what they do, and bringin’ it home, you know?"

In addition to Jerkins, producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (Janet Jackson) have also collaborated with the Spice Girls for two tracks on the new album.

MEL G RETAINS CUSTODY IN DIVORCE AGREEMENT

Scary Spice Melanie G. has reportedly reached a million-dollar divorce settlement with Jimmy Gulzar, the Dutch dancer she married back in September 1998 and with whom she has a ten-month-old daughter, Phoenix Chi. The British tabloid "The Daily Mail" reports that Melanie G. will retain custody of the child as part of the terms of divorce, while Gulzar will receive a cash payment of $1.23 million and retain possession of a London apartment valued at $820,000. Gulzar was believed to have originally asked for more than $16 million for the divorce, which was filed shortly after the couple split following an argument on New Year's Day. Mel G. is currently thought to be on vacation in Thailand, following the Spice Girls' short U.K. tour in December.

VICTORIA'S SECRETS PULLS IN 4.3 MILLION VIEWERS

Posh Spice's debut as a TV interviewer was a ratings winner, attracting 4.2 million viewers for Victoria's Secrets. The show, broadcast at 10pm on Tuesday night, pulled in 22 per cent of the audience - double Channel 4's usual catch at that time of night, The Sun reported. Almost as many people watched the 25-year-old Spice Girl interview famous faces like husband David Beckham and friend Sir Elton John as tune into Friends. A Channel 4 spokesman said: 'We are very pleased. Clearly Victoria and David Beckham are a point of fascination for the British public.' BBC1's Burgled, shown at the same time as Victoria's Secrets, only attracted 3 million viewers, while Prince Edward's documentary Crown and Country on ITV in the London region, pulled in 3.9 million. But even though Posh beat the opposition hands down, Channel 4 said it had no plans for a follow-up to the one-off show.

VICTORIA'S SECRETS

Mrs Beckham presents her own show - and just when it seems she can't think of a more inane question to ask, she manages it reports TOM LEONARD from London.

He was sent off for fouling in Manchester United game in Brazil, she let slip that he likes to wear her knickers, and they both are back on the front cover of OK! magazine, stealing the limelight at someone else's wedding.

It has been just another week in which David and Victoria Beckham have consolidated their brand position as Posh 'n Becks, Britain's most famous celebrity couple.

There will be some who think they already know quite enough about the cross-dressing footballer and his Spice Girl wife.

However, next week the last media vehicle left unexploited in the couple's relentless path to superstardom will finally shift into gear as Mrs Beckham presents her own television show.

Victoria's Secrets, a celebrity interview show which raises a question mark about Channel 4's remit to provide "ambitious and imaginative" programming to Britons, is Mrs Beckham's first foray into what she hopes will be a successful new career in television.

Anyone who has never understood why the Spice Girls have done so well will be similarly mystified why Channel 4 ever let Mrs Beckham in front of a camera.

Her impressive interview list includes Elton John, Vinnie Jones, Richard E Grant, Roger Moore, Michael Parkinson and her husband but she miraculously fails to get anything interesting out of them.

Perched in the back seat of a limo or a plane, Mrs Beckham zips from one celebrity interview to another in a quest to "reveal a different side" to herself and her fellow stars, generally asking them how they cope with fame.

"I'm really nervous. I don't know what to ask anybody", she confides. For once with the Beckhams this is no overstatement.

If there are any surprises in the 45-minute programme, it is that just when it seems she cannot possibly think of a more inane question to ask, she manages it. Having asked a gossip columnist if he gets stories about celebrity romances by being in the bedroom at the time, she goes to see the footballer-turned-actor Vinnie Jones on the set of his latest film.

"Is your trailer as big as Brad's [Pitt]?" she asks, adding without irony that he must "find it hard to be taken seriously as an actor".

Mrs Beckham goes straight for the jugular with Sir Elton. "So what kind of music do you like the best?" When he asks her what she thinks of the new album by the former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, she looks terrified.

She asks Michael Parkinson for some interviewing tips. "I've got to ask you about sexual chemistry," she says, presumably remembering at least one thing from the producer's briefing.

As a grand finale, she shares a sofa with a bandana-wearing Mr Beckham, admitting that "he reckons I'm not going to be any good at interviewing".

Having previously confessed she knows little about football - "I know what he [Beckham] does. He kind of bends the ball that way or something, you know." - she tries a different tack: "When did you realise you were going to be really famous?", "When did you get asked for your first autograph?" and the best of the lot - "Who has the most clothes, you or your wife?"

Sadly, she can't keep up the grilling for more than 20 seconds. Breaking into screeches of laughter that "I can't do it any more" she lunges across the sofa, flinging her arms round his neck.

There is no one-to-one meeting with the only star about whom Mrs Beckham has something interesting to say.

On her way to interview the fashion designer Valentino in Italy, she confides: "I'm going to ask him if the supermodel Naomi Campbell is really a complete bitch.

"Because he must know her pretty well and every time I've met her she's been a complete bitch but I'm the only one that admits it. But she is a nasty cow."

But she never plucks up the courage to mention Campbell, saving the programme from suddenly becoming entertaining, and instead says nice things about the designer's curtains.

But Mrs Beckham, who at one point remarks with satisfaction that her purple Louis Vuitton purse matches the plane she is about to board, is at pains to stress there is another side to her frivolous shopaholic image.

"People think I'm being serious and I really am having a laugh," she says at one point. "I do like going shopping but people think it's all there is to me. But there's a lot more."

She appears nervous throughout but Mrs Beckham is only caught off guard when a woman accosts her in a Sainsbury's car-park and tells her that Jesus loves her. "Oh thank you", she simpers.

Her penetrating gaze is turned on the press, namely Piers Morgan, editor of the Mirror. "He is one man who is incredibly powerful - it's really scary."

Morgan returns the sycophancy. "You've created a fantastic image which is awesomely powerful," he tells her. Inside the Mirror's office, she gently berates Morgan for being nasty to her husband during the World Cup and attacks press coverage of herself: "I could have a nervous breakdown. Every day it's something new", she observes.

But she still wants to know why a story about her weight - a recent Mirror front page splash - could be more important than wars and riots.

"We're in a celebrity age," says Morgan, which appears to be all the answer she needs. He does not add that it is an age which swallows celebrities and quickly spits them out. But Mrs Beckham, who is also trying to become an actress, gets some pertinent advice on that subject from the actor Richard E Grant when she tells him she hates seeing big stars going downhill.

"In 20 years time when you and David are doing Snow White in panto, I'm going to get this tape," he replies "and say 'Remember when you didn't want to be tired old has-beens?'."

Mel C was recently on Much Music's Rapid Fax, which is a show featuring the box office charts, single/album charts and news about different artists. In a very quick interview, Melanie C confirmed that "Never Be The Same Again" Mel C and Lisa is the next single, along with 'Go!' which is being released as a double-A side, but she also mentioned really quickly, that if Left-Eye from TLC refuses to let it be released, she'll either take Left-Eye's vocals off, or replace it with 'If That Were Me'.

Police Foil Plot to Kidnap Posh Spice's Baby

LONDON (Reuters) - British police foiled a plot to kidnap Brooklyn, the 10-month-old son of Victoria ``Posh Spice'' Adams and England soccer star David Beckham for a 1 million pound ($1.64 million) ransom, newspapers reported on Sunday. ``A squad was set up to deal with the threat after a known criminal had been boasting of the plot,'' the Sunday Mirror tabloid quoted a police source as saying. ``Information gathered suggested that the kidnappers planned to hold Brooklyn and possibly Victoria for ransom.'' The Sunday Times said no arrests were made as the plotters never got beyond the planning stage and left no written evidence. At one point, police were so worried about the potential kidnapping that officers kept watch over the Spice Girl and her baby son while others guarded the three houses owned by Adams and Beckham, the papers said. It was not the first time Brooklyn has been under threat. In December, tabloids reported that Adams knocked a fan to the ground outside a luxury London department store after he lunged at the baby.

Posh Spice in Knickers Slip Over Husband Becks

LONDON (Reuters) - England and Manchester United star David Beckham is used to taunts from soccer crowds -- but his wife Victoria -- Posh Spice of the Spice Girls -- has given them new ammunition by disclosing he likes wearing her knickers. British newspapers pounced on Wednesday on the Spice Girl's comments in an interview with Channel Four's ``Big Breakfast'' program. ``He likes to borrow my knickers,'' she said, but then quickly insisted she was joking. Interviewer Johnny Vaughan pressed her further though: ``I know you're not joking...Is it thongs or big pants?'' ``Thongs,'' she whispered. Ignoring other possible aspects of the story, The Times fashion editor commented: ``I just don't understand physically how he can fit into her G-strings.'' Beckham is currently in Rio de Janeiro where Manchester United are due to play in soccer's inaugural World Club Championships. Posh Spice, formerly Victoria Adams, rose to fame with the all-girl group who became Britain's pop music sensations of the 1990s.

MEL G FLEES FOR THE EAST

Scary Spice Mel G has flown to the Thai resort of Phuket for a break following the collapse of her marriage to dancer Jimmy Gulzar. The singer left London late on Monday night with her actress sister Danielle and 10-month-old daughter Phoenix Chi, after spending much of the day being comforted by her parents in Yorkshire. A spokeswoman for the Spice Girls star said she had flown out to gain some space and to take a short break. "She just wanted to get out of the country for a few days," she said. Mel G arrives in Singapore en route to Thailand with Phoenix Chi Mel G and PhoenixThe 24-year-old is said to have stormed out of the mansion she shared with Gulzar in Little Marlow, Buckinghamshire after a row on New Year's Day. The couple had decided to make a last-ditch attempt to save their stormy marriage during a family Christmas at their home. But the festivities were marred by a series of rows, and they announced their split on Sunday. The spokeswoman said the couple had planned to spend Christmas in Thailand together to try to iron out their marriage problems. "They've tried very, very hard over the last couple of months, and Jimmy was there over the whole Spice tour. "They were originally going to go over to Thailand to get away from it all, because they've had a pretty hectic year, but they decided not to in the end." Gulzar was seen leaving the couple's mansion briefly on Monday night. He cycled to the local pub, the King's Head, returning with 60 cigarettes and some beer. He gave six cans to reporters saying: "You've got some beer, what more do you want?" On his bike: Jimmy Gulzar cycles for cigarettes and beer Meanwhile, Mel G's marriage split is providing food for thought for the UK's tabloids - with the spokeswoman denying reports in The Sun claiming actor Max Beesley has been "a shoulder for her to cry on". The Mirror claims Jimmy Gulzar has been offered £1m to "get out of her life", adding he wants more money - the singer is worth around £20m. The Daily Mail reports Mel G is determined to win custody of Phoenix Chi, although Gulzar has demanded he wants to look after their daughter while she tours the world with the Spice Girls later this year. But the spokeswoman said: "I don't think things have got to that detailed stage at the moment. "They weren't expecting anything like this to come out for a couple more weeks, so they haven't had a chance to discuss things like that."
