The Offspring
Ixnay On The Hombre
Columbia Records

The Offspring's major label debut opens with a "disclaimer" (delivered by punk kingpin Jello Biafra) warning of heavy sarcasm to follow. Sure enough, the pop-tinged, hard-core melee that ensues is strewn with the same flagrant facetiousness that gave Smash its bite, plus enough quirky musical elements to keep the album interesting. "Cool to Hate" seethes with snotty vitriol, and in "Me and My Old Lady," a Middle-Eastern twist winds through the pummeling as Dexter Holland wails the words with a Perry Farrell-esque flair. Studio wizard Dave Jerden gives the album a sharper sonic edge, but it's the attitude problem that prevails--for better or for worse.
