There is no trace of any SW out of Algiers currently. 7245 is off. 11715 was last heard during the Olympics around 0630 in French (domestic pgm?). Now, nothing. 11750 which formerly carried French is also not heard and there is no FS on 15160 (Noël Green, UK, Oct 12, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** AUSTRALIA. Christian Voice test from Darwin? Logged by John Wright in Sydney, Australia today - test tones on 21680 from 2352 Oct 11 onwards. Possibly Darwin as this was one of the suggested frequencies... (Richard Jary, hard-core-dx via DXLD) ** BRAZIL. Radio Cultura, SP, [9615.0?] heard at 0654 on Oct.9 with MoR music at 0654 then full ID, address, frequencies and National Anthem at 0656. Good signal with splash from AWR Forlì 9610 and Ukraine 9620. Not audible at 0640 at re-check so appears to be signing on. Music programme after 0700 (Noël Green, UK, Oct 12, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CANADA. Hello, This is a very special week for us at Quirks and Quarks as we celebrate our Silver Anniversary. Yes, we have been on the air for twenty five years, the longest running national science radio program in North America. To honour the occasion we are looking forward in time to imagine where science will be 25 years from now. What will be the latest achievements and developments in the fields of physics, medicine, biotechnology, space, and robotics in 2025? Plus we'll dig into our archives and look back at significant moments of the past quarter century, as Quirks & Quarks explored them. Join me for this anniversary special, recorded before a live audience at Glenn Gould studio, and get a glimpse of the future. That's Saturday, right after the noon news, on Radio One. (Bob -- Quirks & Quarks -- CBC Radio quirks@toronto.cbc.ca http://www.radio.cbc.ca/programs/quirks via DXLD) That would be Saturday 14th at 1605 UT in AT/NT zone and hourly thereafter across Canada via webcasts; on RCI Sat 2105 and Sunday 1205 (gh) ** CHAD [et al.] Re Radio Rwanda 6055: This station is actually no rarity here in Europe but once in a while audible, as is the case with N'Djamena 6165. Regarding this station, the WRTH claims that RNT still moves up to 7120 during daytime but I tend to assume that RNT is now straight on 6165, as a move from 49 to 41 metres and back seems not to make much sense. As is well-known, RNT discontinued the usage of 4904.5 a couple of years ago in favour of 6165; WRTH claims both frequencies are in use but the 60 metre channel was no longer reported, so evidently only the 100 kW transmitter from 1983 is in use. It is my impression that the possibilities to catch overseas stations on 49 metres here in Europe are usually assessed too pessimistic. Perhaps this is the result of a common belief of 49 metres to be the "Europaband", a term which here and there still appears in German- language publications although it is certainly obsolete, considering that the usage of various regular channels was meanwhile reduced; in some cases like Switzerland 6165 and France 6175 the cut-down was really heavy. The next one in this row will be 6155, as it will most likely have no longer Austria during daytime from Oct 29; ORF/ROI not yet published its B00 schedule but it seems that the shortwave coverage of Europe will be limited to the evening hours only. Regards, (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Oct 12, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CHINA [non]. Ref. the debate in DXLD 0-117 and 0-119 about the definition of clandestine radio: To correct the record, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is not described as a clandestine broadcast station in ClandestineRadio.com. RFE/RL's Radio Free Iraq and Farsi language service are, however, included within our intelligence (Intel) database because of the domestic U.S. political circumstances that preceded the creation of these surrogate radio outlets. In addition, coverage of these two services helps to paint a more complete picture of the "white" clandestine programming being pumped into the Middle East. RFE/RL, on the other hand, is occasionally covered within Clandestine Radio Watch at the request of our readers. We also continue to publish data on Falun Dafa Radio and other stations, for example Capital Radio in Zimbabwe, because many of our readers also have an interest in issues of media conflict (Nick Grace, ClandestineRadio.com, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CROATIA. R. Croatia, no longer on SW, but several previous English and Spanish newscasts are available ondemand from: http://www.hic.hr/radio/Radio_Croatia/index-eng.htm (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CROATIA. HRT Deanovec is heard using 6165 7365 and 9830 on air at 0600. At 0900, 7365 goes off and is replaced with 13830. A check at 1900 revealed 6165 & 13830 still on air (Noël Green, UK, Oct 12, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CZECH REPUBLIC [and non]. Hello, find enclosed current B00 schedule data for Radio Prague from Andreas Volk. Contrary to previously published information only a single transmitter at Rimavská Sobota will be used. Also this document reflects the usage of three instead of just two transmitters at Litomysl, as 200 kW are operated there with a pair of 100 kW units; the site is equipped with five 100 kW Tesla's. --------------------------------------------------------------------- RADIO PRAGUE - WINTER PERIOD 2000/2001 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Program UTC kHz m kW Area --------------------------------------------------------------------- ENGLISH 0800 - 0827 11600 25 100 N.W. Radio Iran of Tomorrow, formerly known as Radio Tomorrow's Iran (Persian: Radio-ye Iran-e Farda) was first observed by BBC Monitoring on 7th December 1998 with what was announced as a test transmission. Although it has not yet been heard to announce its affiliation, the radio describes itself as "the voice of all of Iran's national and free thinking forces" and says that it supports "the struggle of clerics and religious forces who wish to see the separation of religion and government". Its web site gives a US-based fax number. It is believed to broadcast via hired transmission facilities in Tajikistan or Moldova. Next day, only Voz Cristiana-CHL heard here, and the Amman engineer had got his digits in the correct order. ie 11960 (Noël Green, UK, Oct 12, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** LUXEMBURG [non]. The "Luxembourg effect", i.e. ionospheric crossmodulation, is a well-known problem here in Europe and was subject of thorough surveys already decades ago. I found a reference to a publication from Haberland/Vogel at the FRG PTT in "Rundfunktechnische Mitteilungen", volume 10 (1966), number 4, pages 206...212 (article "Messung der ionosphärischen Kreuzmodulation bei den Langwellen-Rundfunksendern Europa I und Luxemburg"); I guess this survey is clearly better founded than what one could read so far about the "crossfield antenna", this technical marvel (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Oct 12, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** MARSHALL ISLANDS. 1098 kHz, V7AD, Majuro, very good with some 1090-Seattle splash, man in Marshallese with news, Mentions of islands, people's names, etc. At 0704 UTC 10/10. Best heard in a long time. They sounded stronger. Maybe they finaly got their TX fixed. In my QSL letter from years ago the manager was looking for transmitter tubes (Pat Martin, Seaside OR, IRCA etc., etc., Drake R8, K9AY Antenna, DXLD) ** NETHERLANDS ANTILLES. On 11, 12 and 13 October the BBC World Service English transmission to the Caribbean at 1200-1400 UTC on 6195kHz will be broadcast from Bonaire on a non-directional antenna. This is due to antenna maintenance at the BBC´s Antigua relay station (Andy Sennitt, RN, Oct 11, hard-core-dx via DXLD) See JAPAN ** NIGERIA. Voice of Nigeria 7255 currently well audible in English with World News until c0647 followed by News of Nigeria. Ibadan 6049.9 is also beginning to show (depending upon propagation condx on the day) and heard with ID at 0628 and drum IS (Noël Green, UK, Oct 12, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** SERBIA. It is almost incredible to comprehend how easily the old regime's media empire was crushed, having in mind the fierce defence used by Miloshevich in earlier cases - in March 1991, he even brought the tanks on the streets when angry protesters attacked state television. OK, this time the protesters were equipped with everything from Molotov cocktails to heavy construction machinery, but almost no one predicted that state TV will fall without a horrific bloodbath. The state Radio was practically left defenseless - it is reported that the former editor-in-chief of Radio Belgrade's first programme (who was dismissed in early nineties) simply walked in the radio HQ at about 8PM, met no resistance at all and went on to try assembling an ad-hoc team to start normal broadcasts. By the way, the director of the state TV and the editor-in-chief at the news department barely escaped the lynching party waiting for them outside the TV HQ (Igor, YT1MM, Oct 10, hard-core-dx via DXLD) ** SWITZERLAND. The B00 sched of SRI shows 6165 as via Vatican at 326deg to Europe at 1830-2030. Other relays via Jülich, Fr. Guiana and Singapore as usual (Noël Green, UK, Oct 12, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** SWITZERLAND. New book traces evolution of Swiss broadcasting The first two volumes of a comprehensive history of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation have just been published, tracing its origins in the 1920s up to the introduction of television in 1958. "Radio and Television in Switzerland" describes how radio began, with small stations run by local committees cooperating to exploit the then new technology. They were dependent on transmitters used for commercial aviation, so had to be based near airports. Financing was a constant problem in those early days of sound broadcasting, and towards the end of the 1920s a national political debate was started on setting up a nationwide radio organisation. A system based on that in the United States - financed by advertising - was considered, but after advice from a BBC executive, the Swiss decided to follow the British example, and opted for public service broadcasting. Markus Drack, a retired senior member of the SBC staff, was commissioned to coordinate the written history, the first part of which runs to over 600 pages of text and photographs. As a trained historian, he knew from the start that it would be a mammoth task, so he recruited a team of young historians from all of Switzerland's universities. They will also work on the next stage of the project - the SBC since 1958. "The Swiss situation is more complicated than in other countries because we have four national languages, and over 12 studio archives," said Drack. Similar complications faced the SBC's founders. But when it went on the air in 1931, Drack says the media scene suddenly became less parochial. "Previously reliant on local newspapers, people in one cultural region learned about people and events in others, and also even in their own region." by Richard Dawson 09.10.2000 15:17 RealAudio 5.0 Richard Dawson traces the history of SBC back to some of its first broadcasts (http://www.swissinfo.org Oct 11 via Mike Cooper, WORLD OF RADIO 1054, DXLD) ** TAJIKISTAN. Dushanbé 7245 is clear channel from 1530 when RAI goes off. Heard with English at 1645 followed by Arabic at 1700. Uses string instrument as IS. Splash from Vatican 7250 and Albania 7239.9 spoils audibility, tho signal good, at 1645 (Noël Green, UK, Oct 12, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. Further to our recent news release about the new music program "Seldom Heard Radio," hosted by Frederick Moe, the debut edition of the program has been rescheduled on WRMI due to problems associated with the tropical storm and flooding in Miami last week. The first edition of "Seldom Heard Radio" will be aired at 0415 UTC Friday, Oct. 13 (that's late Thursday night in most of North America), and it will be repeated at 0500 UTC Saturday, Oct. 14 -- both of these broadcasts on 7385 kHz. The second edition of the program will air at 0500 UTC Saturday, Oct. 21 on the same frequency. The regular schedule for "Seldom Heard Radio" will be the first and third Fridays of each month at 10:00 pm Pacific time (that's 0500 UTC Saturday until the time change at the end of October, when the UTC time will change to 0600) on 7385 kHz (Jeff White, WRMI, DXLD) ** U S A. Further observations of WRMI`s new 15725: Wednesday Oct 11 already on at 1307 with presumed CMN; Thursday Oct 12 not on at 1426 check; open carrier off and on at 1458 check; 1553 playing classical (!) music, 1558 heterodyne with Pakistan starts, 1559 ``North American Service of WRMI``, 1600 join in progress wacky Christian Media Network (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. hi glen! we have had a great thing happen here at WGTG a religious group is now subsidizing our Christian programming! we now charge $ 25.00 per hour for RELIGIOUS programming ! with 5 100 kw transmitters in the making this price slashing will be good news to Christian broadcasters world wide! wow!!! airtime for $ 25.00 per hour!.... they are talking even less per hour! this is the inital pricing structure they wanted to give the time away but i told them NO ! as we have found out in the past that FREE time is not appreciated!! good news for shortwave!! regards!! (dave frantz, wgtg, [sic] Oct 11, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. WBCQ2 will be moving from 9330 to 9335-CUSB, to get further away from WGTG 9320 (Allan Weiner, Oct 11 to gh) From Oct 29? (DXLD) ** U S A. News About Mike Malloy--He's apparently attempting to launch a new syndicated talk show this month! (Official?) MM Website http://www.mikemalloy.net/important_announcement.htm Main page: http://www.mikemalloy.net/ {Found via Google search] (I recall hearing that Mike left WLS, but never why) Chet IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT Well, that was certainly a lot of fun - filling in for Hightower. Just a whole lot of thanks to all of you who went through cyber-hell to tune in! It's not going to be that hard in the future, trust me. Now, it's onward to the next stage of the Master Plan (insert spooky music here). On October 23rd my program is going into national syndication. The company handling everything is, as you know by now, i.e.America. As soon as I can, I will post the stations that will carry the program from the first day. We will be adding stations as we go. For the Chicago (WLS) gang, there is a station in the area that might be one of the initial "sign-ons." It is WAUR-AM. I don't have their phone number in front of me, but maybe a call to them between now and the 23rd requesting the program would produce some results. Ya' never know. Again, thank you!! to the greatest crowd of supporters a talk show dude has ever had!!!!!!!!! I am honored (and humbled) by your interest and your help. And, to all you conservatives out there . . . hang on. Help is on the way. Redemption is at hand. Salvation awaits. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk. Peace. (Mike Malloy, from his website above via DXLD) ** VENEZUELA. 4830.1, Radio Táchira 0331 Oct 8, Back after a few months absence. ID and LA pop music. Excellent signal as usual (Mark Mohrmann, upstate NY, WORLD OF RADIO 1054, DX LISTENING DIGEST) UNIDENTIFIED. My previous report of what I thought was Voice of the People - Radio Mogadishu, Somalia, 6315 may be incorrect. This one was heard on the 10th positively in // with 5500, so may instead be Voice of the Tigray People via Mekele, Tigray Province. Both sigs good this day at 1730+ but no ID copied. The 6315 station is proving a very difficult one to ID due to the rapid-fire language and words indistinct. But their music is really nice! I commented that it seemed a strange coincidence(?) that 6315 appeared as 6750 and 6805 went off. So far as I'm aware, Tigray was not reported on either. But signal strength and programming on 6315 is very similar (Noël Green, UK, Oct 12, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Haven`t been listening for a couple of months (read: 6 months or so) but is just about getting back into some DX'ing... so sorry if I have missed something, but what's the station on 6315 kHz hrd from tune in 0320 UTC and beyond 0400. Wasn`t able to copy an ID. (Stig Hartvig Nielsen, Denmark, hard-core-dx via DXLD) This is Voice of Peace and Democracy of Eritrea, on there and parallel 5500 kHz at 0315-0400 & 1415-1500 daily, broadcasting via Voice of the Tigray Revolution facilities at Mekele in Ethiopia. Voice of the Tigray Revolution follows on the same two frequencies at 0400-0500 and 1500-1900 daily. (Dave Kernick : Click your way to the Interval Signals Archive at http://www.intervalsignals.com - identify that mystery station! hard-core-dx via DXLD) UNIDENTIFIED. 4410.3, Unidentified 0340-0430 Oct 7, Continuous Spanish religious ballads, no announcer.
