Sharks sign Mischler & Carkner

The Sharks signed free agents, forward Graig Mischler and defenseman Matt Carkner. Mischler, the native of Holbrook, New York, led Northeastern University in assists (32) and points (42). He also led Hockey East in assists (15). In 140 games with Northeastern, Mischler is tied for 33rd on the schools all-time scoring list with 108 points (34-74=108).

In 1999-00, Mischler led Northeastern in scoring with 23 points (9-14=23) in 33 games. He was also named Hockey East Player of the Week on Jan. 21, 2000. In 1997-98, Mischler was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week on Nov. 22, 1997 and appeared in all 39 games for the Huskies. Mischler, 22, was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft (8th round, 204th overall).

Carkner posted 16 points (8-8=16) for the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 53 games. He finished tied for second on the team in penalty minutes (128). He added three assists and 25 penalty minutes in seven playoff games. In 1999-00 as team captain in Peterborough, Carkner’s 177 penalty minutes led the team. In addition, he added 16 points (3-13=16) in 62 games.

In 1998-99, the six-foot-four, 230-pound Carkner collected 18 points (2-16=18) in 60 games with Peterborough en route to being named Most Improved Player in the OHL’s Eastern Conference. Carkner, 21, was originally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft (2nd round, 58th overall).
