The Hambden Murphy Role
The following list of names is taken from the May 30, 1877 issue of The Geauga Republican.
In the post Civil War period Temperance became an important social movement in the United States. By 1877, the movement had reached Geauga County. In April and May of that year, numerous articles were published in The Geauga Republican concerning the movement. During those months inhabitants of at least three communities, Hambden, Thompson and Chardon, signed the "Murphy Pledge". Francis Murphy(1836 -1906) travelled around the United States holding temperance meetings. His supporters signed the following pledge and wore blue ribbons.
"With malice toward none, with charity for all; I, the undersigned, do pledge my word and honor (God helping me) to abstain from all intoxicating liquors as a beverage, and that I will by all honorable means encourage others to abstain."
THE HAMBDEN MURPHY ROLE
In the post Civil War period Temperance became an important social movement in the United States. By 1877, interest in Temperance had reached Geauga County. In April and May of that year, numerous articles were published in The Geauga Republican concerning the movement. During those months inhabitants of at least three communities, Hambden, Thompson and Chardon, signed the "Murphy Pledge" named for Francis Murphy (1836-1906). Murphy traveled around the United States holding temperance meetings where his supporters signed the following pledge and wore blue ribbons:
"With malice toward none, with charity for all; I, the undersigned, do pledge my word and honor (God helping me) to abstain from all intoxicating liquors as a beverage, and that I will by all honorable means encourage others to abstain."
335 individuals signed the Hambden Murphy Pledge. Presuming that the majority were residents of the township, this figure represents approximately one half of the population of Hambden Township enumerated at 599 individuals on the 1880 Federal Census (Sandy Malitz, Genealogy Specialist, Geauga County Public Library System. January 2003).
A cursory comparison of the names on the role against the 1880 Federal Census appears to show that the individuals represented there comprised a cross section of Hambden Township. There were roughly equal numbers of men (169) as women (166) who signed the pledge. Most individuals on the roll appear to be relatively young, ranging from their teens to early forties. Large numbers of school children, exemplified by 10 year old Miss Austie Carver, populate the list. The elderly, such as 79 year old John Roper, were represented as well. The list reflects the agrarian character of the community.
Most signers were farmers and farm laborers and their families. Farm laborers were usually sons still occupied on their parents' farms such as John Hale. Other occupations were somewhat rare. At least one individual, O. P. Quiggle, was a merchant and several were the wives of skilled artisans or craftsmen such as M. Harrison whose husband was a stone mason. Another, Alta B. Coons was a young aspiring teacher who would have her own classroom by 1880. The clergy and their families were represented. Hambden ministers R. A. Aylsworth and Rev. J. B. Hammond are to be found on the roll as well as individuals such as Emma Ransom, the daughter, niece, and great-granddaughter of ministers. Many of the surnames are easily recognizable to Hambden researchers. Families such as the Wintersteens, the Pattersons, the Quiggles, and the Stockings can be found on the 1820 Federal Census for the township. There is no hint of the massive influx of immigrants from such exotic places as Bohemia, Finland and Italy that had begun to or would soon be settling in the area. A handful of individuals, such as Eugene Baker, would soon abandon Hambden for a more promising future in Nebraska and other such places in the west.
