The Dec 29 edition of NPR`s Living on Earth contains a brief segment, transcript of which starts like this: Sun Song CURWOOD: The northern lights, or aurora borealis, make some of nature`s most sublime performances. They`re pulsating sheets of white and colored lights streaming down from the heavens above the North Pole. Auroras appear when surges of charged particles from the sun hit the earth`s magnetic fields. The particles emit light, and, it turns out, they emit sound as well. But unlike the lights, you need special equipment to hear the sound of the aurora. Steve McGreevy has some of that special equipment. He calls himself a natural radio recordist, and he travels around in a van capturing the sounds of natural phenomena. Steve McGreevy invited producer Barrett Golding to turn these sounds of the aurora borealis into radio. The result is called Sun Song. (Crackling and whistles accompanied by guitar) ... Full transcript is at http://www.loe.org/thisweek/thisweek.htm#feature2 and audio will be available starting January 2. If you should find the show on your NPR station, the segment starts roughly 10 minutes into the show at a quarter past the hour. As a matter of fact, we could do without the guitar... Actually, this is a repeat of a 3:30 segment on the August 4 show, which is already available at http://www.haa.harvard.edu:82/ath/video/08049of9.ram (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** INTERNET VACUUM. Re: NYE webcast monitoring site http://www.ibcworks.net -- two problems this year.. 1. links that are dead, and two: embedded players. Working out the first part, the 2nd is a problem (Lou Josephs, Dec 30, swprograms via DXLD) ** KOREA NORTH. Being as far north as I am, the Chinese and Korean stations really predominate. In Victoria, PNGs and Indos, even Indian stations are easier to hear. Dawn enhancement was quite dramatic: 30 Dec 1700 + [excerpt:] 3959.74 Pyongyang with mostly instrumental music fair to good, but fading by sign-off with national anthem at 1759. 3985 Echo of Hope very strong (Walt Salmaniw, Queen Charlotte Is, BC, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** LIBERIA. Following my previous posting, I can confirm that the station heard on 5000 kHz at 1855 on Dec 28 is indeed Liberia Communications Network. After careful analysis of the recording I heard the DJ end the musical program at 1900 by saying: "...stay tuned to the ..().. service of Liberia Communications Network. Don`t go away". As I am all but an expert of the current Liberian political situation, I spent some time searching on the web and found out that Liberia Communications Network is supposed to be very close to Liberian president Charles Taylor. LCN for example, denounced in August an attempt by the US to kill president Taylor. The US later denied the news. Charles Taylor is considered by a United Nations panel "actively involved in fuelling the violence in Sierra Leone". These, and other pieces of interesting news on the station, can be found on the web site http://allafrica.com/ By the way, no trace of the station yesterday and today. Happy 2001 to all the list. (Davide Maspero, Italy, Dec 30, hard-core-dx via DXLD) ** NIGERIA. Yet another African station has been missing, 4770 (Chris Hambly, Victoria, Dec 29, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** NORTH AMERICAN PIRATE: 6940 USB. KIPM Starting at tune-in 30 Dec at 0251, this eclectic station was pretty much continuously heard with a very strong signal. This fella is either multi kw, or is located in the north west. Signed off at 0300, but found him again at 0310 on 6950 USB. Again at 0458 on 6942 USB with sign-off at 0507. At 0514 found him on 6955 USB with an Antarctic story. Suddenly off at 0549, but back on at 0554 with "the Adversary". Still going strong at 0756, but finally signed off just before 0800 with good to very good reception. Must never sleep! (Walt Salmaniw, Queen Charlotte Is, BC, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** RUSSIA. VOR, 13666 Dec 24 at 0209 w/nx. Excellent signal but definitely on that freq and not 13665. Listed as via Petro-K. "New and Views" at 0211 (Liz Cameron, MI, MARE via DXLD) VoR 13666 0254 12/24 that freq NOT a typo. EE pgm "Moscow Yesterday and Today" about choral music (Larry Russell, MI, MARE via DXLD) Obviously the Russkies are trying to freak out superstitious Amerikanskies (gh) ** RUSSIA. 7175 Khabarovsk. Test tones 30 Dec at 0805. Very strong "Govorit Vladivostok" at 0815 followed by interval signal, and subsequent program, Radiostantsiya Tikhiy Okean. Listened to the entire program, as I recall English listed on Saturdays in the past, but no joy. Mostly a new year`s type program with family messages to sailors, interviews with children, and even religious segments. Not sure how regular they are, as previous checks didn`t reveal anything (Volodya Salmaniw, Queen Charlotte Is, BC, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** TIBET [non]. Today, Saturday 30 December 2000, I have heard Voice of Tibet on a new frequency. At 1207 utc tune in the Russian transmitter had the usual tones then at 1211 the interval signal. This was on 15705 kHz, which was a good strong signal here in Newcastle, northern United Kingdom. Best reception however was obtained by tuning my portable Sangean to 15706 because of interference from adjacent channel Radio Bulgaria on 15700. I started to look for any possible parallel frequency, starting at 15695 and tuning down and heard the familiar interval signal on the new frequency of 15595. Reception was only fair to good here. The opening announcements at 1215 were in parallel on both frequencies but I do not know whether this new signal is from the same Russian transmitter having only tuned in at 1212 and missed the tones that would confirm this (Harry Brooks, UK, December 30, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U K. We have compiled BBCWS previews for all of January, to be included little by little in DXLD as each start date approaches. The entire opus has been posted at http://www.topica.com/lists/swprograms/read/message.html?mid=1600749249&sort=d&start=5250 Lots of entries start Jan 1-5, so will be in next DXLD. For now, only this one is imminent, as it appears in the Jan, not Dec BBC On Air: WORLDPLAY Specially commissioned radio plays from stations around the world, featuring younger writers relatively new to radio Eu Sun 0001, 1701 Am Sun 0000, Mon 0630 Timbuktoo, by Matt Parker, 1 x 60 min Dec 31-Jan 1 BBC production. Mansa Musa is making his way across the desert to Timbuktu to bring some books to the university which he founded. But when he arrives he finds it only half built (Jan BBC On Air via Chris Hambly, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. 740 WNOP Newport KY; 1400-1700E, 23-Dec; "Real Jazz 7-40 WNOP", ID`d as Newport @ToH but Cincinnati other times. Repeated anmt that they're ending 40 yrs of jazz on 12/31. Only hint as to their persona after that was repeated anmt, "Sacred Heart Radio is stealing the jazz". "The Day the Music Died" T-shirts available for 18$. This is all very reminiscent of the anmts that 1560 WQEW ran when the changed from Big Bands to Disney. At 1600E their sig dropped off noticeably even though that was my closest point to them, so assume a power/pattern change, or maybe I was just out of their lobe. Don`t you just hate it when you're out of their lobe? (Harold Frodge-- Travelling thru Indiana, MARE Tipsheet via DXLD) ** U S A.
