Gargoyles (produced by Disney, now on Toon Disney, on the goddamned 11 & 11:30 pm time slot) is one of the finest animated series I've ever seen. Unlike other cutesy Disney cartoon, this is aimed at a more mature public, with numerous references to Shakespeare and many legends. Lasting three seasons, its the best US, in my opinion, can offer.
One thousand years ago, supersticion and the sword ruled...
Six medeival gargoyles that, born to defend and protect gargoyles and humans alike, are betrayed by the humans they trusted, and thanks to a spell, end up in a stone sleep. The only it is to be broken, is if the castle where they sleep is risen above the clouds...
Years pass...
One thousand years later, they are awaken by millionare David Xanatos, who bought their castle and moved it to NY, right on top of his skycraper, thus breaking the spell. But Xanatos is not the benefactor he portrays to be, and soon becomes one of their enemies, leaving the gargoyles on the run again. But not all humans are evil. Enter Elisa Maza, the police woman who befriends the clan and helps the overcome the obstacles of the new world...
In the 20th century, they encounter new enemies, from deranged scientists, to the god-like childern of Avalon. The most amazing aspect is the way the characters grow and change with time, making you think they are almost real. Though the series was cancelled, the gargoyles live again through a series of fanfics called The Gargoyles Saga
