Subject: Taliban Radio From: hnlute@www.optcamel.com (Howard and Kelly Lute) Newsgroups: rec.radio.shortwave Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 06:22:14 -0700 Radio Sharee`ah A purely Islamic radio station broadcasting from Afghanistan. Transmissions from Radio Sada-e-Sharee`ah (Voice of Sharee`ah) have been changed. The broadcasts in Urdu will be starting at 9:30pm* for a duration of 15 minutes, and the English broadcast starts from 9:45pm* also for a duration of 15 minutes. Radio Voice of Sharee`ah broadcasts on 1107 kHz MW and 7200 kHz SW. Note:- Above times given are according to Pakistan -- Friend, Howard Lute (via John Norfolk, DXLD) If really in Pak time, that would be UT plus 5, so English at 1645 UT. I vaguely recall it used to be about an hour earlier? What is your source of this info??? Of course, we know it`s not really on 7200, but around 7085v (gh, DXLD) ** AFGHANISTAN. V. of Shari`ah, Kabul? I just heard a station on a 7084,3 kHz with programme in Arabic until 1600 UT. No positive ID. 1600 UT language was changed to Farsi related Dari or Pushtu. SINPO 25332 (Silvain Domen, Belgium, DX LISTENING DIGEST) That`s nice, but realistically, what do you bet not a single person in NY or Washington was listening to this, at 4 am local? Abraços, (Valter Aguiar, Brazil, radioescutas via DXLD) ** HUNGARY. Re R. Budapest in DXLD 1-124. Tehran, 0035 UT Sept 15: Today's newscast began with a report that Iran's Friday prayer leader (Ayatollah Kosharie {sp?}) condemned the attacks on New York and Washington and blamed the "Zionist regime" for the "terrorist act". He stated that it was the Zionists who had the most to gain from it. The Ayatollah said that now was the appropriate time to join with the world in a united effort against terrorism. Two Arabs posing as journalists assassinated the Northern Alliance dissident leader in Afghanistan. The Taliban and bin-Laden were blamed for the deaths by a spokesman for the Northern Alliance who said they would not be deterred or defeated. A correspondent in Spain filed a story that said that the pictures of Palestinians celebrating the terrorist attack on the US were "a distorted lie". He said that the photographer that shot those pictures claimed in Spain that he did so after an Iraqi rocket attack on "the Zionist state". The Muslim leader in Pakistan urged the Pakistani president to reject the US request for assistance in attacking Afghanistan. He said that the US had offered no proof that bin-Laden was involved in the terrorist act, which he condemned. A final report was another not so veiled criticism of the US pointing out that with all its superpower weaponry, the US could not prevent the terrorist attack on itself. Commentaries after the news decried "the Zionist state's" use of the terrorist attack on the US as an excuse to attack "innocent Palestinians". A second commentary attempted to make the point that the US had a unique opportunity. If it consulted with the world and cooperated with other nations in the campaign to eradicate terrorism, the world might forgive the US for its past deeds. But if it acted unilaterally, as has been its habit, it will not gain the support it needs to prevail in its effort and will ultimately bring destruction to itself. Monitored on 9022 kHz. – (John A. Figliozzi, swprograms via DXLD) ** ISRAEL. 1900 UT Sept 14: Kol Israel's newscast led with a story describing a phone call by President Bush to Prime Minister Sharon thanking Israel for its support. Reports further into the ten minute newscast emphasized warnings being issued to Washington by "Islamic fundamentalist groups" throughout the Middle East, including Egypt (quoting an imam associated with the Muslim Brotherhood), against attacks on Afghanistan and of the dangerous consequences that would ensue for the US. There were also reports about further attacks by Palestinians in Israel and the territories and instructions by Sharon to Foreign Minister Peres not to meet with Arafat on Sunday as apparently had or was being planned. The report repeated Sharon's description of Arafat comparing him to bin-Laden. Near the end of the newscast, there was also a report about an uproar surrounding a statement made the previous day by a French official saying that the kind of terrorism visited on NY and DC could not be described as being similar to recent attacks experienced by Israel. The French ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry to explain the statement. The newscast was followed by a regular cultural magazine broadcast each Friday. This program closed with a Hebrew prayer read (in English) after a statement by the program's host describing the day of remembrance and prayer taking place in the US. Interesting...listening to VOA News Now (as I have most of the day), I learned that part of the phone call by Bush to Sharon was to encourage Sharon to permit the meeting between Peres and Arafat to take place. Kol Israel did not mention this fact and separated the stories about the phone call and the pending meeting by several minutes Live stream monitored via the Internet http://www.israelradio.org/iri.ram and also broadcast simultaneously on shortwave (John Figliozzi, NY, swprograms via DXLD) 0400 UT Sept 15: First story on tonight's newscast: Reports from Palestinian radio stations that the Israeli Army was moving into Palestinian controlled areas of Ramallah. Further reports on fighting in the Palestinian territories. Sharon instructs Peres not to meet with Arafat because to do so would "hurt Israel". Sharon says Arafat has not done enough to stop the violence. Powell had urged Peres to meet with Arafat. Israeli chief of staff says that in the past year Israel has experienced 7600 terrorist attacks, "an unprecedented number", with 80-95% thwarted by Israeli authorities' actions. Statements that the situation and the world have changed "markedly" in the aftermath of the WTC and Pentagon bombings. (My Observation: It is most apparent that the Israeli government's position toward the Palestinians and Arafat is hardening considerably in the wake of Tuesday's events.) Then, several descriptive stories about the investigation and the situation in the US on the third day after the attack. Several references to war preparations and a story on Powell's efforts to build an international coalition against terrorism. Washington is awaiting Pakistan's response to its request to use Pakistani air space. Monitored on 9435 kHz. (My Note: It appears that the 0400 newscast originates from Kol Israel--the external service--whereas the 2000 newscast originates at one of the domestic networks. The newscast from the external service appears to be much more forthcoming about information, even quoting Palestinian radio about events when apparently information is not available from official Israeli sources. The 2000 newscast from the one of the domestic networks was more intentionally crafted to leave certain impressions, even though factually the information given was accurate. See my earlier posting on this.) (John A. Figliozzi, ibid.) {Note: John meant to say 1900 above instead of 2000, during DST; after Sept 24 the time really is 2000 UT -gh} ** MADAGASCAR. I've been noticing a station on 5010.0 for some weeks, not the usual 5009.5, too weak for details so still an unID to me. But checking around 1900 UT I noticed no signal anymore. Seems logical that this is Malagasy. But what about Vaghjee? Or that snobbish DX-plorer? 73 (Piet Pijpers, Holland, Sept 14, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** MEXICO. Several photos of last August`s 7th Meeting of Mexican DXers in Guanajuato appear at http://members.aol.com/xe1zeh/indexdx.htm Unfortunately, some are blurred, and not all the thumbnails would load, but there are several shots of our old friend Alfonso Montealegre of Radio Nederland, and of Ana Cristina del Razo of XERMX. Those in the group shots are not identified. I`m baffled why so many DX convention pictures are put up on websites with no captions. Are we all supposed to recognize everybody? (Glenn Hauser; tipped by Miguel Ángel Espinosa, FMRE newsletter, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** SOLOMON ISLANDS. Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation on 5020 kHz: Noted the usual sign-off of the SIBC at 1100 UTC today (Saturday) with an invitation to tune in tomorrow followed by the national anthem. Upon completion of the anthem they immediately went into a relay of BBC World Service. I listened until the rising noise floor made conditions impossible at 1120. Since I have seen no mention of this on the DXLD site or on this group, I must assume that this is a recent development - last weekend they signed off as normal. The WRTH lists them as relaying BBC World Service news at 0600. This development is probably due to the terrorists' actions in the US. Perhaps the BBC wants to partially fill the gap left by abandoning the area in July. This development warrants more research (Mark Coady, Sept 15, ODXA via DXLD) I suspect this was at the behest of SIBC, not the BBC (gh, DXLD) ** SOUTH AMERICA. (Pachakuti, Andino Relay Service, EMAIL: arssw@yahoo.com via DXLD) ** TURKEY. Interesting newscast from the Voice of Turkey 2200 UT Sept 14: It began with a review of the events of the day surrounding the aftermath of the terrorist attack on New York and Washington. When the reader (who I believe was Reshide Morali) got to a report on the several arrests and releases that took place during the day on suspicions, she paused and read twice slowly "and then were released", as if she couldn't believe what she was reading. The newscast, in the context of reporting on US requests to Pakistan to use Pakistani airspace, also included information about the nationals of the UK and other European countries leaving Pakistan and British Airways cancelling all flights to Pakistan. There was also a report about a US chargé d'affairs briefing Turkmenistan (which borders Afghanistan on its north) officials about the situation. In a press review after the news, it was reported that a radio station (I'm sorry, I don't recall which one) had issued a commentary praising the way in which Turkey deals with terrorists (i.e.: ruthlessly) and suggesting that this is the course the US must follow if it is to be successful. Monitored on 11845 kHz. – (John A. Figliozzi, swprograms via DXLD) ** U S A. Since VOA News Now is a continuous newscast in many respects, it's a bit more difficult to file a description of the stories and would take an enormous effort to track how stories evolve and change over the course of a day. I have been listening to VOA's coverage off and on for considerable time over the past three days. My impression--especially taking into account the fact that the events being reported took place in the country, and to some extent in the very city, where the service originates--is that this has been a most professional effort. This has been especially apparent today as the effort has turned more toward analysis than descriptions. There have been a rather wide range of perspectives presented. I got a sense that VOA had some trouble keeping up with the story as events unfolded, perhaps owing to the fact that it caused a noticeable strain on available reporting resources which may not be all they should be. Having said that, one must also recognize that a story of this type and magnitude could not have been anticipated. Now that the pace of events has slowed some, VOA seems to be managing better. VOA is probably not alone in this. From time to time, a little "patriotic fervor" does slip in and the prospect and promise of a strong military reaction from the US seems to be reported with a little extra "gusto". However, these moments are brief, quickly passing and infrequent. One more observation...I don't understand the penchant today for news organizations to have to give a major story like this a title, as if it were a program or a movie. The VOA has fallen into this recent habit as well, feeling the need to title its coverage "The Attack on America". Aren't these events compelling enough without a title? (John Figliozzi, swprograms via DXLD) One other thing... I wonder if VOA's plan to add more programming (i.e. music programs) to the News Now format might be delayed because of the terror war on the US? This new programming scheme is supposed to begin later this fall (Joe Hanlon in Philadelphia, ibid.) The revised News Now format may not begin until after January 2002, because of the time required for union/management negotiations. Many job requirements will change as a result of the new format. WPIX Still On Air After WTC Disaster, By Sarah Stanfield New York, NY-When the twin towers of the World Trade Center buckled in on themselves and crashed into the streets of lower Manhattan, with them went most of the city's broadcast transmission facilities as well as several stations' digital transmitters. Michael Gano, the director of Engineering at WPIX-TV (Channel 11), was just getting into work in his uptown office that morning when American Airlines Flight 11 hit the north tower. Since the accident occurred, he has spent his days coordinating his staff and "Getting as much over-the- air coverage as possible" to the New York City area. The Tribune Broadcasting-owned WB Network affiliate had recently begun transmitting a digital signal from the World Trade Center. It has sustained massive damage to both its analog and digital infrastructure. Some of the other broadcasters who also lost millions of dollars worth of equipment in the collapse were WCBS (Channel 2), WNBC (Channel 4), WNYW (Channel 5), and WABC (Channel 7). WPIX lost its NTSC transmitter, its DTV transmitter, and its news relay microwave transmitter in the collapse. Sadly, one of WPIX's staff members, who was working on the 110th floor of one of the towers when it collapsed, is missing. Currently the channel is operating on-air service from a 1-KW portable transmitter on top of the Empire State Building, where CBS also has a backup transmitter. According to Gano, WPIX has been able to reach many households throughout the New York metropolitan area, but there are many that still are not getting any signal from the station. To that end, Gano's office is working furiously to get direct feeds of its material to cable and satellite providers. Gano said he has "...not even began to think of" the amount of money this disaster will cost WPIX. For the time being, he said he and his staff were "...just trying to work on the immediate and long-term solutions [for the disaster] going forward." When asked about whether or not this will set back WPIX in terms of its digital buildout, Gano replied that this disaster would "...set all of New York back in terms of digital." What he meant by this of course, was that so many of the other major broadcasters in the city were transmitting digitally from the World Trade Center. The only two major affiliates not broadcasting a digital signal from the building were WCBS-DT and WNYW-DT, which broadcast from the Empire State Building. WPIX had no backup digital antenna or transmitter. The auxiliary transmitter on top of the Empire State Building is analog only. Additionally, I plan to play only patriotic music during the netcast. I found listening to some of this music helped me deal with my emotions that were building up inside of me since Tuesday. Also, These events affected my family closely. My Niece is a Flight Attendant and was on her way to "Ground Zero" at the time of the incident. She is fine and safe. I will talk to her mother (my sister) about the events of the past few days. It promises to be an emotional and moving conversation. I hope you can join us. Harry Shearer tells me he was wrapping up a vacation in Melbourne, Australia when flights out were suspended. He had aired a pre-taped "best of the past summer" version of Le Show last weekend to cover the week he was to have been away. ("Le Show" is a weekly collection of music and satire which he has produced unsalaried for 18 years for US public radio.) He says he plans get up in the middle of the night to put on a live "weird show" in his words Sunday at 3 AM time fed via ISDN from an unnamed Melbourne studio back to KCRW to air live at 10 AM in the Los Angeles market, that's 1700 GMT. The show will be available via Real Audio, as always, at the http://kcrw.com site, and at the sites of KAZU-FM and WFSU-FM which also clear "Le Show" live. UNITED PATRIOT RADIO: John Sedlacek comments on broadcast of Sep 13 UT. One has to be sickened, if not repelled, by the commentary aired on the night of September 12 on United Patriot Radio. Steve Anderson was almost gloating over the affair with an "I-told-you-so" attitude. Citizens should be ready for a subsistence existence where it may be necessary to slaughter your own livestock. Because (quote) "If we're on patrol and we see a cow, we're gonna eat." Even worse, from a spiritual and ethical standpoint, was a preacher, whose name I don't immediately remember, stating he would only pray for white Christians because, only they according to Scripture, are God's chosen ones. Interspersed "'Praise Yawheh!" was the anti-Jewish vitriol condemning them as "the devil's seed" whose hand could be seen in this affair. And God help you if you were a Moslem, an Oriental or black Christian. Nothing but hateful and vengeful diatribe "based on Scripture, not the Bible because 'Bible' is a Catholic word." I don't know which is more fragile, UPR's grip on reality or its underestimation of the will of people worldwide to face urban terrorism (via Free Radio Weekly Sept 14 via DXLD) ** VATICAN. Residents near the transmitter in Santa Maria di Galeria have said they suspect some local leukemia cases may be linked to the emissions from Vatican Radio, which broadcasts the pope's words around the world in 40 languages. The report from the five-month study, conducted by investigators from Italy, Britain and Germany and released by Health Minister Girolamo Sirchia, found that leukemia rates in and around Santa Maria di Galeria were no higher than rates in Rome. "On the basis of scientific knowledge, the report has found no evidence of a correlation between exposure to electromagnetic fields and the development of leukemia," Sirchia said. However, the investigators recommended a national study group be created to compile statistics of small Italian towns to monitor cancer rates. Sirchia said that "the number of cases analyzed was relatively low to consider this study completely convincing." Health concerns among residents of Santa Maria di Galeria prompted Italy's former environment minister to threaten to pull the plug on Radio Vatican earlier this year if it didn't bring its emissions in line with strict Italian regulations. Separately, an Italian prosecutor charged the director of Vatican Radio and two other Vatican officials, including an Italian cardinal, with damaging the environment. The Vatican has argued that the transmissions were in line with less strict international standards and that its officials are shielded from prosecution under a 1929 pact with Italy that established Vatican City as an independent city-state.
