Supply List
The following is a list of supplies that I would advise taking to Pohnpei if you are a Student Missionary. If you are just a tourist, some may still be valuable.
- Bible
- School/Church Clothes (same thing). Ladies, bring below-the-knee dresses, with sleeves. Guys, bring slacks and collared shirts (cotton is the coolest), also bring a tie to wear when youare on the platform at church.
- Jeans, 1 pair and sweat shirt. Slacks are cooler but jeans are nice when it gets cold (70).
- Shorts, these are worn everywhere except at school.
- T-shirts
- Light long-sleeved shirt, it will keep the sun off while on the boat and the bugs off whensleeping at the outer islands.
- Sandals (Teva type)
- Shoes to hike in (these will get very muddy).
- Socks, zorries (thongs) will be worn most of the time so don't bring many pairs.
- Cheap thongs for guys over size 11(everyone else can buy them there).
- Antibacterial soap and shampoo
- Other personal hygiene items (available on Pohnpei, but the selection is limited and they costtwice as much).
- Contact supplies (if worn)
- Vitamins
- Sun screen and Aloe Vera

- Sunglasses and cap and/or wide-brimmed hat

- Umbrella (very sturdy), rain pants and rain coat, or poncho.
- First-aid kit, containing anti-fungal cream, Band-Aids, and other medicine for cuts, colds, flu,and diarrhea.
- Disposable underwater camera

- Zip-lock bags, you will store everything in them so get both large and small sizes.
- Guitar (there is a limited supply of band instruments on Pohnpei)
- Reading lamp (optional)
- Mosquito repellant (doesn't work well but it makes you feel better)
School Supplies:
- Bulletin board materials
- Ideas for youth programs
- Stickers, prizes for children
- Stories (books/tapes)
- Classroom pictures
- Any books, color books, visuals and learning aids
- Worships ideas and materials
- Skits and plays, music
- Videos
- Pens and Pencils with designs
Please note, the school has all necessary supplies, it is not necessary to bring anything. However, if you find something that you really like, or think would be really useful, bring it.
Optional:
- Bike: a mountain bike works best, and you can trade it at the end of the year for some greatwood carvings.
- Rollerblades: some of the roads are okay, and the gym is fun.
- Books: although there are some used book stores, there is a limited selection.
- Radio and tapes
- Games (you can get a free deck of cards if you ask for them on the plane).
Don't Bring:
- Stamps, U.S. stamps will not work. You must use F.S.M. stamps.
- Clothes iron, humidity is high enough to keep most things wrinkle free.
- Anything that is incredibly valuable to you, it will either rust, be stolen, or mold. At the endof the year you can trade almost anything for excellent carvings from the locals.
- Leather things, they will get moldy, especially in places without air conditioning.
Additional Information:
- Everything on these lists can be purchased in Pohnpei, however, the selection is limited and prices are very high.
- A light blanket and pillow can be obtained from the airlines if you ask them.
- You will not be able to take everything that you want with you on the airplane. Ship it 2 - 3weeks ahead of you. Do NOT ship it ground. It will go by boat and take close to 6 months. Ship everything by Airmail.
- Free shipping can found by Fedex-ing with guarenteed 2nd day mail. When the packagearrives, you need to get refunded. This only works going to Pohnpei. The Fedex office inPohnpei has wised up to the fact that mail takes 7-11 days. (I have not tried this but others have had great success)
- Access to e-mail is done through Telecom, the local telecommunications server.
- 5 gallon buckets are excelent to pack into for trips to outer islands. They provide watertight containers that also double as stools.
