Alfred Schiller, formerly of Levering, passed away Tuesday evening at Hines Veterans Hospital near Chicago, where he had been a patient for about 30 years. Mr. Schiller was born in Cross Village June 12, 1920, the son of Arthur and Esther Schiller.
He is survived by several cousins.
Friends may call at the Nordman Funeral Home from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday evening, and funeral services will be held Saturday at the Nordman Funeral Home at 10 a.m. with Rev. Nelson Duncan officiating. Burial will be in Carp Lake Township Cemetery in Carp Lake.

Matilda started school in Keego Harbor in the first grade at the age of 7. She graduated from Pontiac High School in 1940. After graduation she worked at the Cranbrook School in 1942. After her father hurt his foot and couldn't work for a time, she went to work at Yellow Truck and Coach to help feed the family. She worked there for 6 years. While she was working at Truck and Coach she stayed with a friend, Anne Jewels, there she met Anne's Brother, Glen Norton. They were Married and lived in AuGres for a while before building a house in Twining, Michigan.

As the eldest child in large family Matilda had many chores; she looked after the younger children, did dishes and cleaned up the kitchen after meals.
Growing up they had a wood stove for cooking. Clothing was washed on a washboard until John C. received his bonus money from the Army, which he used to purchase a gasoline powered washer. Coal was used for heat in the winter.
Grandpa Schiller (Christian) mailed a Christmas Tree to them every christmas, until he died. After that Matilda Jane had someone cut a tree for them. The tree was decorated with ornaments and popcorn strings. The last tree that was mailed to them was quite small so it was put on the table. There was barely enough money for gifts, they had a toy, an orange and some candy on a plate on the table. This was the poorest christmas the West kids ever had. They lived on Howard Street in Pontiac at that time.
Matilda was Baptised at the Pontiac First Baptist Church at the age of 13. At the time they lived at 103 Howard Street in Pontiac.

She Won the Detriot Free Press Spelling Bee.

Tilly moved to Twining Michigan in 1948. The town was a bit different back then. There was a small Grocery store about 1/2 the size of the current one and there was a house on the remaining property that is now part of the store.
There were 2 bars, as there is now, 2 gas stations, Ernie Baums shell station and Curristons gas station across the street. Cards farm implements was there back then as it is now and there was a resteraunt where the apartments on Main Street are located.
There was a large Grocery, Clothing and "everything" store (The Jew Store) and a barber shop where Arnold's Hardware used to be. The old school was a two story building and the Baptist Church was a cement block building with 2 rooms. There was a two story house where the Fire Hall is and there was an old house (the Twining House) next to the bar.
Before she moved there, the Eddy house was the last house on the block (416 West Main Street). Then they (Matilda and Glen Norton) built the house at 430 West Main Street.

He was with the 3rd division during World War II, wounded twice, the second time at Anzio Beachhead. 2nd wound was a back injury, serious enough to be sent home. He was honorably discharged in October of 1944. He was later employed by Consumers Power Company, Max Curtis Ford in East Lansing, and Lansing Community College.

Obituary of Arthur Clyde West;
Arthur Clyde West, age 67, of Decker, Michigan, passed away Oct. 4, 1997 in Sandusky, Michigan after a long battle with Pancreatic Cancer. He was a resident of the Sanilac County Medical Facility for the past several months. Family visitation will be at Marsh's Funeral Home in Marlette, Mich. Funeral will be at 11:00 A.M.Tues. Oct. 7, 1997 at Lamotte Township Hall on Snover Rd.., in Decker, Mich. Internment will be at Hemans Cemetery and a luncheon will be provided after the grave side service at the Township Hall. Family visitation will be from 5 to 9 this evening.
Mr. West was born Dec. 3, 1929 in Commerce, Michigan. He grew up around Pontiac Lake, Michigan. He had a paper route as a boy with the Pontiac Press and delivered papers to earn money to help his family. He learned to do mechanical work on cars and worked at Marion Masters' service station on M-59. He later went to work for Pontiac Motor Div.. Of General Motors in 1949. In 1951 he went into the Army and served 16 months in Germany, was honorably discharged in march of 1953. He returned to Pontiac, Mich., and to Pontiac Motors, to resume his career. He lived in Walled Lake, Mich., and worked on the Commerce Township Fire Dept., as a volunteer fireman for 15 years. He worked at the Walled Lake Amusement Park in 1958 in the Dart throwing booth, while laid off from G.M. In 1970 he bought a farm in Decker Michigan (Lamotte twp) to be away from the city and raise beef cattle. Art continued his career with General Motors commuting to Pontiac, Mich. Each day. While living in Decker, Art helped Lamotte Township organize it's own Fire Dept. Up to this point, Lamotte twp, relied on other departments further away from Marlette to provide fire protection services. Art West was also elected the Fire Chief of Lamotte's new Fire Dept. He was instrumental in obtaining property for a Fire Department / Township hall in Decker, Michigan. He served as chief for a number of years and retired from public life in 1985.
Art West is survived by his companion of many years, Barbara Atkins, of Sandusky, Mich., his son and daughter-in-law, Henry Lawrence and Cheryl Lynne West, of Kansas City, Missouri, his daughter and son-in-law Marilyn Kay and Dennis Henry King, of Decker, Michigan, his son and daughter-in-law James Arthur and Linda West, of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Arthur West also has ten grandchildren, Lawrence Clyde West, and his wife Genevieve, Dennis Henry King Jr., and his wife Ann, Christopher Michael Allen West, and his wife Sarah, Benjamin Arthur King, Brian Joseph West, Jason Joseph King, David James West (deceased), Carrie Margaret Elizabeth King, Heather Jeanette West and Kyle West. Mr. West also has three great-grandchildren, Alexander Nicholas King, Brittany Morgan West, and Nathaniel Lawrence West. Art is also survived by nine brothers and sisters, Matilda May Hollister (Tilly) of Twinning, Mich., Ed and Mary West, of Lansing, Mich., Alvin and Norma Jean West, of White Lake, Mich., William (Bill) and Clara West, of Pontiac, Mich., Robert (Bob) and Ruth West, of Marion, Indiana, Ethel John, of Rockford, Mich., Edna Yale of Twinning, Mich., Fred and Maxine West of Eaton Rapids, Mich., and Della Thompson of Levering, Mich.
