Congress approves plans for Europe-wide Romany radio, TV Excerpts from report by the Czech newspaper `Lidove noviny' on 1st August Romanies are looking for ways towards the official recognition of their nation. Their own Europe-wide radio and television should assist them in this search. According to estimates, the Romany language could be heard in the ether within a few years. Both media should be based in Prague. This was one of the agreements reached by the fifth world congress of the International Romany Union (IRU), which was held in the Czech capital last week. "Indeed, we are contemplating setting up uniform radio and television broadcasting within the framework of Europe. Of course, broadcasts would not be round-the-clock initially but for only a limited time," Jarmila Balazova from the Dzeno association, spokeswoman for the IRU congress, confirmed to `Lidove noviny'. According to Balazova, the publishing of a Europe-wide periodical written exclusively in the Romany language is under preparation as well. "Romanies could exchange information on what is happening in their countries, on cultural and political events. In view of our long-term efforts to attain the recognition of the Romany nation, Europe-wide media are indispensable for us," Balazova explained... The [International] Romany Union intends to ask the Radio Free Europe radio station for the provision of space for broadcasting. It is precisely within the framework of Radio Free Europe that an all- European Romany editorial office could be established in Prague. Talks with representatives of the Washington-based Voice of America radio station are already under way. The Radio Free Europe management does not know anything about this yet. "No one has approached us so far. There exist no specific plans to set up a Romany editorial office within the framework of Radio Free Europe," said Sona Winterova, spokeswoman for Radio Free Europe, in response to the Romany Union's plan. It is primarily the lack of funds that complicates the establishment of Romany radio and television. Another problem is that, thus far, there exists no uniform shape of the Romany language... This item is from 'The National' newspaper on Tuesday 1 August: A NEW radio station to cater for Motu and English speakers was launched yesterday by Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta. FM Central 89.9 will broadcast 24 hours a day in Motu and English with focus on local news and events in Central province and NCD. The station, owned by nationally owned Hirad Limited (short for Hiri Radio), aims to promote regional broadcasting and can reach a potential audience of 500,000 people. It will operate out of Pacific Place in downtown Port Moresby. Hirad Limited is a company registered in PNG for the purpose of developing regional broadcasting within the country. In his speech broadcast live, Sir Mekere said the radio station wanted to provide a quality service that included a wide variety of music, educational and cultural programming, and comprehensive news coverage. "I'm sure FM Central will be a success. To all residents of Port Moresby and Central province who can receive the station, happy and enjoyable listening," Sir Mekere said.. Chairman Gerea Aopi said the radio station was aiming at the Motu speaking market for now. Mr Aopi said that Hirad Ltd had been granted a commercial radio license by PNG Telecommunication Authority (PANGTEL) for the operation of FM Central 89.9 and other stations in the Central province and National Capital District. He said the station cost about K1 million to set up. (via Matt Francis, EDXP via DXLD) Thus, the new FM station in Moresby is distinct from the NBC-operated (sometimes) Radio Central on 3290, although there are plans for the privatisation of the NBC in future.
