Before attempting any of the grinds make sure you have an adequate pair of aggressive skates, and no, taking the two middle wheels out of your old pair of inline skates doesn't cut it. To order a pair of aggressive skates online go to: www.skatepile.com or www.rollerwarehouse.com.
Grinds: (Approach all grinds with moderate speed. Jump onto each grind, lock-in, and jump off. Use a decently slick grinding surface that's lower to the ground if it is your first time attempting one of the grinds. Bike racks, painted curbs, low and waxed ledges, and benches are all suitable to start out on. If it is your first time attempting a grind start out with a helmet. Also, don't put your hands in front of you or behind when you fall because trying to catch yourself is an easy way to break your hand, wrist, fingers, etc. When u fall try to land on your side or if you fall forwards or backwards try to roll. I am not responsible for an injuries that may occur!)
Soul - First off, try a stall with the soul grind. Try to keep most the weight on the foot that is using the soul plate. The other foot, the one on the middle plate, is used in the front during the grind, and should be pressed down, but not hard. Get good at stalling before you actually try it! As you take off, your feet should already be in the soul grind position in the air, before you hit your surface. As you make contact with the surface, remember to keep the weight on your sole plate. Now lock on to the surface with your plates, and if you are moving fast enough, you should be grinding.
Pornstar - To do a Pornstar you should already be comfortable with the soul grind. Start at with moderate speed and approach the obstacle. Jump in the air and twist your legs in the position so that your front foot will land on the positive plate and your back foot will land on the middle plate, with your laces facing your front foot. This is kind of hard to explain, but pictures will help. As Long as you lock in and remember to try to stay on top, almost leaning over the rail, you will be able to hold the Pornstar for as long as you want.
Acid - The Acid is also one of the four basic grind but it is probably the most difficult out of all of them due to weird foot positions. Like the other grinds you want to jump into the air with moderate speed and correctly position your feet before you land. With the Acid, your back foot is on the positive plate, and your front foot is on the middle plate with the laces facing towards you. It is easier to put most of your body weight on your positive plate rather than the middle plate for this grind because it will help you hold the grind longer and balance as well. Also, if you find that your wheels keep catching and you fall forward, try getting lower to the grind surface, bend your knees more, and put your front foot at less of an angle. If you can get so low that your grinding in your boot, its major style points.
Frontside - To do a Frontside, you must already be familiar with the Frontside stall. Practice this by jumping onto a curb and locking on with your middle plates, then jumping off. Once you're comfortable with the stall, try grinding. While you are grinding make sure to evenly shift your weight on both skates; leaning to much forward or backwards will make you fall. Keep practicing this grind until you have mastered it, then move onto the Royale or Full Torque.
Royale - To do a Royale you must have already mastered the Frontside. The Royale, like the Frontside, involves grinding on your two middle plates. In a Royale, both your skates are tilted slightly backwards, wheels pointing away from you. The biggest mistake most people make while attempting this grind is trying to tilt your skates by leaning back. Those people fall. To accomplish a Royale you must bend your knees and tilt your legs back while maintaining a center body weight. If anything, put 70% of your body weight on your back skate and 30% on your front skate. This will help you tilt your skates even more, without making you fall.
Full Torque - To do a Full Torque, just do the opposite of a Royale. Tilt your skates so that the wheels are pointing at you and shift your weight 70% on the front skate and 30% on the back. Be really careful on this grind and make sure your surface is slick enough because if you get caught, you will most-likely land on your face. Keep your legs steady while grinding, once you get locked on because the less moving you do, the better chance you have to stay grinding. (Full Torques are also known as Farvenugans)
Unity - After either the Royale, or Full Torque, or both grinds are learned move onto the Unity. The Unity, also similar to the Royal and Full Torque uses the middle plates but is much more difficult. During the Unity, both your legs should be crossed and you should be grinding on the outside part of your middle plates. If you are grinding something that has a 90* angled edge, such as a ledge or curb, try to stay on the corner or side while grinding. But, if you are grind a rail try to stay over the top of it. These two pointers will allow you to maintain the most possible balance during this grind. Shift your weight equally and make sure to cross your legs in the air before you lock on.
