The LUNAR 1843

Lunar, brig: About the beginning of November 1843, the brig was totally wrecked at Waipapa Point, near Bluff. The vessel was on a voyage from Melbourne to Otago with a special cargo when stranded. The Lunar was refloated, but a strong gale again drove her ashore on a sandspit, where she became a total loss. The crew and the cargo were saved. The captain of the Lunar returned to Port Nicholson on February 26, 1844 and reported that cargo to the value of 1,500 pound had been saved, and the wreck was sold for 60 pound.

The Lunar was a brig of 165 tons and had been trading in the New Zealand coast since 1837. When she sailed from Port Nocholson to Akaroa on October 7, 1843, she was under the command of Captain Barker, who is believed to be in command when the Lunar was wrecked.
