i went hunting this weekend.
i took a notebook with me.
i wrote a story.
this story is purely fictional. all the characters and events in this story are made up. and any resemblance to characters and events in reality is purely coincidental. had this been an actual story, it would have ended a lot differently. enjoy.
they had spent the better part of the day together. they saw each other several times at work that day, and spent the times that they werent together thinking of one another.
later, during the party, he had to sit at the other end of the table, away from her. he watched her as a man nearly twice her age tried desperately to flirt with her. he noticed her every movement, from the way that she laughed politely at his jokes to the way that she attempted to ignore him by talking to others around her. he noticed.
he thought to himself about how beautiful she really was. and he knew that even though she was being hit on by a man with a daughter old enough to be her friend, that she was his. or at least mostly his anyway.
he tried to walk with her as they left the party, but the older man was relentless in his attempts to talk to her. he could only laugh at the older man, knowing that he didnt have a chance with her. then, he thought about how bad it would be if he himself were old and alone. he knew that he didnt have to worry about that, he had her.
when he got back to the office, he called her on her cell phone. he anticipated hearing her sweet voice as the phone rang. she finally answered and put him on hold. she was talking to her mother. after getting disconnected and doubting modern technology, he called her back. he was trying to confirm their plans for the evening, and he just liked the sound of her voice. as they were talking, he couldnt resist the urge to make jokes about the older man.
he was a funny guy, and she liked that about him. he hung up the phone smiling, as did she.
he knew that he was going to get to see her again soon, and that made him happy. he also knew that she was going to love what he had gotten for her.
when he arrived, they were eating, and she invited him into the kitchen. this was only the third time that he had seen her son, and the first time that he actually got to spend any time with him.
he and the boy made an instant bond, as he did with most kids. he didnt know what it was about himself that made kids love him they way that they did. perhaps it was the fact that he actually listened to them. or maybe it was because he was still just a big kid at heart. or it could be that they just looked at him as a big, tall walking jungle gym. either way, the fact remained that he hadnt met a child yet that he didnt like. or that didnt like him.
though she could hardly believe it, her son was no exception. she had warned him ahead of time that he doesnt like new people at all. she had told him not to try to pick him up because he would scream. she said that he doesnt even like some of her relatives, but he did like him. and he felt the same way about the little guy.
within about an hour of him being there, the little boy was crawling all over him and asking him to pick him up. it was almost as if he was his dad, or had known him his whole life. they played together and watched scoobie doo together and had an all around good time. he watched over him as if he was his own son, and in some ways, he wished that he was.
he fell in love that night with a 14-month old boy, who grabbed his heart and wouldnt let it go. he wanted to raise him, and teach him how to be a man. he wanted to teach him about life and how to throw a baseball. he wanted to be there for him the first time that he fell in love, and the first time that he got his heart broken. he wanted to be his father.
he also watched her with him. he saw how great of a mother that she truly was. he saw an indescribable bond between the two of them. he saw the unbreakable love that they have for one another. and he was jealous because he knew that she could never love him as much as she loved her son.
he fell in love with the idea of having a son. he fell in love with the idea of being a daddy. he fell in love with the idea of having her as his partner. he fell in love with the whole idea of having a family. he wanted her and her son to be his family.
that night he decided to try. he decided that it wouldnt be so bad after all. he decided that this was what he wanted. he just didnt know how to tell her after all this time. he wondered how she would react when he did tell her.
she gave him his gift. it was something that he had mentioned only once that he had wanted. it was something that he was going to buy for himself, but decided to wait. somehow she knew that it was exactly what he wanted.
he gave the boy the little scoobie doo that he had bought for him. the boy found the gift bag and tissue paper more fun to play with than the actual toy itself. he did say 'thank you', for the toy in his 14-month old voice.
he didnt think that the boy could ever get any cuter than he was at that very moment.
then he pulled out the small box that contained her gift. it wasnt much, but it was something that he wanted her to have. it was something that when he saw it, he thought that the designer had created it just for her. he knew the instant that he laid eyes on it that it was what he wanted for her.
her eyes widened as she opened the small box that he handed her. she pulled it out of the box and looked it over in amazement. she thought it was the most beautiful thing that she had ever seen. she put it on and vowed never to take it off.
she thought about how beautiful if was, and about how much it must have cost him. then she felt bad for not spending near the same amount on him. she wanted to hug him and never let go. she wanted to be with him forever.
she started to say something about the how much it must have cost, but he wouldnt let her. he told her to just say thank you. and she did.
she did hug him, and she eventually let him go. she touched his face and kissed him on the cheek. he smiled at her, and knew that he was in love.
it was getting late, and it was time for the boy to go to bed. he helped her as best as he could. he picked up all the toys that the boy had been playing with while she gave him his bath. he played with the boy and distracted his attention as she put his drops in his ears. then he sat on the couch and listened as she tucked him into bed. he listened to her sing to him until he fell asleep, and this made him want her even more.
after putting him to sleep, she walked back into the living room, where he was waiting on her. finding it unnecessary to complicate things with words, she curled up next to him on the couch. she wrapped both arms tightly around his and leaned her head over onto him.
he sat there, and watched t.v. as she fell asleep on his shoulder.he sat there, and watched t.v. as she fell asleep on his shoulder.
some random other stuff from the weekend.
i went to watch josh's band, glimpse practice on friday night. they are really good. they need a little work on perfecting the songs before they play them live, but i think other than that they are pretty solid. and i can say that i knew them when...
after that, i went bowling with vance. its been a long time since i had been bowling, and those muscles arent built up like they used to be. i was sore the next day. he won the first game, and i *ahem* doubled his score in the second game.
i still havent talked to jennifer. i tried to call her several times on friday, and no one answered. i even called the studio and she wasnt there. they told me that she doesnt normally work on fridays. i was gone all day on saturday and sunday, so i didnt have a chance to call her. im going to keep trying though.
i got an email yesterday from sondra. she found the journal and was writing to tell me that i was encouraging to her because i wasnt afraid to say that i was a christian.
wow. little ol' me, encouraging? after all the things that have happened lately to make me want to take the journal down, this really helped me in deciding to keep it going.
if my writing encourages just one person, even if that person is myself, then it makes it all worth it. and apparantly its encouraging at least two people.
