FIRST ILHA COMPRIDA DX-CAMP From next 8th to 10th December, the DX Clube do Brasil and the Comité Brasileiro de Radioescutas promote the 1. Ilha Comprida DX-Camp, supported by Pousada del Sol (Hotel), and Prefeitura Municipal de Ilha Comprida. The hotel (Pousada del Sol) is 50 meters from the beach (Atlantic Ocean), and will be closed for the DX-Camp on that week-end. Ilha Comprida is a little city 240 km from São Paulo, and it is a long island (74 km x 3 km). 74 km with just one beach!!!!! Good for beverages!!!!!! It is our first DX-Camp experience in Ilha Comprida. During 2000, for 4 or 5 times, we verified that this is an excellent place for DX... good signals, no electric noise. We wiil try to catch (DX) new world radiostations in mediumwave, longwave (not so explored in Brazil), FM and TV. Many Dx-ers will be in Ilha Comprida with their loop antennas, active antennas, it is programmed to test new beverage antennas. Also antennas for FM- and TV-DX. We expect to hear again many FM stations from the Caribbean. A good thing: In Ilha Comprida there are no local MW and FM stations (the nearest transmits with 250 W from Registro, maybe 75 km distant). We hope to have a good time, with good radiofriends from many distant Brazilian cities. After the DX-Camp we will relate the results. The story of a QRMing: 9310, Falun Dafa, 2207 YL in CC with many refs to Dafa (pronounced Da4Fa4) [the tone-by-number system which everyone should use in transliterating Chinese -gh] and Beijing (Peking) with background music. Station seems to be QRMed after 2208 at first with carrier then for at 1 min later carrier was with content from CPBS 1 then an FMish QRM started over it. At 2211 everything was 'spoiled'. Signal of Falun Dafa: S4 to 5 with CPBS jammers from S9 to 20. At 2215 Falun QSYed to 9315, still having heavy QRM from 9310. Jammer 1 with AM started QRMing from 2217 and about 1 min later the second AM QRMer started (so with echo of less than 0.2 sec). Falun Dafa returned back to 9310 on 2229 and in about 1 minute the S9 AM jammer started with the second to follow in about 1 min and in another min the FMish 2245 Falun Dafa is now on 9305. In a sesquiminute the first AM QRMer gone to this QRG with other jammers to follow. In total seems China jams this station with 3 stations! I wonder why China is using too many jammers for jamming this station (Zacharias Liangas, Greece, Nov 24, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CHINA [and non]. Hi all, Yesterday night (Nov 24th) I listened on 9310 kHz at 22.00 and found nothing. I went around and at 22.02 I found a Chinese speaking station many times talking about Falun Dafa on 9330 kHz. Reception was good until about 22.11, when another station outnoised everything else. So I have reason to believe that I heard the Falun Dafa station on 9330 kHz. Is there anybody out there who has got an address to write to, please!? 73 from (Björn Fransson, the island of Gotland, Sweden, hard-core-dx via DXLD) ** COLOMBIA. 9635, La Voz Nacional de Colombia; 0352-0402+, 18-Nov; M/SS px "Contrastes de Música Colombiana". "Ésta es La Voz Nacional de Colombia...canciones Colombiana...música de la patria... Radiodifusora Nacional de Colombia". RDf ID repeated. SIO=533 but muted and almost broken (Harold Frodge, Ontario, MARE via DXLD) ** ECUADOR. Chris Hambly mentioned this to me before, but I had missed the first few minutes of last week`s DXPL. This week, Allen Graham again said that for the next four months he will be away from HCJB on the road in the USA doing representation for HCJB. [I think they call it home-ministry, meaning traveling around raising funds to support his next stint in Ecuador]. BUT he will continue doing DXPL on his Gateway Solo laptop 9150, sending sound files to Quito where Jeff Ingram assembles the program. Not the usual nice Crown mike and acoustic studio, and his voice seemed a bit clipped, but no problem with intelligibility. This week, he said, he was recording in a closet while visiting his parents in Sonora, California. It will also run short, and this one wrapped up at 0149, then music fill. And yes, Ham Radio Today still follows at 0200 UT Sunday (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** EQUATORIAL GUINEA. Radio Nacional, Bata, heard for 15 minutes on 5005 with political talks in Spanish by a male announcer. Several mentions of: "República de Guinea, derechos humanos, política de nuestro país, clandestinidad, acciones politicas, Radio Nacional, servicios de los departamentos, Bata...". No music, no songs, just talks by a male announcer at 2115 Nov 25. SINPO 35553 (Rudolf W. All in SS. SIO=3+43 (Harold Frodge, Ont., MARE via DXLD) ** GERMANY. Hi Glenn, regarding the BBCM stuff about Deutsche Welle: The cited "expert opinion" was subject of some controversial comments, stating that it expresses endeavours to make DW a mouthpiece of the Federal Government. Especially the demand for "parliamentary legitimation" forced heavy criticism. It was stated that any kind of state control over the contents of DW programming could severely damage the station`s reputation. I want to add that I consider the complaints about "a selective perception of the situation here" as cynical, because hostility to foreigners is in fact part of the "reality in Germany" rather than limited to "spectacular events". And, by the way, it is of course pure nonsense that "no one can receive it". 6075 is a widely known shortwave channel and DW radio is also available on the popular Astra DTH satellite system. DW TV is excluded from the ´´official´´ Deutsche Telekom cable systems but available on some which are operated by private companies; needless to mention the possibility of direct satellite reception (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Nov 25, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GREECE [non]. The current IBB schedule shows that ERA is carried on all 9690, 15170 and 17705 from Delano; only 17565 originates from the Greenville A site: 9690 1200 1500 ERT ERA5 VAR DL 03 075 15170 0600 0800 ERT ERA5 VAR DL 02 296 17565 1800 2200 ERT ERA5 VAR GA 08 164 17705 1800 2200 ERT ERA5 VAR DL 01 075 (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Nov 25, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** INTERNATIONAL WATERS. Regarding "Delta Radio, a recently-formed commercial radio group": It is interesting to note that "recently" can refer to a period of a couple of years. I remember that I already back in 1995 called Deutschlandradio after reading that the Dutch government demands a withdrawal of the Zehlendorf transmitter from the 177 frequency. As well-known Zehlendorf and the Saarlouis- Felsberg transmitter of Europe 1 are operating with an offset of 3 kHz each, Zehlendorf on 177 and Felsberg on 183. Both transmitters are scheduled for 180 but such a co-channel operation would result in a horrible mess in large parts of Germany, and this problem was solved by the offset arrangement. Five years ago I was told, "we will stay on 177 until we got a letter with a seal, showing an eagle". Meanwhile the Dutch authorities no longer favour the 171 kHz project and hence are no longer interested in forcing Zehlendorf off 177. Instead Delta-Radio failed in establishing a transmitter site ashore, resulting in the expensive project of a platform in the North Sea (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Nov 25, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** IRAN. I have been tuning in to VOIRI's Radio Shalom service lately. It clearly is an anti-Israel broadcast, with newsreports about 'the Zionist regime' etc. But I wonder, what's the point? VOIRI has English broadcasts aplenty. So it seems to be targeted specifically for an Israeli audience, especially under this name... They won't get dedicated listeners I guess. Greetings (Silvain Domen, Belgium, Nov 24, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** IRAN. Club station EP4PTT was heard active this past week on 28331 and 28341 kHz around 1400 to 1430z. Also, Ali, EP2MKO, continues to be very active on 30/12/10 meters between 1300 and 1500z, but has been heard on 30 meters as late as 2330z. QSL via UA6HCW. Sapporo: (All transmissions seem to be in AM mode, not USB). 3970 Weak but readable at *1300 sign-on with Time-Pip & news // to other (MW/SW) NHK-1 outlets. Nov 19 6005 Strong and stable signal heard at tune-in 2015 Nov 19 & 2135 Nov 20. Also heard at *0400 with news, poor to fair strength. Nothing on the frequency prior to this as Nagoya goes off at 0330* AND Fukuoka was not heard at my location (see below). 9535 At 0215 on 11/19 with fair signal which was weaker than file://9550usb Tokyo. Again, all 3 Sapporo broadcasts were in AM. Tokyo: 3607.5usb Live sumo coverage at 0810 on Nov 19 with fair to good signal. 6175usb Heard at 2130 on 11/20 with morning exercise program. Good signal. 9550usb Was here with good signal from 0215+ tune-in on Nov 19. Nagoya: 3970 Nothing heard on this frequency. Checked it @ 0815, 1255 2045 Nov 19. 6005usb Tuned-in at 0250+ on Nov 19 and heard a local information program which fits WRTH (1999 edition - - I didn't purchase the 2000 edition) with community bulletin board-type info including Nagoya-area phone numbers, followed by a weather forecast for Aichi Prefecture (where Nagoya is located). This program was not // to 9550usb, Tokyo. Gone at 0330+ recheck. 9535 Nothing heard outside the scheduled times for Sapporo and Fukuoka. Osaka: 3373.5usb NHK-2 (Educational) programming with shamisen (traditional stringed instrument) and singing after 0815 on Nov 19 with good signal. 5428usb 0215+ on 11/19 with English lesson. 2045+ checks on Nov 19 & 20 indicate it is here but suffering adjacent Utility interference. 9181usb 0333 Nov 19 with English lesson. Off in mid-sentence at 0429* Please note that NHK-2 also has other language lessons in Chinese. Be careful not to assume this is a Chinese station! Fukuoka: 3259usb Quite clear signal heard at 1215+ Nov 18. 6005 Scheduled at 20-04 UTC but nothing heard between Nagoya 0330* (presumed) sign-off and *0400 Sapporo sign-on. However, Fukuoka is listed as using only 0.3 kw and is further away from Osaka (my location) than Nagoya is. Therefore, I can't be 100% sure in claiming it is off the air. 9535usb *0430 sign-on on Nov 19 in middle of musical interlude \\ 9550usb Tokyo with fair signal. (Ralph Famularo, Japan, Cumbre DX Nov 23 via DXLD) ** KAZAKHSTAN. Kazakh Radio left 11950 already a while ago. The last shortwave channel they used was 12115 but it is now silent, too; Kazakh Radio is at present off shortwave completely (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Nov 25, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** LIBYA. 5A1A was heard a few times this past week on 12 meters. Check around on 24915 or 24950 kHz. The station was also heard on 10 meters CW and 15 meters SSB (DX net 21355). All operations took place between 1500 and 1800z. He is expected to be here until August 2001. QSL direct only via JM1TUK. (KB8NW/OPDX November 24/BARF-80 via John Norfolk, OKCOK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** MOLDOVA. And regarding the report about the Mayak transmitter site near Grigoriopol` in Pridnestrovye: Voice of Russia again uses these facilities already since about three years; there was a further expansion especially of the mediumwave operations in the last year. The report does not mention the topic of foreign clients at all. One should keep in mind that the 999 mediumwave frequency from Grigoriopol` is actually the main channel of Radio Moldova Chisinau). However, when Pridnestrovye got under control of the separatist authorities at Tiraspol` they cancelled the Radio Moldova transmissions and replaced them by their own Radio Pridnestrovye programming, which was widely considered a clandestine operation. Meanwhile Radio Pridnestrovye uses the lower powered 1467 channel instead, while 999 now carries various foreign stations like Deutsche Welle or Trans World Radio. In other words, the operation of the Grigoriopol` transmitters by the Tiraspol` administration is no longer considered as illegal frequency piracy; instead we have almost a de-facto acknowledgement of Pridnestrovye as an independent state. As well-known, the airtime business at Grigoriopol` now includes alongside with the 999 and 1548 mediumwave channels also the shortwave capacity, which is sold by Merlin. Regards, (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Nov 25, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** NEW ZEALAND. ZLXA Engineer Steve Jepson says they are running full power 1 kW. From: BBC Online Saturday, 25 November, 2000, 02:51 GMT World Service journalists to strike The BBC has asked staff to ignore the picket lines Journalists at the BBC's World Service are going on strike in a long-running dispute about night shift pay and conditions. More than 200 journalists at the international radio station's headquarters at Bush House, in London, were balloted about the strike action, which will start at 1600 GMT. The stoppage was originally planned for 48 hours. Any stoppage will do immense damage to the World Service output --BBC spokesman But after informal talks between union leaders and BBC management on Friday, a deal was reached to ensure coverage of the declaration of recounted votes in the US presidential election on Sunday evening. John Fray, Deputy General Secretary of the NUJ, said: "The NUJ has advised the BBC that it has decided to end the strike earlier than planned - at 2130 GMT on Sunday, rather than 1600 GMT on Monday." BBC managers welcomed the reduction but expressed disappointment that the action was still going ahead. 'Immense damage' The journalists want an increase in night pay from £47 to £100 and want those aged over 50 to be exempt from working nights. A BBC spokesman said: "Any stoppage will do immense damage to the World Service output and our relationship with our audience and the re-broadcasters who depend on our coverage." The NUJ says it is taking the strike action because the BBC has failed to address its members` concerns. But the corporation says the claims are unrealistic and cannot be met. The BBC says the strike will be the longest in the corporation for many years. It is hoping to run a skeleton service with five-minute news bulletins every hour (via Maryanne Kehoe, swprograms via DXLD) This resulted in programme substitutions during the first half of many hours, such as Discovery at 1805 Saturday; and instead of Newshour at 2100-2200, ``Global`` simulcast from BBC Radio 5 Live. Evidently the ``industrial axion`` affects only the WS. I wish it would go on longer, to save us from the overdose of news the BBCWS plagues us with. But thank god it will be over by Sunday 2100; else we would not be able to find out who will be the next US president. Meanwhile, the online schedule actually seems to have been modified to show the substitutions, when you hit NEXT at http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice tho whether or not this Eu/NAf stream stuff also appear at unexpected times on the Am stream is as usual unclear (gh, DXLD) ** U K. He was talking about the cost effectiveness of his station. You can have the best prices in the world, but what good is it if you can't hear the station?? His competitors were booming in here on the east coast at +40. But he`s in the mud with tons of RTTY QRM to boot. And on both frequencies! And the kick that he`s on about how WGTG influenced the Presidential elections. What BS! Again, the *PAY-triot* programs he carries endorsed THEIR candidate: Charles Collins, NOT Geroge [sic] W.! Then he talked about how portable shortwave radios are not allowed on military ships because of their Part 15 emissions. So they listen to the ship`s communications receiver. But I just can`t imagine a bunch of sailors on a nuclear sub all huddled in front of the radio ops rig, listening to WGTG, while other vital radio op frequencies go un- monitored! Finally, the owner has stated the station is under new ownership and management. If this is true, why is Franz still doing the sales pitches? The reason why you don't have listeners? Because you and Genesis LIE to them! You feed them fabricated crap! So what happened to this great *October Surprise* all you PAY-triots on GCN were predicting? NOTHING! [response to above] radio station WWFV beams signals to the southwest (250 degrees and 310 degrees) and north west it is pleasing to note that our antennas work well as the front to back ratio as per fcc requirements have been proved by a professional engineer as a result, our signals to the east / north east are weak (as they should be) if one would like to check our web page http://www.wwfv.org click on under "facility status" you will note many new antennas are under construction one antenna specifically for the north east (070 degrees) coupled to WWFV global- 3 transmitter this will give this facility a much louder signal to the northeast with bone crushing deep discounts for airtime $25.00 per hour ! This BBS is at http://www.nationlink.com/liberty/wwwboard.html It's not quite up to the spontaneous fur-flying and feces-flinging proceedings we all fondly remember from the "original" 14.313 of a couple Years ago, but it's still a welcome break from all the dry, boring, traffic and weather nets on ham radio of late. If your [sic] looking for an eclectic mix of right-wing politics and "old tyme revival-tent" type religious fervor, with good dose of boozing belching, farting and (yes..) even pot-smoking tossed in for good measure...then by all means point your radio dial to 3.860 Think of it as ham radio`s answer to Comedy Central's "Man Show". [LATER: ran RCI IS & ID at 1230-1233:30 so evidently was Sackville -gh] ** ZANZIBAR. 11734 thread from hard-core-dx Nov 24-25 compiled by gh: Today from 2015 to 2055 I was hearing a Mideast possibly station playing mostly music and an occasional male announcer. The signal faded so badly at the top of the hour I could not get an ID. Does anyone know what is broadcasting on this freq at that time? Thanks, (Patrick Buckingham, Davis, CA, Nov 24) Hi Patrick! You were the fortunate recipient of the Voice of Tanzania, from their Zanzibar transmitter. I last heard them about 3 weeks ago although I must admit to not having checked since then. It comes in occasionally at fair to moderate strength here in the Midwest. Enjoy! (3/Liz Cameron, MI) I was thinking that might be the station but it sounded more Middle Eastern than African and China is on Mali 1 kHz up which did come in at 2100. Plus being on the West Coast, Tanzania seemed a little far fetched in daylight. Altho I believe I was able to hear Radio Fana in Ethiopia this morning. The terminator line was aligned nicely with Ethiopia, and if everyone didn`t already use it, there is a great tool, it can be downloaded from http://pw1.netcom.com/~burtonpt/azmap.htm (Patrick Buckingham) Unless the ECNA was completely blocked by the solar flare activity on 11/24, the station mentioned here was NOT Zanzibar. There wasn`t a peep out of the station yesterday during its normal broadcasting times until s/off at 2000, and the report was for almost an hour AFTER normal s/off. I would suggest another station on 11735, because upon many checks yesterday, Zanzibar wasn't heard (Dan Henderson, MD) Maybe so, but... 1) Zanzibar has been known to run until 2100* 2) Reception was from west coast, where abnormal propagation conditions could be entirely different 3) how many stations are there on 11734, as opposed to 11735? Furthermore, right now Sat Nov 25 at 1840 I am getting a weak and fluttery signal on 11734, nothing on 11735. If this be something other than Zanzibar, would someone hearing it better please advise! At 1926 the 11735 carrier came on, and gradually overtook 11734, tho I could never hear any audio on it; then at 2000 RCI Sackville 250 kW 60 degrees to Europe came on 11730, so if Zanz was on past 2000 I could not tell. Zanzibar is really not that unusual a catch, and I am sure there will be other opportunities to hear it, and better. 73, (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK) Zanzibar loud and clear at 1850 on 11734.1. Vy 73, (Enzio Gehrig Dénia/Spain) (38.50N 00.04E) And also here in Australia a few hours back (say, 2000 UTC). (Craig Seager) I'm hearing Zanzibar at 1900 UT, nothing else there. Best in USB mode. There's nothing on 11735, but strong splatter on the lower side from Radio Pilipinas on 11730. (Andy Sennitt, Netherlands) Glenn: Zanzibar very strong here at 1946 on 11734.1, strong het, zero beat to 11734.98. I'll check at 2000 normal s/off. [Later:] Stations on 11730, 11734.1 (Zanzibar), and 11735 at 2010 make this area a mess! Zanzibar IS staying on later today than on Thursday. Was not on on Friday. The powerhouse on 11730 s/on at 2000, squeezing this whole area. Just a thought--Ramadan starts in two days--might Zanzibar be getting ready for late nite broadcasts? (Dan Henderson, MD) They signed off at 2100 Saturday, November 25, 2000 (Patrick Buckingham, Davis CA, DX LISTENING DIGEST) UNIDENTIFIED. 6310 Argentina (tentative): 2330 Heard station ID "R Universidad" at 2330. At 2332, heard a mailing address: "code postal, 6645 Bara?? Argentina"; a couple of minutes later, "Universidad Nacional". Fair signal. Completely different ID, then what I heard last week. I found a number of R Universidades listed for Argentina, on various MW frequencies. 6310 doesn't work for a MW harmonic. Possibly an Argentine BC feeder. Amplitude modulation. Have not checked to see if this is a TX spur from R Nacional, Argentina on 49mb. Good level if it is a spur (David Hodgson, TN, Nov 19, Cumbre DX via DXLD) UNIDENTIFIED. Glenn, on Saturday afternoon I noticed the "Sweeper"-- or whatever that annoying "swoop--swoop--swoop" noise is called that we've all heard on 60 meters... well, I'm hearing it on the 13 MHz band, between 13700 and 13800. Noted as early as 1700 and still audible past 2200 today. It doesn't seem as strong (or annoying) as it does around 4800 kHz -- but then, the signals it`s competing with on 22 meters are rather stronger too. Anybody else hearing this? It`s contained within that precise 100 kHz chunk of the band, 13700 to 13800 (Randy Stewart/Battlefield (Springfield) MO, Nov 25, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Windshield Wiper QRM: 4410-4440, 1128, 19-Nov 4745-4800, 0224, 19-Nov 4555-4600, 0225, 19-Nov 4745-4800, 1140, 19-Nov (Harold Frodge, Ont.) Larry Russell had previously also noted it at 13705-13770 and called it "pulsed noise "zoop...zoop...zoop"." I like the `national windshield wiper synchronization signal` idea, but I bet that is NOT the explanation. Anyone have any details/ideas on this? Still a mystery?
