Media round-up 4 November 2001 Balkh radio still heard by BBC Monitoring Radio Voice of Shari'ah of Balkh Province - the Taleban-controlled provincial radio station based in the northern city of Mazar-e Sharif - continues to be observed on 1584 kHz. Afghan Taleban Radio Voice of Shari'ah broadcasting from Balkh was observed signing on as normal at 1230 gmt on 4 November 2001 on its usual frequency of 1584 kHz mediumwave. The station had left the air mid-programme during public announcements earlier in the day, at 0356 gmt, ahead of the usual sign-off time of 0430 gmt. Operation was normal on 3 November 2001. The US defence secretary is in Russia and may go to Central Asia. Anti-US feeling round the world is growing and the US pubic is wearying of the cost in lives and money of waging war. The following is the text of the commentary: Most esteemed and respect listeners, peace and the blessing of God be upon you. As every day passes, the jihad front throughout the world is extending against the American aggression on Afghanistan. The rulers of the states of Indonesia, Malaysia and Egypt have strongly condemned the American aggression against the Afghan Muslim nation and have declared that if the American attacks against Afghanistan do not stop (?then) the Islamic world will rise up in full voice against America. On the other hand there is a continuing process of volunteer mojahedin entering Afghanistan even though the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has told them that Emirate is fully capable of withstanding America's aggression. Furthermore, the huge expenditure in America on this war, the deaths of dozens of Americans and the loss of some of their helicopters in Afghanistan have aroused the anger of American people, who no longer want to pay taxes to pay for America's military spending. Now America has succumbed to panic, and has resorted to a hectic round of diplomacy, sending military and political officials to various countries of the world to seek support for America. The US defence secretary is currently in Russia and may travel to Central Asian countries. This panic of the part of America and its commotion make it clear that the American defence secretary has acknowledged failure in Afghanistan and now wants to seek other ways. We take great pleasure in saying that all ways have now been closed for America. America, which with great arrogance and pride rejected consultations with others about nonintervention in Afghanistan, should now shamefully accept its defeat. We have complete faith that, God willing, America will face even greater defeat and disgrace than did Britain and Russia in Afghanistan. Success comes from God. USA/Saudi Arabia/Afghanistan/Middle East: Saudi writer blasts USA's "public relations war" | Text of report by Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadh web site on 3 November headlined "Information networks selling their products in public auction"; subheading inserted editorially The West wants us Arabs and Muslims to operate like a computer that accepts one order at a time. Meanwhile, it gives itself the right to execute several orders at one time. In its war in Afghanistan, the United States has embarked on a dialogue with countries that it used to accuse of terrorism and that are still on the terrorist list. The United States has instructed Israel to start giving sedatives to the Palestinians and Arabs through the idea of establishing a Palestinian state. This idea is acceptable but when and how? What are the borders of this state? What kind of a state is this that is without arms and without an economy? Is it a state with open wounds and on which Israel can continue to inflict wounds as it wills? The United States has asked a public relations employee in its Department of State (the head of a western country) to make a tour of the region in order to sell the idea of this state. Is it a state that will be conceived outside the womb or is it the state of false labour? Every country was born differently. Meanwhile, the United States is asking the Arabs and Muslims to think in one direction only. It wants us to disclose all the assets, accounts, ledgers, secret bank accounts, and lists of all the Muslim organizations and charitable societies. The West is admitting with embarrassment that the source of anthrax is local; in other words, the source of anthrax is the radical factories, laboratories, and groups in the West. The West is doubling its double standards and asking others to take a straight course while it gives Israel total freedom of movement in the Palestinian cities. It is allowing Israel to take unilateral political decisions in the negotiations. This was proclaimed by Sharon as he proceeds to kill the leaders and abduct the activists and opposition elements from the Palestinian villages. Only recently, the United States and the other western countries suddenly found out that the Arab and Muslim youths under the age of 25 years constitute 60 per cent of the Muslim peoples. Only recently, they suddenly discovered that these youths hate the West and are radicalized because they hate the United States. Thus, they are more susceptible to be exploited by the terrorists (Al-Sharq al-Awsat Friday 2 November Page 2). Therefore, the United States decided to embark on a public relations war of a new kind. Comments on proposed Radio Free Afghanistan "The tools used in this public relations war is "Radio Free Afghanistan" and a radio network to the Middle East at a cost of 30m dollars. The United States has earmarked about 400,000 dollars a month to be paid to public relations firms to promote the viewpoint of the US Government in 79 countries that cover, naturally, most of the Muslim countries since there are more than 60 Muslim countries in the world. The United States is planning to establish information centres in Washington, London, and Islamabad that would operate round the clock. The public relations war also includes the lease or purchase of transmission stations in several strategic locations in the region. Negotiations are under way to install stations in countries whose governments do not wish to disclose such agreements openly." (End of quote, same source mentioned above). The issue is not in buying stations or in leasing the organs of the last Soviet war in Afghanistan. The issue is in buying media establishments and public relations staff who are willing to auction themselves. These do not object to moving from the extreme left to the extreme right; they do not object to moving from the opposition party to the "approval" party. Public relations men do not object to leasing their firms to any campaign even it is against their principles and beliefs. Therefore, we expect the neutral media establishments - even those that uphold the ethics of the profession and that believe in honourable stands - to be infiltrated. We expect them to embark on lucrative commercial bids and to auction their stations, correspondents, and newsmen to the highest bidder. The ethics of the profession have been neutralized. This age is the age of public relations and media networks that sell their products in a public auction. I picked up starting at 2230 UT until 0100 a station in Bogotá on 7380. They give an English announcement of their station as IdeaRadio? Has anyone else picked up this station? Thanks, (Bruce, Nov 3, swl@qth.net via DXLD) I had noticed more than one station on 7380 a few nights ago and again UT Sun, probably mixing with VOR Spanish to LAm, so not a good choice for Colombia –-- but unable to read anything here; so rechecked at 1024 during tropical/romantic vocal music in Spanish, and 1028 ID in English did sound like Idea Radio, broadcasting from Colombia to the world on 7380; and gave PO Box, e-mail addresses. Rolled a tape for the following hour while trying vainly to resleep. Results: fading a bit but still audible at 1150 when the tape ran out, with continuous music segués of upbeat tropical music, except for canned IDs in English at approximately 1101 and 1130, Spanish at 1121 and 1144, which I transcribe as verbatim as possible: ``This is Idea Radio, a shortwave station from Colombia to the world. Idea Radio broadcasts on 7,380 kHz. For more info, please contact us: P. O. Box No. 2-5-7-3-3, Bogotá, Colombia, Sudamérica, or e-mail us: idearadio@hotmail.com `` ``Ésta, Idea Radio, estación a transmitir desde Colombia para el mundo. O envíe un e-mail a idearadio@hotmail.com `` This one surely came out of nowhere! I think this is the first Colombian broadcaster ever on the 7 MHz band. In both Spanish and English it does sound like Idea Radio, but not yet 100 porciento certain of the name, and hence address. Will include recording on upcoming WOR 1104 (Glenn Hauser, OK, Nov 4, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** COLOMBIA. 3080.61H, La Voz del Valle (see SWB 1470). This station also with a name but without a QTH. Regarding my ``theories`` our member Tore Larsson/TL, one of the editorial staff of WRTH states this: ``Acc. to further information ``Radio Valle de Pubenza`` has moved to 1600 and is called ``Radio Impacto Cristiano``. But you never know for sure..... Acc. to Rafael Rodríguez ``Radio Sevilla`` is now called ``Caracol Sevilla``. Thank you Tore for your long email. You know that during the voyage to an ID I like to present ``theories``..... (Björn Malm, Quito, Ecuador, SW Bulletin Nov 4, translated by editor Thomas Nilsson for DXLD) ** COLOMBIA/DOMINICAN REPUBLIC/ECUADOR. Re BM´s UNID on 2700.06 (comments by Henrik Klemetz): Malm´s unid on 2700.06 and 2700.1 in no 1470 is certainly Ondas del Yuna first log in 1998 (not 1993). The name of station is difficult to get; I thought at first it sounded like ``Ondas del Sur`` or something other tricking after ``Ondas del...`` That the station faded away earlier than others made me guess at the Dominican Rep. And when I thought of a suitable puzzle piece to put in after ``Ondas del...`` the predecessor of ``La Voz Dominicana`` came to my mind. An illustration of their QSL can be found on the first page of the QSL- list, the one edited by the two Jakobsson, Zet and Nils. I have never heard ``Ondas de la Montaña`` on this frequency, I have also checked this in Medellín. It is not ``rockola`` this station is playing but instead ``bachata``. Both genres are listed, ``bachata`` with its own sound illustration, ``rockola`` with a link to an Ecuadorian page, on my and Jay Novello´s music site. http://home.swipnet.se/gersnaes/henriks/lamusic.html The term ``rockola`` is probably limited to Ecuador, I have in any case never noted it in any other country (Henrik Klemetz) 2700.06(H?) versus 2700.10(H?): A minor comment regarding Henrik Klemetz` contribution in DXLD from Oct 22. I repeat that there are two stations, which mean it is impossible that ``Ondas del Yuna``, Bonao (Dom. Rep.) is on both these frequencies as stated by Henrik (``Malm`s unid on 2700.06 and 2700.1 in DXLD 1-155 surely is Ondas del Yuna, Bonao, Dominincan Republic``). An ``Ondas......``-ID is part of the picture and was noted in the period when I thought it was only one station – so the question is if this ID comes from 2700.06 or 2700.10 kHz? I am at present checking the frequency almost every morning and consider that both of these stations are barely audible above the noise level a few times a month. I am coming back when identification is finished --- in the meantime it is very exciting to take part of different theories from HK and others and not least my own ``wild`` theories..... --- the most exciting with DX is of course the unknown, such as unIDS! 2700.06 kHz: I am getting closer to an ID for this station. The Colombian national anthem, HJ-prefix and UTC -5 strongly indicate (!) towards Colombia. The normal format is music up to around 1030 UT followed by a block of ads for some minutes – then followed by ``Ésta es......HJ..........``. 2700.10 kHz: Sometimes heard alone and sometimes together with 2700.06. Maybe this one is ``Ondas del Yuna``, Bonao (Dom. Rep.)? The very special music heard quite often from this station is without any doubt ``bachata``. I can certify this after visiting HK`s excellent site where music from all over LA can be overheard. I recommend everybody to visit this link: http://home.swipnet.se/gersnaes/henriks/lamusic.html (Ondas del Yuna also confimed on exactly this frequency Oct 28 by Mark Mohrmann in DXLD /ed -TN) I have carefully checked out the fundamental frequency 1350 kHz (900 kHz is of course also possible but listening there is spoiled by Radio Sucre-900.05 kHz, Quito). I can say this: 1349.97 Radio Melodía, Cali (Colombia) often with religious programming. Short ``Melodía``-IDs without ``Radio......`` or for instance ``Melodía, con gusto todo el día``. 1350.00 Radio Reloj, Ibagué (Colombia) mostly with music programs. Only listed as ``Caracol, Ibagué``. 1350.00 La Voz de la Montaña, Medellín (Colombia) with news and music. Great IDs! Acc. to our member Tore Larsson/TL, who is in the editorial staff of WRTH, there is only one listed ``Ondas.....`` in Colombia on 1350 kHz. 1350.01 Tele Radio, Guayaquil (Ecuador) starts up every morning at about 1010 UT with news and music. Jingle: ``La perla del pacífico``. Is not listed so I phoned the telephone number mentioned, 256 56 15. I got to know that the listed ``Radio Reloj`` 4 months ago got a new name and a new owner. They asked if I were interested to take part in the live broadcast which I did and took the opportunity to wish for my favorite tune: Marco António Solís! Then all of those stations can be taken away from the agenda, no one fits for my two harmonics. Finally, ``rockola`` (jukebox) and ``rocolera``-music are Ecuadorian expressions for ``jukebox``-music of any kind, but normally Ecuadorian, national ``the man on the street`` music – good examples of stations here in Quito often broadcasting ``rockola`` are Radio Libertad-1069.96 and Radio Cristal-1379.86 kHz. I presume that ``the man in the street``-music in other countries have different names (Björn Malm, Quito, Ecuador, SW Bulletin Nov 4, translated by editor Thomas Nilsson for DXLD) 2820.04H Radio Centro, Gualaceo (Ecuador). Oct 2001 - 1042 UT. Started up at this time with the national anthem followed by an ID and Ecuadorian music. ``Radio Centro de la selva``. Harmonic from 1410 kHz (2x 1410.02) (Björn Malm, Quito, Ecuador, SW Bulletin Nov 4, translated by editor Thomas Nilsson for DXLD) ** ECUADOR. Re comments on DXPL in DXLD 1-165: I tuned in November 4 at 0400 and found the program beginning on the hour, and it was still in progress when I tuned out around 0426 to check on Radio Ukraine's DX Program. I wonder if this means that there is a long and short version, and which you hear depends on when you listen? Glenn: I have continued to hear these FF NFM signals every morning since 30 OCT, over the range of 25925-25928. There are always many signals all piled up in this range, which makes usable audio very difficult, even though the signal strength is fairly good, since co-channel FM signals will cancel each other out. Every once in a while, I have been able to pick out the FF program. In addition I HAVE also received European illegal CB traffic using SSB mode as well as illegal NFM and also legitimate European 2 way NFM activity all through the 25 MHz range, which does greatly support my belief that these signals are in fact coming from France. Here are some freqs with interesting NFM 2 way traffic from 2 NOV 12- 1300 UT: 26100 NFM, 2 Men speaking EE in odd Irish or Scotch dialect. Also heard 100% Definite Russian 2 way communication on: 25985 NFM, 25975 NFM, 25965 NFM, UNID 2 way East European language on: 25775 NFM 25675 NFM, 25555 NFM, 25635 NFM. I think the Russian signals might be taxi cab dispatches, but I don't know, since I can't understand the language. I considered Africa as a point of origin as did Mr Roberts, but I was able to rule that possibility out due to the large amount of European radio traffic in the 25 MHz range, yet absolutely no African or Caribbean traffic present. The Caribbean does not usually open here in SE USA on 11m till an hour or two after sunrise. I am receiving these signals right at sunrise to 90 minutes after sunrise. The radio was first observed with experimental transmission on 23 December 2000 on 756 kHz mediumwave, at which time it identified itself as "experimental radio from the Mediterranean basin". The radio apparently replaced Voice of the South, a pro-Israeli radio that was run by the South Lebanese Army militia, SLA, from the town of Kfar Killa, southern Lebanon, which had also operated on 756 kHz. The Voice of the South closed on 24 May 2000 when Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon. In January 2001, the Eastern Radio was active only for two hours a day: 0600-0700 and 1500-1600 gmt but the radio is now operating daily from 0700 to 1630 gmt. Programmes heard on 31 October included 15- minute news bulletins at 0800, 1000, 1200 and 1400 gmt and news summaries at 0900, 1100 and 1300 gmt. A political commentary was broadcast at 0905 gmt and repeated at 1600 gmt. The news and comments appeared to have a pro-Israel, anti-Syria and anti-Iraq slant. The radio appeared to criticize Palestinian and Hezbollah "terrorism" and programmes dealt with Arab issues and Lebanese domestic politics. Other programmes contained Arabic songs and modern Arabic music. On November 3, I have found two frequencies that Radio Japan is using via the Abu Dhabi relays, to cover the Middle East and SW Asia (in light of the war in Afghanistan); both are in Japanese: 15495 was noted with a very good signal at 1600 UTC; it signs off at 1700; 9590 was heard as early as 1945, and continues to 2100 (this is the home service N-1 relay). Does anyone have more schedule information concerning the NHK relays or via-Yamata broadcasts to the above regions? The transmissions I have heard are NOT included on the schedule found at the Radio Japan website. 15495 and 9590 are new frequencies for B-01, compared to the frequencies used last month when NHK started using Abu Dhabi after the US bombing campaign began Oct. 7. I have sent an e-mail to NHK concerning the above query (Joe Hanlon in Philadelphia, PA, USA, SWBC, via DXLD) Thanks to the participation in #swl the schedule was posted the first day of operation: http://trsc.com/musings.html#nhkuae (Tom Sundstrom, SWBC via DXLD) Yes, but that was October 10; were there no changes with B-01 from Oct 28? CD of Latin American radio stations 1975-2001 On an afternoon of November 2000, I found myself at a meeting of the Benelux DX Club in the Netherlands sharing some highlights of 31 years of DX-ing to a captive audience. I illustrated my tale with recordings of radio stations. Many audience members asked me whether I would produce a CD with audio files of received radio stations. I embraced the suggestion wholeheartedly, but found myself in a awkward predicament. How to make a choice? I decided on radio stations from Latin American countries, as I have a rich collection of recordings from Latin America. Nowadays, many stations are not audible anymore on the tropical bands, at least not at large distances, so hopefully my selection is of interest to many DX-ers. Unfortunately I did not tape all the stations I received and some recordings have been lost. Yet, the result still is an amount of 371 wav-files. The reception quality varies from station to station and represents the quality at the time of reception. The majority of the stations I received in my house in the Netherlands. However, some stations included, I recorded in Mexico (1979), USA (1981), Panama (1986), Guatemala, Honduras and Belize (1989), Curaçao (1983 en 1999) and Aruba (2001). You find these stations in the "On location in" maps. The files can be opened in Mediaplayer or Realplayer; just double click on the filename and the player will open the file. The CD was introduced at the Annual Meeting of the Benelux DX Club in the building of Radio Nederland in Hilversum on November 3rd. The CD Rom can be ordered by sending 30 Dutch Guilders or the equivalent (after january 1st 2002: 15 Euro) for delivery within Europe to Max van Arnhem, Brink 9, 6852EE Huissen, the Netherlands. For delivery outside Europe the price will be 15 US Dollars (including postage). Were there any plans to put the island and Labrador in the same time zone? For the last couple of years (including the 2002 Rand McNally Road Atlas), road atlases have been putting Labrador in the same time zone as Newfoundland. But of course, this isn't true (Steve Mindykowski via Wallace J. McLean via Daniel Say, BC, DXLD) Legislatively, Labrador is in the Nfld time zone, but most of the region has been on Atlantic time for a very long time. Probably at least since the 1940s. And it isn't accurate, before or after, to say "1/2 an hour later in Newfoundland". In the old province called Newfoundland, most of the territory was on Atlantic time. In the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, part of Labrador is still on Newfoundland time. (Local CBC in Goose Bay will often say "8:30 south of Black Tickle"). The language SHOULD be "That's PROGRAM at N:00, N:30 Newfoundland Time." CBC Montreal already does this with "X:00, Y:00 in the Atlantic Time Zone" (which part of eastern Quebec is in.) Since neither the province or Island of Newfoundland are accurately described by saying "N:30 in Newfoundland", it is the TIME ZONE that should be referred to. I tried to get CBC to do this years ago; maybe now they'll finally listen (Wallace J. McLean via Daniel Say, BC, DXLD) Another way to draw the distinxion is to say ``on Newfoundland`` meaning the island only, not the entire province/radio country (gh, DXLD) ** NIGERIA. State law enforcement still looking for Anderson Steve Anderson mugshot: [same as before, somewhat oblate] http://www.somerset-kentucky.com/images/story_pix/andersonmug2.jpg By Carol Coffey There hasn`t been a sign of Steve Anderson since Oct. 16. Law enforcement officials across the state continue to be on the look out for Anderson, who has been described as a militia enthusiast and survivalist. Anderson has been on the run since he riddled a Bell County Deputy Sheriff`s car last month. Buddy Simpson, public relations trooper with the Harlan post of the Kentucky State Police, said he believes that Anderson has ``gone underground.`` Simpson said organizations that Anderson has been affiliated with in the past, like the Ku Klux Klan, have a ``pretty good network`` of people that would give someone like Anderson on the run food and shelter until he moved on again. Simpson said the KSP and the ATF investigation of Anderson remains active and all leads and tips are being investigated. There are, however, other developments on the Anderson front. A website called ``Sheriff`s Posse Comitatus,`` which linked to a number of sites including Anderson`s United Patriot Radio, is being closed. The only link that currently exists on the site is a dedication to Steve Anderson. A notice appears on the website that indicates it will close within the next week and was last updated on Oct. 31. The message on the site is from Pastor August B. Kreis III. He says he is shutting down the site because he is taking a position with the Aryan Nation. ``Within the next week I will be shutting down this website. I want to thank my longtime supporters for all their help over the years,`` Kreis wrote. ``As most of you are already aware of I have worked with Pastor Butler and the Aryan Nations for many years. I was recently asked by Pastor Butler and Pastor Ray Redfeairn to take the position of Aryan Nations Minister of Information & Propaganda.`` Kreis said he is leaving behind the website after more than 10 years to work full-time for the Aryan Nation. After the message, the website has a link which says, ``Steve Anderson, May YHVH protect you my brother.`` The link is to a page called ``Patriot Shootout. Heads Up.`` The site contains stories published in the Commonwealth Journal about the incident in which Anderson shot at the deputy`s vehicle and other stories. It also links to the Commonwealth Journal website. Kreis also sends a message to Anderson at the end of the page. It reads, ``Kindred ...We will all meet again when we are back with our Father ... I ask you Father please watch over and protect and bless Steve as he makes his way in this world doing his duty as one of your children and soldiers ... May the blessings of our Father be upon you my friend and may the Armour of God keep you safe. /abk.`` Meanwhile, Kentucky Militia Commander Charlie Puckett said yesterday that ATF officials had asked him about ``a white powder`` found at Anderson`s residence. Puckett said Anderson wasn`t into ``bioterrorism`` and that the substance was non-toxic. Puckett also reported that Anderson was suffering from a ``heart condition`` and was being treated by a doctor in Winchester, Ky. ``Who knows ... Steve could`ve had a heart attack up in those mountains,`` Puckett said. ``He`s either dead or out of there by now.`` The KSP and the ATF have announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Anderson. On Sunday, Oct. 14, Anderson, 54, from Pulaski County, fired multiple gunshots at a Bell County Deputy Sheriff after fleeing from a traffic stop in Bell County. Anderson`s abandoned vehicle was recovered near Middlesboro. A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of a large amount of ammunition and several pipe bombs. As a result of the search of Anderson`s vehicle and a subsequent search of Anderson`s residence in Pulaski County, federal explosives charges have been filed against Anderson in U.S District Court in the Eastern District of Kentucky. ATF is assisting the Kentucky State Police in the investigation. Anderson is still considered armed and dangerous by law enforcement officials. Deputy Scott Elder, 25, was taking his girlfriend home before his shift began at 8 p.m. on Oct. 14. On the way, Elder stopped Anderson, who another motorist said had been driving erratically and had no lights on U.S. 25E near Middlesboro. During the stop, police said Anderson became angry and eventually pulled an automatic weapon on Elder. Elder yelled to his girlfriend to lie on the floorboard while he ran behind the patrol car. After the shoot-out, police said Anderson drove his truck into the mountains, where cruisers couldn`t follow. Federal, state and local law enforcement officials executed a federal search warrant at Anderson`s home on Elrod-Martin Road. The ATF has not officially released any information about what items were seized from Anderson`s home, but it apparently took officers several hours to clear the scene.
