~~~ HAWKEYES PITCH SHUTOUT 15-0~~~
The Hawkeyes chalked up their first victory of the season with a 15-0 shutout of the Longhorns.
Matt Calladine once again led the way scoring 2 TDs and QB Tony Sclimenti added 3 extra points, 2 on a pass to Sleiman Masri, and 1 on his own with a QB sneak.
The Longhorns opened with the ball, but fumbled on the 50 yd line, and the Hawkeyes recovered... A beautiful 30 yd bomb from Calladine on the opening play fell just off the hands of Vinnie Fox. But, with newly installed quarterback Tony Sclimenti, the Hawkeyes moved the ball steadily down the field behind the running of fullback Matt Calladine, and also newly installed halfback Mark Shaw. They were able to move to the Longhorn 20 when the clock to the 1st quarter ran out, and on the 1st play of the 2nd quarter, they fumbled, and the Longhorns took over.
The Horns moved the ball well, all the way down to the Hawkeye 20, but the Hawkeyes defense stiffened and they held off the Horns. They took over, but were unable to move the ball as the half came to a 0-0 end.
The 3d quarter saw the Hawkeyes start with the ball and use the entire 8 mins driving from their own 35 all the way for their 1st score, a 30yd sweep around left end by Calladine, with Sclimenti driving over for the extra point to make it 7-0.
The final quarter was all Hawkeye defense, with a big help from Dustin Fox at defensived end taking over for Chase Franklin, who unfortunaltely was taken to Lakewood Hospital with a broken thumb suffered midway thru the 3d quarter. The hard nosed Hawkeyes continually turned away the Horns time and time again, capping it off with Calladine's 55 yd weaving and darting interception return for their final score. Sclimenti added the icing to the cake with a perfect pass to Masri for the 2pt conversion, and the Hawkeyes had their first win of the young season.
Things will get alot tougher next week when they face the defending champions, the undefeated and unscored on Buckeyes, in a rematch of last years championship game at 10 AM at Lakewood Stadium. The Buckeyes, who have not lost a game in their now 3yr history, crushed the Lions today 33-0.
