THE TALE BEHIND THE BAND THEY CALL

So how did it start?
1996
Harlow College, Essex, England.
To further his career in music, Mike Cutmore had decided to venture onto Harlow
College’s BTEC popular music programme. The course gave students the chance to
experiment in various styles of music. Mike, who had been the drummer for Essex
rock band PAROXSYM, began experimenting in soul, punk, blues and jazz.
Steven Jones appeared on the course a month or so after it started. He had come straight
from an art course and decided that music was his life. Although he was not educated
in music, unlike Mike, he had spent several years playing around London with
several bands. Mike took him under his wing from day one and the two went on to
achieve some very high grades in recording and performance - something the two had
found experience in outside the course.
Mike’s band PAROXYSM and Steve’s band, MFV, both split up within the first year
of the course. Steven drifted from band to band trying to find a suitable one until he
and Mike decided to work on a music venture themselves.
First they needed some more recruits....
Mike drummed and Steve sung. Although Steven played the guitar and bass, he was
unhappy doing either while vocaling as he felt it had a dramatic effect on his stage
presence. This meant they needed a bassist and guitarist. Problem was finding the
right bassist or guitarist. They soon realised this was more difficult than they had
originally imagined.
After several failures, they decided they should try a three piece. Steven would play
the bass or guitar as well as sing.
It was Steven’s idea to find a girl for the group. Steven had just been over to America
and found himself hooked on several early nineties rock bands. The Pixies and Sonic
Youth being two prominent ones. He especially liked the boy/girl vocal idea that the
Pixies established. The search went on for the girl member.
And she was right under their very noses.
Kim Doughty had been on the course from the very beginning, She had come from school after
receiving very high grades in music.
Kim had spent much of the music course writing and playing britpop with other like
minded students. She had rarely worked with Steve or Mike who had enjoyed
something more louder than her tastes. Kim had come onto the course and had made
the transition from clarinet to guitar. By the time Steve and Mike had asked her to
join, she starting to take a keen interest in learning the bass. Kim was also a trained
singer. Discovering that their musical tastes were a little closer than previously
realised, the boys had found their girl.
The three began rehearsing at the beginning of 1998. Steven was having to relearn the
guitar after spending a long period just vocalising or playing bass for other bands.
Kim was learning to combine her new found bass playing with her singing. Mike
began adhering his rock drumming to his jazz method he had developed at the
college.
When the course finished in June, the band began gigging under the name JINX. After
the first gig, Steven fell violently ill and spent several months recovering. In that time
the band decided the name JINX may have become too apt....
So after much brainstorming and arguing the band found an identity.....
And now they are here to stay.
