The WANDERER 1861

Wanderer, brig, Beyond the fact she became a total wreck at Riverton, it has been impossible to obtain details of the loss of the brig. In a letter to the editor of the Southland News and Foveaux Strait Herald of April 20, 1861, a Riverton correspondent, writing about the want of moorings in the roadstead, states; “Till lately, no casualty has occurred but the stranding of the brig Wanderer a few months ago.” An article on early Riverton dealing with illicit rum running, mentioned, “that ships had a habit of coming to stay as when the brig Wanderer gently eased up on the beach and settled to rest. As the captain pointed out, she had 24 years of service and was entitled to a pensioned old age”.
