 To whom it may concern:
If I can help you understand te state of Hanson and their music, I will do my best.
Most radio stations that have played Hanson's music in the past are not playing it now because the target demographic of a radio station is 18-34 year old females, with an emphasis on 25-34 years olds. What this means is that when the stations have to sell advertising time, ad agencies want to know how the station did in the ratings in those demographics. If they do well, they get bought by the agencies. If they don't, they lose dollars. Now remember, radio IS a business, just like McDonalds, etc. We cannot operate a radio station without revenue. Now how do we get those desirable demos, we program to them. How do we do that efficiently? We spend thousands of dollars every year nasking them what they want to hear and what they like through callout research.
You see, only 5% of a station's audience calls in to make requests, play contests, comes to station events, buys music, goes to concerts, etc. So, how do you find out what the other 95% wants, likes, etc.? You use callout research. tehre are companies that specialize in radio station callout research. I will tell you from professional experience, women over the age of 20, for the most part, do not care about or want to hear Hanson. They think of them as a teeny bopper band. Not so with Backstreet Boys, 'NSYNC, 98 Degrees. These guys have songs that test through the roof in callout research, plus they get requested and sell consistently.
From personal experience, I have an autographed CD of Hanson that I tried to sell on Yahoo! and E-Bay. No takers. Twice!!! But lots of offers on the autographed 'NSYNC CD I had. That's just another experience to point out. I think we all , as radio programmers, believe Hanson is talented, but they don't relate to the demographics that we need to sustain an existence in the competitive radio world.
I hope this helps! And, don't try to shoot me down with what I do know, as I know there are many programmers who will not even answer your emails as they don't feel they need to take the time to do so. I have extended a courtesy that many won't.
