RCI is indeed running all three hours of This Morning now, on 17710, 13655 and 9640 Oct 31 from before 1400 past 1500, i.e. 1300-1600. This covers Sunday-Friday, but what will fit in here on Saturday? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CANADA. Glenn: I can confirm that RCI does indeed stay on the air for the full three hour block (1300-1600 UT) every day now. In addition to "This Morning" during the week, this block also carries "Out Front" at 1545 M-Th and "C`est La Vie" at 1530 Fri. The Saturday programs as listed are "The House" and "Basic Black". During the run- up to the Canadian elections, one might be able to hear the 5 minute party political broadcasts that have shown up in the past at 1555 UT on Saturdays and on other days of the week if requested by the parties (John Figliozzi, Oct 31, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CANADA. Listened to the first two editions of "Canada Today", RCI`s new "live" magazine--the first being at 0200 to USA/Caribbean; the second being at 0500 to Africa/Mideast. Both editions were hosted by Wojtek Gwiazda, the former host of "First Edition", which has been cancelled with the advent of the new schedule. There is indeed live content and updated newscasts and reports evident in comparing the first and second editions. An odd note: the same musical piece was used as a bridge between report segments in both editions. At 0200, the entire song was played; at 0500, only the first verse or so of the song was played. The primary subject in both editions was the Canadian elections. A more or less general report/interview by Jim Craig dominated the 0200 report. This report was used again at 0500 but was greatly pared down, while a new interview on the effects of TV advertising on Canadian elections was used in the 0500 segment. There seems to be a few kinks that need to be ironed out. The program itself does not seem to have jelled yet into a format and Gwiazda had a little trouble trying to speak extemporaneously near the close of the 0200 program. The 0500 program seemed a little more tightly organized. This is definitely a work in progress and a listener should expect the program to evolve both in the short and long terms (John A. Figliozzi, NY, swprograms Oct 30 via DXLD) ** CHECHNYA [non]. R. Up to now we just have not had the funds to proceed and ship the equipment to Liberia. All permissions have been granted by the Govt of Liberia, and are [sic] anxious for us to go in and set up a complete communications facility. Voice of Sudan RIP By Martin Schoech, CRW European Bureau Nick Grace C., CRW Washington Burea [Oct 31] The Voice of Sudan, which broadcast on behalf of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) against Sudan from its base in Asmara, Eritrea, has been closed down. The closure comes on the heels of Eritrean President Issayas Afewerki recent trip to Khartoum in seek of economic trade, and just one month short of planned legislative and presidential elections in Sudan. The elections are being boycotted by nearly the entire democratic opposition. The Sudanese Minister of Culture and Information, Dr. Ghazi Salah al-Din, told the Sudanese News Agency earlier today that the Voice of Sudan is now officially off the air in a "positive development" that is the result "of the recent contacts between the two countries..." Without mentioning the closure of the NDA's radio station, Eritrean ambassador to Sudan Eissa Ahmed Eissa told Agence France Press on yesterday (Oct 30) that "No deal was concluded with the Sudanese government during the last visit by... Afewerki to Khartoum for getting rid of the NDA in exchange for certain economic priviliges." Sudanese Minister of External Relations, Dr. Mustafa Osman Ismail, reported to the Sudan News Agency on Monday, however, that he is "following up the meetings currently being held in Asmara between the Eritrean government and elements of the opposition. "(T)he outcome of these meetings would be more obvious during the coming days," he said, "and in the light of which the next step would be defined." The outcome is clearly the silencing of The Voice of Sudan. Since April 2000, the NDA has been increasingly isolated by other opposition groups and was expelled from the Umma Party coalition for its resistence to negotiate with the regime in Khartoum. Reports also indicate that the United States government, which has provided the group with at least US$20 million in non-military aid, has recently become reluctant to provide the group with additional funding. The Voice of Sudan, which hit the airwaves in 1995 and was relatively easy to listen to around the world on short wave, maintained warm relations with its overseas listeners and had a good "QSL" verification policy. Recent efforts since August to reach sources within the NDA, who for years had been friendly to CRW, have been unsuccessful. (Simon Davies in Asmara, Eritrea, contributed to this report.) At 1212-1300 UTC usually Voice of Tibet clandestine station is broadcasting via 15645 on Dushanbe Tadjikistan tx site, and also on 2nd channel in parallel, though the audio fed via satellite differs a little bit, of 500 milliseconds up to a full second at times, depending on the satellite circuits from Oslo, Norway via Moscow to the CIS states. 2nd parallel channel of 15685 via Almaty [ex Alma Ata] Kazakhstan relay transmitter site in B-00. Last year WWCR signal was always stronger, and KAZ signal underneath. But the KAZ station signal isn't EVEN x.00 anymore. Almaty suffers few hundreds Hertz difference, also in A-00 season, when KAZ used to be on 15705.5? kHz. So, we have a 500 Hertz whistle tone difference now at the time span given above.
