The EDITH REID 1883

Edith Reid, ketch: When heading out of the New River Heads on August 12, 1883, the ketch missed stays and went on to the rocks opposite the pilot station, where she became a total wreck. In company with the ketch Prince Rupert the Edith Reid left the New River in the morning, the master of each vessel being anxious to make the quicker run to Bluff. The New River pilot signalled to the vessels not to take the bar, but no notice was taken of the signal.

The Edith Reid, No. 57,550, was a ketch of 71 tons register, built at Shipwright Point, Huon River, Tasmania, in 1874, and her dimensions were; length 83.6ft, beam 21.8ft, depth 6.9ft. She was owned by Mr D, McLeod, of Invercargill, and commanded by Captain Svend Bergenson. The ketch was insured for 500 pound, about half her value. She had been unfortunate for some time previous to her loss, meeting with a succession of accidents which necessitated a heavy outlay for repairs
