The "ONWARD" 1863

Onward, cutter; When leaving Toetoes Bay, Southland, on June 19, 1863, the cutter was totally wrecked on the bar. The wind was fair, but the Onward struck on the bar in mid channel, and immediately filled. The crew were saved, after being in the rigging for two hours. Their rescue was effected by floating ashore the running rigging attached to an oar, and after an end had been secured by a man on the shore, they drew themselves to safety. The cutter was loaded with wool and sundries, and practically all of her cargo was lost. The casualty was attributed to the bar and entrance having being completely altered, due to recent gales and lack of fresh in the river.

The Onward was owned by Mr J.G.Hughes of Campbelltown (Bluff) and commanded by Captain W. Shepherd.
