[I]The Hospital Volunteer

My good friend, Shahla from Persia, told me this true story while she cut my hair:

Shahla was working when she received an urgent phone call that her 35-year-old husband had been rushed to a nearby hospital due to a severe heart attack. She dropped her barber's scissors and drove to this hospital as fast as possible.

Once inside the emergency room, a friendly nurse directed Shahla to her husband's room "335". Shahla frantically ran through several corridors, climbed three staircases, and took two elevators, but she could not locate her husband's room. She feared that by the time she got there, he would be dead.

Out of desperation, Shahla stopped in front of the hospital's "Volunteer Booth" to seek directions. The nun who sat behind the counter asked Shahla why she was so frantic. Explaining that she was hopelessly lost, and that her husband lay in critical condition in room 335, the nun calmly reassured Shahla that "she need not be anxious because her husband would fully recover from his heart attack".

After obtaining proper directions from this nun, Shahla quickly located her husband. The doctor met her in the hallway and said, "Your husband would have certainly died had he not worked so near to our hospital, but he is recovering well and should be fine."

For the next 48 hours Shahla remained at his bedside, and only left the hospital when the doctor said that he was no longer in critical condition. She immediately walked toward the "Volunteer Booth" to offer a warm "thank you" to the wonderful nun who had been so comforting at her hour of need.

The nun was not in the booth, so Shahla asked the volunteer worker how she could locate this "Good Samaritan". The worker immediately replied, "This is a Protestant hospital; we do not have nun volunteers, and rarely do nuns, in their habits, visit patients here. In fact, all of our Volunteer Booths do not staff people at the time of the evening when you arrived here!"

Once she got home, Shahla reflected about the reassuring nun. Surely this woman was an Angel!

[2]The Naval Base Guard

This is a true story that happened to me several years ago: One night while leaving my job at a mall, three men in a car threatened to rape and kill me. I ran to my car and drove off, only to have them follow me at close range. Frantically I tried to lose them, but nothing I did worked. I sped by a police station hoping to be noticed and drove through a McDonald's parking lot; yet they still managed to stay close behind. I glanced down and saw my gas gauge sitting on "E". I realized I would have to do something fast, but was running short on options.

I quickly prayed to God to help me, and suddenly realized that there was a Navy Base "gate", albeit closed, nearby. If I could only make it to the gate, there might someone there to help me! As I turned the corner with the three men still bearing down on me in their car, I saw a shadowy figure ahead. It was a very large man with a rifle, who stepped out ahead as if to say, "I'm here to protect you". The guys behind me must have seen him too because they slammed on their brakes and threw their car into reverse in a cloud of smoke. Shaking and crying, I pulled up to the gate to thank this man, who was at least seven feet tall in my estimation. He was dark skinned with bright blue eyes. As I thanked the man through sobs, he reassured me and told me how I could get home through back streets along the Navy base; he also said that I'd be "okay".

It was only later, once I had gotten home, that I realized that there was no way he could've known where I lived, for I had not told him. Today, I am convinced that "Angels" are among us.
