The

Aparima, ketch; went ashore in calm weather about 500 yards west of the mouth of the Mataura River, when leaving Toetoes Bay on October 25, 1871. The wind falling light, the sea drove her on the beach, where she became a total wreck. The Court of Inquiry found that there was no blame attached to the master, Captain E, Kerns, the loss resulting from circumstances altogether beyond the control of the parties concerned.

The Aparima, No. 52,342, was a schooner of 30 tons register, built at Riverton, Southland, in 1865, and her dimensions were; length 62ft, beam 15.3ft, depth 4.7ft. On May 3, 1869, the Aparima was wrecked at Kakanui, North Otago, but was recovered, lengthened and registered anew.
