CHARLIE ROBERT McCORNACK - PEARL TERRY CRABTREE

Charlie Robert McCornack. b. 30 Aug 1889; d. 11 Oct 1972 at 83.

Charlie McCornack was the seventh child of Robert Pascal McCornack and the first child of Robert Pascal McCornack and Dorothy Caroline Walden.

Charlie was born in a sod house in Sheridan County near Hoxie, Kansas. Charlie married Pearl Crabtree on July 30, 1910. Pearl was one of eight girls, and was born in Orange Country, North Carolina on 3 Jun 1892. Her father was Charlie Crabtree, a blacksmith, and her mother was Virginia Stanley. Pearl and her three younger sisters were placed in a Quaker Orphanage Home in 1899 when her father died of typhoid fever at Highpoint. She was adopted by the George Montgomery family in 1905 and came to Oklahoma City with the family in 1909.

It was "love at first sight" as Charlie had been hired to help the family move their household goods from the train to their new home when the family arrived. Charlie and Pearl lived in Oklahoma City where their three sons were born. Charlie was a hardware merchant. He contacted the flu in 1918 which left him partially deaf. Since they didn't have hearing aids, he was unable to continue as a hardware merchant. So in March 1919, Charlie and his family moved to Washita County to work on the Driggers Ranch with his half brother Lee.

Charlie and his Cattle

In 1927, Charlie and Pearl purchased a homestead two and one half miles southwest of Cordell, Oklahoma where they lived the rest of their active lives. Here they established a registered herd of Jersey cattle which they milked until 1935 when they were slaughtered by the Federal Government during the dust bowl days. Charlie continued to farm until he was in his 80's. In his last year of farming he made 24 bales of cotton on 11 acres of land. Pearl was very active in raising a large garden. She also helped milk the cows and raised a large flock of chickens to help provide income for the family.

After Charlie and Pearl moved to Cordell, they were very instrumental in bringing the family together on a regular basis. Pearl spend many hours cooking large meals for family gatherings. Charlie enjoyed playing pinochle with family members. Nephew Wilbur Hatfield recalling the gatherings said:

"The girls slept upstairs in the house and the boys would sleep in the cottonseed down in the barn."

Charlie died on the 11 Oct l972 and was buried in the Lawnview Cemetery in Cordell. Pearl continued to live on the family farm by herself for an additional 10 years. She died in Corn, Oklahoma on the 26 May l983 at the age of 90. She was buried with Charlie in the Lawnview Cemetery
