The NORTH STAR 1859

North Star, brig: During a heavy south-westerly gale which raged at New River (Invercargill) on the night of February 8, 1859, the brig was stranded in the vacinity of the Maori pa. Examination the following day disclosed that the vessel was so badly damaged as to render her useless except as a hulk, even supposing that attempts to refloat her were successful . The North Star, which became a total loss, is believed to be identical with the vessel of that name, No. 32,017, of 121 tons, and registered at Hobart.
