HPS-4000® or better known as (HIGH PERFORMANCE STEREO) began in 1979 with the first installation occurring in 1980. Up to that time, no theater sound system offered a nine octave response. HPS® was the first to develop a wide range stereo playback system for modern cinemas.

HPS was also the first to develop reliable formulas for the exact placement of the all important surround speakers. These proprietary formulas work because they relate radiating patterns of the surround speakers themselves to the actual shape of the individual theater. Known as the ALLEN SURROUND ARRAY, this is something the HPS has become quite proud of. Unheard of coverage uniformity of plus-minus 1/2 DB within the surround area is typical. No single speaker localization is noticed, even by those sitting underneath a surround speaker. No other motion picture system offers this level of performance.

The sound quality of the ALLEN SURROUND ARRAY matches the sound from the screen. This again is exclusive with the HPS-4000 installations.

The competition has indeed publicly stated that they tried and failed to achieve timbre matching between the screen and surround channels--HPS did it over 30 years ago.

HPS was also the first to computerize theater sound system designs, the first to export modern theater playback systems over seas, first to offer 4-way stage loudspeakers and first to install motion picture sound systems with all the dynamic range required for digital stereo.

HPS was also privileged to be the first to demonstrate digital stereo in a commercial movie theater in 1984. This was followed with two highly successful, first ever stereo motion picture feature presentations for the public in 1985.

HPS is the first company to provide this industry with loudspeakers designed to be placed with the beamwidth correction required to overcome the coverage distortions and behind the screen reflections cause by the screen itself. This major break through assures exhibitors that the speakers used in the HPS-4000 theaters are genuine theater speakers, rather than simple public address systems being marketed to cinemas.

The way HPS-4000 designs begins are simple: Plans or dimensions for each theater are provided. In return, the founder and inventor (John F. Allen) supplies the sound system designs, racks layouts, AC power requirements and precise speaker locations. HPS supplies the speakers. Other sound equipment is also available if desired. The installer sees to it that each system is installed according to the designs and specifications. When the installations are complete, John F. Allen personally visits the theater and performs the final tuning and voicing. At this time, the exhibitor has permission to use the HPS-4000 logo's for advertising. This permission continues without fee as long as the systems are properly maintained. If a system is altered, or the tuning is changed in any way, permission to use the HPS-4000 name, logo or trailers is immediately suspended, as their continued use under these conditions would be considered a violation of the trademark.

HPS dealers and customers are responsible for assuring the HPS-4000 sound systems are properly maintained and not tampered with.

The HPS-4000 sound systems are four to eight times as powerful than other system you are likely to encounter in a movie theater. They are known for their natural sound quality, effortless clarity and unequaled dynamic range.

The THX sound system allows audiences to hear film soundtracks exactly as the film maker intended-crisp,clear,and dynamic. THX was developed by lucasfilm Ltd, the awardwinning leader in motion picture sound and special effects.
