Cramlington, Northumberland, in the heart of God's Country!

I've been working on a history of Cramlington for quite some time now, although only a Cramlingtonian for a decade or so myself.  Hope you find these pages of interest!

Firstly, rather than deal with all the nitty-gritty of how Cramlington fits into the wider scope of things, I decided to analyse the 1881 Census of Cramlington inhabitants [one of my very latest projects that makes interesting reading] - here's the highlights gleaned from this work ...

For the purposes of this research, I used 'Cramlington' to incorporate the following areas:

Bassington, Cramlington, East Cramlington, High Pit, Old Cramlington, Shankhouse & West Cramlington.

At the time of the Census, there were 5,744 inhabitants.

Just over 70% were born and bred in Northumberland, with 16.1% being born in Cornwall and Devon.  The latter would have been the original 'strike-breakers' from the 1844 strike, with the major influx of Cornish/Devon folks coming to Cramlington during the strike of 1865.

The average [mean] age of an inhabitant was only 23.45 years old.

Of those in 'paid' employment, [2,297], two-thirds [65.43%] were working in the coal mining industry, with the next largest segment, 11.14% employed in domestic service positions, such as servant, housekeeper, nurse, cook, etc.

There were 1,131 dwellings at the time of the census, of which 14 were uninhabited.  Of the remaining 1,117, the following pie-chart shows the make-up of all households.

Incidentally, the average number of persons per household was 5.15 persons.
