The “HELEN AND JANE” 1879, Schooner

Drifted ashore on Mussel Beach, Te Waewae Bay, Foveaux Strait, on November 12, 1879, and became a total wreck. The casualty was caused through the missing stays in consequence of a heavy ground swell.

The Helen and Jane, No. 79,505, was a schooner of 60 tons register, built by Williamstown, Victoria, in 1878, and her dimensions were, length 78 ft, beam 17.8 ft, depth 7 ft. She was under the command of Captain G. Sumpter
