All 9100 series numbers are canac remote equipment and all 9400 are catron equipment. FRA is very limited to ruling on these things. 33 GE B30s, C30s were built that had no traction motors just a unit to plug into another and the FRA was ruling it as a locomotive with 92 day inspections. This would cause the yard for which it is assigned to have run on their spare if there is one. So CSX is fixing this by stripping boxcars and using the chassis to install cabinets with radios, and controls. Also the unit was originally designed to run in front, with the loco pushing it. It was later designed to follow, with a headlight circuit that had no MU headlight switch and the light would transfer from dim to bright in the direction of travel. These have a 2 outer yellow circling lights, and a set of horns near center. You can see the horns pretty good from this angle on car #9185. The flat cars were built because of the downtime of a power unit when it is in Q or has mech problems. This was designed to have less maintenance if the power unit broke down...just plug it into another and continue switching. From the initial reports the catron flatcar has been very beneficial, no maintenance. see other pictures below. 2-25-04

I don't like CSX's idea of these you put the operator in an uncontrollable environment, noise, blocked view (cabinet or locomotive and less height advantage than a locomotive), and weather. Just put the Remote Controller on the ground, or put the Engineer back in the locomotive and bring the Caboose back! This is Car #9176 2-25-04
