BOSTON, MA – Northeastern defeated Merrimack in a Hockey East battle Saturday night 5-2 in front of 3041 fans at Matthews Arena. Senior Graig Mischler (Holbrook, N.Y.) assisted on four of NU’s five goals, including earning his 100th career point with his third assist of the night.
The Huskies struck for power-play goals on their first four chances. Willie Levesque (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) had a pair of goals, Mike Jozefowicz (Toms River, N.J.) had a goal and two assists and Jim Fahey (Milton, Mass.) had a pair of assists. Mischler now leads Hockey East with 27 assists on the season and is tops on NU in points with 35 (8-27-35).
The teams combined for 88 shots, 48 for NU, 40 for Merrimack. The win comes a night after NU squandered a 2-0 lead against Merrimack and lost 4-2.
NU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Levesque scored a power-play goal on a wrist shot from the left wing at 7:35. Mischler and Jozefowicz assisted on the play. The lead increased to 2-0 when Scott Selig scored his first goal since Jan. 20 against New Hampshire at 15:26 of the first. It was NU’s only even-strength goal of the night.
But for the second night in a row against the Huskies, Merrimack came back to tie the game after falling behind 2-0 in the first period. Ron Mongeau scored at 19:38 of the first period and Joey Gray had the tying goal just 38 seconds into the second period.
However, unlike the night before, the Huskies would score next. Mike Ryan (Milton, Mass.) scored his 13th goal of the season at 10:01 of the second. Mischler picked up the assist to become the 39th player in Northeastern history to reach 100 career points.
The Huskies dominated the third period, adding two more goals and outshooting Merrimack 20-5 over the final 20 minutes. Among the 20 shots were power-play goals by Levesque, at 6:47, and Jozefowicz, at 11:42. Mischler assisted on Jozefowicz’s goal for his fourth point. It was the second time in less than a week that Mischler had four points in a game. Mischler had four points (1 G, 3 A) versus Harvard last Monday.
Lost in the shuffle of Mischler’s milestone and NU’s four power-play goals was the play of Jason Braun (Fruitport, Mich.). After making a stretched-out skate save at 2:31 of the second period, Husky goaltender Mike Gilhooly was forced to leave the game with a hamstring injury. Braun came on in relief, playing the game’s final 37 minutes, making 17 saves and not allowing a goal. Braun picked up the win in net for his first victory since a 4-1 win over Boston University Nov. 12 when he made 34 saves and was named Hockey East Goalie of the Week. Tom Welby was also impressive in net for Merrimack, finishing with 43 saves. Joe Exter had 43 saves the previous night for Merrimack.
The Huskies will next play on Friday at home against Boston University.
