To Be God… Often I am asked why I chose to become a writer. It isn’t until very recently that I asked myself the same question. Why do I write? Is it the overpowering love for the theater and storytelling? Is it the joy of childish imagination? Or is it a blasphemous urge to play god? For me, I found, it is all of the above. I love using my mind and going back to my childish complexities of detail in my imagination. I also love to tell a good story, and let my story make somebody do something, even if it is just making them throw up, because there’s always that chance that a paragraph might make them cry, or laugh, or pissed off, anything so long as I have prompted it. But the biggest perk of all; to be God. To be a writer you see all of God’s creations, and you use all of man’s language to manipulate those very same creations that the lord has given to us. You can write a passage expressing your love of a tree, or hatred of a bug. You can even take God’s creations and tell stories about them, making them do what you see fit by means of words. You are, then, God. You create your own universe, with your own creatures, and your own outcomes. Your own plot, your own time, your own creation. Now, for those of you who know me, you know that I am a very devout atheist. I don’t believe in God or any other heavenly being for that matter. After all, God is the biggest story ever told, and therefore, the greatest. However, God, being fiction, and being a story of man was once written. Imagine, a writer, being written; that’s amazing. Now I know you are confused. I know, I did just say that I don’t believe in God, but I do like playing him and talking about all of his creations. I will admit, God did create everything, after all, that is how the story goes… isn’t it? But now we are deviating, once again, from the subject. The subject at hand, is why I am a writer. I write because it helps. I write because it’s fun. I write because I can, and can very well. Some are workers. Some are leaders, some followers, and some artists. I, my friend, am an artist. I am a manipulator. I control my own world. I am a writer. I am, in short, my own God. And boy is it a great view from heaven. Sleep tight my creations, for tomorrow is another story, let the end bare many sequels. |
