GLENN HAUSER'S SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-21, May 6, 1999 {Items from this and all our reports may be reproduced and re- reproduced only providing full credit be maintained at all stages} THIS WEEK ON WORLD OF RADIO 988. See topic summary at http://www.angelfire.com/ok/worldofradio/Wor988.html ANTARCTICA. 15475.80 LRA36 Radio Nacional Arcangel San Gabriel. The transmission expected for May 1/2 UTC was not on the air by technical problems at the last minute. Because the strong Antarctic winds, one wire of the antenna was cut. The transmission will be make on the next weekend at the following time: Sat 8 May *2330-0100* (-0100* Sun 9 May) fq.: 15475.8 khz (Gabriel Ivan Barrera May 2 via Will Schrey..., WORLD OF RADIO 988) CANADA. RCI has added 15470 kHz on their 2000-2130 UT broadcast; usually the best reception here in mid-USA compared with the other frequencies aired at that time. At other times, 15325 is still better. They don't seem to have deleted any of the other frequencies listed in the printed sked or in the on-line info published in RIBOLD. So they must have added a transmitter? (Will Martin, MO, April 28, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING) CHINA. CRI on new 5990 at new time for English of 2300, May 2, followed by Spanish at 0000; good signal, Mali? (Joe Hanlon, PA, WORLD OF RADIO 988) Also good here, and could be even closer relay; abruptly went off at 0032*, then back on with open carrier only *0035-0057* (gh, OK) CHINA. CRI on new 9570 May 1 0200-0300* in Chinese //9690. At 0300 9570 off and 9690 [Spain -- were the two synchronized??] continuing in English. 9570 very strong. A recent freq change. China was not on 9570 April 25 when only Romania [q.v.] was there but not it's impossible to hear Romania on this frequency (Brian Alexander, PA, WORLD OF RADIO 988) When I checked 9570 May 5 at 0156 sked announcement they were still giving the European rundown ending with 2100-2130 UT! At 0200 in Chinese was running a good 2 seconds behind Spain 9690 (Hauser) CHINA. CRI's new 9570 is not so good here: carrier on before 1200 May 6, joined program opening late 1201, audio came and went, mostly went, and when on was undermodulated in Chinese; Korea audible underneath at 1230. Could well be from China itself, not a relay. Not much better in English during the 1300 hour (Glenn Hauser, OK) IRAQ. R. Iraq Int'l, 11787, April 24 2107-2130* - Tune-in to English programming with ID, lite music. News at 2109. Abruptly off at 2130. Good level but usual poor audio (Brian Alexander, PA, WORLD OF RADIO 988) ROMANIA. Looks like 11810 is now the best freq for Romania at 2300. 11810 was good here last night, Apr 29. The other freq at that time, 9570, had Portugal booming in. Once Portugal signed off at 2350, Romania could be heard there on 9570, but only for five minutes, after which at 2355, Romania signed off with their IS. 73, (Ivan Grishin, Ont., April 30, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING) ROMANIA. R. Romania Int'l, 9510, May 1 0200-0255* English news, commentary, lite instrumental music. Strong/good. //11725 was fair and //9570 weak under a strong CRI in Chinese [q.v.]. At 0400, RRI in English on 9570 only, no //s heard (Brian Alexander, PA, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING) TURKEY. R. Yugoslavia, May 1 0000-0030 on 9580 in USB! Tune-in to light classical music; into occasional IS between 0004 and 0016: short 5-second IS played once every couple of minutes. Just dead air between the IS segments. Nothing heard after 0016. Never heard any voice announcements. Good signal. Tuned out at 0030. Nothing heard during various checks between 0100 and 0400 (Brian Alexander, PA, WORLD OF RADIO 988) YUGOSLAVIA. RY in English at 1900 on 7230 was back on Sunday May 2, and again Monday May 3 (Chris Hambly, Australia, WORLD OF RADIO 988) So of course I checked at 0000 and 0430 UT Mon and UT Tue on both 9580 and possible change to 11870, but nothing yet. From previous behavior they could have changed to some other frequency without notice, so tune around both bands (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 988) ###
