Thanks to all the souls that toil day and night being 110% purely creative. Open Source changed my life from the first time I was curious enough to run a Live CD, and learn the hard way how difficult it can be to love linux.
Microsoft's DOS is probably the only software I ever loved -- too bad it never had native multitasking/multiuser -- and where it failed I looked to compiling Minix for a 286 system on which I learned most of what I know about computers.
Thanks to all the H4XXor5 that posted their code on BBS and shared their software either as shareware or freeware for this helped me learn a lot about programming in different languages.
Right now I am in love with Ubuntu. This distro is well built with only the stuff that 80 percent of the users, whether or not they are migrating away from another OS, might look for in a new system. Ubuntu is by far my favorite because everything I've tested works right out the box. Knoppix is right up there with Ubuntu and is exceptional when it comes to compatibility. Knoppix however takes a little work to get it to look really awsome -- customized looks that are not really hard to acheive given the number of desktops available and free themes and stuff. Mandriva is pretty good although you don't have all some drivers that you might need from a fresh install. Slackware needs a great deal of tinkering to get things to work like other distros and OSes.
Its quite common for u'r Windows system to get knurled into an unmanageable mess. Rescue u'r data with a knoppix live CD. You will need to know how to use the folowing software:
dd - helps you make a backup image of the media you intend to work on, hopefully not a hard media error.
mount - allows you to mount a variety of media, and you need to know the different kinds of file system types.
fsck - is the norton disk doctor of Linux, and with the right modules can repair even an NTFS system.
cp - if you prefer to copy individual files or folders.
mv - is the equivalent of Dos copy command.
cfdisk - the easiest partitioning program I have used.
