THE SJJ REVIEW

JEEVES AND WOOSTER.
The roaring twenties. Bertie is a bachelor of the upper classes. he lives in luxury through the allowance paid by his aunts. He lives and plays with the other fatheads who reside down the drones. Not a brain cell among them.
Then there is Jeeves. A man servant who seems to fall into Bertram Wooster's employ. An enigma with the perfect manners, the most potent brain and a gut full of guile.
But life is never easy for Mr Wooster.
He and his loyal valet live a life of almost perpetual upper class chaos as Bertie is caught doing favours for angry aunts and fretful friends. Capers which leave Bertie in the most dire situation.
But you can always rely on Jeeves to save the day.....

Ah, PG WODEHOUSE....
My favourite. In both books and film form. The books harness that rather beautiful language we own and the TV series adds pictures which could never had fit more perfectly. I am talking about the Granada series starring those Cambridge chums Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie as Jeeves and Wooster respectively.
The series remains true to the books. A task a brim with difficulty as the books are mostly in the first person narrative - namely Bertie. This makes the books and the series a perfect counterfoil for each other. In one we see Bertie as he sees the world, in the other we see how everyone else sees him.
Of course, let's not forget Stephen Fry who, despite his bulky frame manages to move with that ghost like movement that Bertie describes in the books.
What makes the TV series so peculiar for the avid viewer is the supporting cast. Almost every series the supporting characters change actors - some actors even swap roles. No role is safe... Gussie Fink Nottle, Aunt Agatha, Madeline Glossop all change roles. Can be annoying, can be refreshing.
And watch out for some familiar faces.... Martin Clunes (Men Behaving Badly), Chloe Annette (Red Dwarf), John Savident (Blake's 7, Coronation Street)...
The TV series ran for 4 series comprising of 6 episodes per series (except the first which had five.)
They are currently available in the UK on video with the forth series expected at Christmas..

FILM 99

SIXTH SENSE
I was in Florida when I saw this one - I knew nothing about it - Zippity zip. It was thus, an amazing experience. Unfortuately, you will have all seen the trailer, read a preview or spoken to Bruce Willis and therefore know the basic storyline.
In which case you'll find it a rather average flick.
Every review marks this "a tale with a twist", or "a shocker - you will not believe the end!" and the film loses any closet guile it thought it had.
For this I implore - STAY WAY FROM THE TRAILER.
THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH
Hmm, another good movie, flawed once again if you watch the trailer and thus watch half the film. Pierce is cool. Cleese is amusing and Coltrane top of the bill. Denise Richards looks nice although strikes me as being trained at the plank school for wooden acting.
THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR
Excellent take on the original film that I will never see this year.
THE MATRIX
Despite what the ghouls (fools) say, this is far better than STAR WARS pt 1.
Ted Theodore Logan does a passable Keanu Reeves and woos the audience with a mixture of special effects and rocketing storyline. He stands in front of the screen waving a reasonable script at you too, the cad.
Another film to go and see knowing zero about. A task you are unlikely to succeed in by now.
GO
If you are American and 17 you will think this film is "wicked" and "intense". If not, you'll think it's rather good.
THE MUMMY
Excellent supporting cast overshadowed by a dire lead and lead lady. Take them out of the studio now.
Story's a bit limp as well.
Who cares about mummys anyway?
AUSTIN POWERS 2: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME
(To the verse of "POWER OF LOVE" by Huey Lewis - then again perhaps it's better if it's not.)
First time you see you might think it's bad.
Next time you see it, it might make you glad.
But you'll see a sequel which is cool and sound.
That's half and an hour of goofs abound - (Dad).
