Homepage starters, and information on viruses.

THIS NO LONGER APPLIES, THIS PAGE WAS MADE IN 1998!

I just wanted to send a little message out to anyone who is thinking about starting a Homepage for the first time. This is only for people who use AOL. I do not know about others.

Before you begin downloading and uploading images, please make sure you have your graphics box unchecked on your internet properties. I do know that a lot of people can not see your graphics if they are compressed, mostly only people on AOL can see them. Is this the effect that you want to display? I myself would like everyone to see my pages.

I am only telling you this because of all the heartache I have gone through fixing my pages because of this. It would be enough to discourage anyone. I don't want anyone else to go through this, so I am telling you. Do not compress your graphics if you are on AOL.

Thanks to some friends helping me on the internet, I have fixed my pages one at a time.

Step by step instructions.

1. Go to My AOL, hit preferences.

2. Go to www, on your aol internet properties click Web graphics.

3. Uncheck the compression box. AOL automatically compresses graphics to make websites download faster. Click apply and you are set and ready to download any image your heart desires.

4. Anything you have on your page prior to this will not show to netscape users, you will have to download those graphics again.

Little things people e-mail me about

How the heck do I e-mail someone a site? Well there are several ways but a really easy way for people on AOL is to just click on the little heart on the top right corner of the site 2 times. A little box comes up and asks you what you want to do with it. If you want to send it to someone click insert in mail and it will automatically bring up write mail with that site in it. Put the address of the person you are sending it to in the send to box, click send and hey it's on it's way. Pretty neat huh? Another way is to copy and paste right into your e-mail or of course the standard put it into your favorite file and bring up write mail and then hit your little heart on your write mail and click on the site you want to insert.

VIRUSES

Have you ever got those annoying e-mails telling you about a virus going around that would crash your machine or delete your files. Well here is a place you can go to feel a little comfortable knowing some of these are just a Hoax. Everyone should be aware however there are real viruses and you should be careful, but some are just to spook you and that just isn't nice to do. So, I hope you feel better reading this.

Hoax viruses If people know more about these viruses they won't get passed on and keep the thing going! So let's put a stop to this crazy madness!

Sophos Virus info Lot's of them here folks including the, ooooh my gosh, Win a Holiday virus!

SARC-Virus Hoaxes All the famous ones people. Boy oh boy, some people just don't have anything better to do with their life!

Go here for some Hoax tips it pretty much explains it all in a nutshell.

Real viruses or threats

Here are some real threats you should know about. If you are careful you can avoid these.

Back Orifice: It is not a virus but it can help other people take over system. It is usually inserted into a system as a trojan. It can sweep a list of lP addresses, read, copy, delete, rename and find files and directories. It can tamper with windows Registry, view cached passwords. Many other things as well. Best thing to do to protect yourself from this is to be careful while using the internet. Be careful downloading programs from sites you are not familiar with.

I recieved this from my friend Karen.

About two weeks ago I received an email from a friend I know very well. With it came an attachment called HAPPY99.exe I opened it and got what is called a worm.Happy99.Worm Some info on it. It took me two days and buying another anti virus program to detect and get rid of it. Causes no great harm to computers, but annoying. last night I received an email from someone who had signed my guestbook and the attachment came again which I immediately deleted.
