For the second year in a row, members of Troop 1889 traveled to the mountains of New Mexico.
They backpacked the trail to Middle Fork Lake at the base of Mt Frazier. A beautiful clear water lake that is
very secluded at 10,868 Ft. They set up a base camp there. From there they hiked to the summits of
Mt Walter & Wheeler Peak. On the hike to the summits, the group enjoyed playing in show & making snowballs.
Then returning to base camp & resting before backpacking back down & returning to Red River N.M.
Activities at Middle Fork included trout fishing, expoloring the trails, & watching the wildlife.
Wildlife that was observed during the week long trip included deer, marmont, ground squirrels,
big horn sheep, & a bear. Tempretures at base camp were a cool 50 degees daytime, & 40 degrees at night.
A great break from Oklahoma's 3 digit tempertures of July. After 4 days camping in the mountains, the group stayed
one night at the "Golden Eagle Lodge" in Red River, NM with a great friend to scouts, Mark Drummond.
Another big activity for the week was a 6 mile white water raft trip down the Rio Grande Gorge
with "Big River Raft Trips". The boys also enjoyed a visit to "Philmont Scout Ranch" on the way back home.
