GLENN HAUSER'S SW/DX REPORT 99-10, Feb 24, 1999 {Items from this and all our reports may be reproduced and re- reproduced only providing full credit be maintained at all stages} THIS WEEK ON WORLD OF RADIO 978: See topic summary at http://www.angelfire.com/ok/worldofradio/Wor978.html ANTARCTICA. Suspected R. Nacional Arcangel San Gabriel playing Argentine folklore vocal music, tuned 15476 kHz from 2255 UT on 2/18 with fair signal, built to STRONG S9+ by 2330. Several breaks in music but no announcements. Still good but fading when went off the air without ID at 0059. Heterodyne on high side from a Spanish-speaking numbers station on 15478. First time heard here, with major geomagnetic storm in progress! (That, along with near gray-line path, must have really enhanced the N-S propagation). 73 de (John Cobb, Roswell, GA, Feb 19, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING and WORLD OF RADIO 978) Got positive ID on 2/20, female announcing "prueba...con diez kilowatts potencia..." This must be their new xmtr testing. Reception continued good thru the weekend; recorded Argentine music and occasional IDs. S/off time varies day to day, noted off about 2350 UT one day, 0101 UT another. Signal is great for 10 KW, much better than RAE on 15345, with some flutter/QSB. Now is the time to log them! (John Cobb, GA, Feb 22, ibid.) ERITREA [non] Voice of Peace and Democracy of Eritrea schedule as announced and monitored: 1430-1500 M/W/F in Tigrigna; Tu/Th/Sa in Kunamigna, via Mekele, Ethiopia, 6315 and 5500 ((c) BBC Monitoring Feb 17 via WORLD OF RADIO 978) IRAN [non]. WWCR's mysterious Persian program appeared at a new time Feb 23, Tue 1400 on 15685 instead of VOA Comms World. While I still don't understand Persian, this appears to be another test program, consisting mostly of music alternating with long identical (?) announcements giving schedule, ID and contact info. This time the only ID I could make out was "R. International," the other word Porseh (Question) not heard; mentioned both Dushanbe and Teheran, probably in giving local times; Tajik is closely related to Persian. While it has been a one-hour program, this ended at 1430 for English "Bible Pathway". And R. International was back the next day, Wed Feb 24 at 1400-1428, so maybe now stripped then weekdays? 1400 on 15685 ought to be the optimum time and frequency for actually reaching Iran from WWCR, better than 1100 on 12160 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 978) MEXICO. XEYU definitely logged here on 9600.15 or so, Feb 24 at 0559 with S3 signal but very low modulation requiring AF gain wide open: (chime), "Esta es Radio Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, transmitiendo desde Mexico, Distrito Federal, capital de la republica (chime), 860 kHz amplitud modulada estereofonica, XEUN; 96.1 MHz frecuencia modulada...[adjacent QRM now bothering from station opening on 9605]...y 9600 onda corta, banda internacional de 31 metros... Retransmitimos el siguiente Panorama Informativo..." and news. BTW, upon 1230 recheck the rapid noise pulses reported months ago were still dominating 9600, no XEYU audible, and also heard on various open frequencies between 9540 and 9700 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 978 which includes a recording) ###
