KOTYK MAKES FORTY-THREE SAVES AGAINST PHANTOMS
CLEVELAND, OH-
The Cleveland Barons steeled themselves Saturday for what promised to be an extremely physical matchup with the Philadelphia Phantoms. The Phantoms were looking to secure their postseason chances, and they came into Gund Arena holding the last playoff spot by one point. Although Philadelphia was a dangerous opponent, the Barons had to like the way their power play performance (third overall in the league) stacked up against the Phantoms' propensity for penalties. However, it would be the Barons that found themselves watching from inside the penalty box as the Phantoms converted their power play opportunities.
Philadelphia's leading scorer, Mark Greig, got the contest underway at 4:38 into the first period. After shaking his defender, Greig calmly slid the puck past goalie Seamus Kotyk's stickhand for his thirtieth goal of the season. Just a few minutes later, Mike Lephart put the Phantoms up by two when he scooped up a rebound from Brad Tiley's shot in front of the net. Philadelphia then capitalized on a power play, with Ladislav Kohn getting the glory. Seconds later, Graig Mischler broke the Barons' goose egg and got Cleveland into the game with his tenth goal. Willie Levesque had the assist.
But the Phantoms kept menacing Kotyk and the Barons. The Cleveland netminder
stopped a shot by Mike Siklenka only to have the puck land on the line where
Peter Vandermeer poked it home. Tensions boiled over, and Eric LaPlante and
Kirby Law dropped their gloves to settle a dispute. The Phantoms got the last
laugh from that encounter when Siklenka picked up a goal of his own on the
ensuing power play. Patrick Sharp and Kohn
had the assists and Philadelphia went into the locker room with a commanding 5-1
lead.
The Barons cracked the Philadelphia defense once again at the 9:38 mark in the third period. Tavis Hansen tallied his twentieth goal of the season, and fourth against the Phantoms. Newly returned defenseman John Jakopin got his second assist in as many days. But penalties continued to hurt the Barons, and Patrick Sharp scored for the Phantoms to give them their third power play goal of the game. Pat Rissmiller pulled back a consolation goal to extend his scoring streak to four games. All-Rookie team member Brad Boyes had the assist.
The Barons get their next chance for victory when they travel to Chicago to take on the Wolves, Sunday, March 30. Their next home game is Tuesday, April 1 against the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks. Remember that that game is a "Two-for-Tuesday" game, and two club level tickets can be purchased for the price of one. No fooling!
