Mystery Sarah McKee Stambaugh d. 4 Jan 1896 Fulton, Callaway Co., PA m. John George Snyder b. 9 May 1831 Juniata Co., PA d. 12 Sept 1894 Callaway Co., PA According to family notes she was a daughter of Phillip & Anna Marie (Simon) Stambaugh, and a sister to Alexander Stambaugh. However, her birthdate does not fit the Sarah who is Phillip's daughter. Sarah McKee's birthdate is verified by her tombstone and other documents. From studying Helen Stambaugh's book, I found two possible fathers of Sarah McKee. One is John Stambaugh (b 28 Jan 1804). He married a Nancy McKee, and this would account for my Sarah's middle name. The problem is that he has no daughter listed named Sarah. Another possibility is that Sarah McKee is the daughter of Jacob Stambaugh (b 1797) who married a Mary Neidig. He does have a daughter named Sarah, and no further information on her. The time frame is better also. New information provides circumstancial evidence that points to Jacob as the father of Sarah m. John George Snyder. Family photos list Sabina (Sevina sic) Stambaugh Ersman (Arsman sic) as "aunt", and Arsman/Ersman children as "cousins" If the captions were written by Sarah herself, then she would have to be a child of a brother of Sabina/Sevina, and this doesn't fit with the time frame. If Sarah was descended from another son of Phillip, these people would all be cousins, including Sabina. However, if the captions were placed there by one of Sarah's chldren, then this would make it plausible for our Sarah Stambaugh b. 1827, to be the daughter of Jacob 1797 & Mary Neidig. (Note: Sarah's birth/death dates are taken from old family notes. Her tombstone, in the Twin Churches (Methodist Episcopal Churches) Cemetery located at Mt. Carmel, Missouri, South HIghway 54, reads: Snyder, Sarah, Wife of J. G. Snyder, died Jan. 4, 1896, Aged 68 years.) One of the pictures is of a Mary E. Seager. So far, I haven't found the Seager family, but note that one of Jacob 1797's daughters married a Seager. There is also a David Peck that married Clara Stambaugh. Could this be Clarissa? A photo shows "Uncle Dave Peck", and there's a letter from Clara Peck in PA to family in MO. The family also has said that Sarah McKee was married before she married John George Snyder. Her first husband is given either as Louis Terry, or a Vaughn. She is said to have had a son named Terry Vaughn. I can find no record of this, although another family member does have some old photographs of Terrys and Vaughns. These have notations penciled in (grandma, grandpa, uncle, etc.). New information from a widow's pension application by Sarah Stambaugh Snyder refutes this idea. Both Sarah and her uncle, Alexander Stambaugh state that Sarah and John George had neither been married before. If anyone has any information, please contact me Barbara R.
This information from: 1. Family notes The information on the Stambaugh line came from old family members. My mother sent out sheets of biographical information and they corrected and sent them back. One of the informants was Mr. Harry McKinley Stambaugh, who sent the notes to another family member. Alexander Stambaugh migrated to Missouri in about 1866 or 1867, by covered wagon. His brothers and sisters stopped off in Iowa and Kentucky, some going to Kansas. 2. "Stambaugh 1686-1986" Helen Stambaugh 1986 3. New information from pictures belonging to Mrs. R. Dixon, Fulton, Mo. 4. Additional information on siblings from Joyce W.
